Please make the video regarding sexual violence! I'm just finishing up the first season and I'm a little infuriated with the way they handled her rape -- how she thought it was consensual even though both parties were drugged.
Hi! I watched Veronica Mars at your recommendation and for the most part liked it, but I agree--the handling of sexual abuse was done poorly, especially at the end of season 2. I was very disappointed the writers decided to essentially say, "People who are sexually abused are violent psychopaths that deserve no sympathy". Or that's how it seemed to me; it feels like they wasted the opportunity to realistically explore the after-effects of abuse. Hope to see your follow-up video someday.
Now I feel foolish for not seeing more than a few clips at a time of this show and not taking the time to watch it. I did see one scene that would lead me to agree with you about Veronica and her dad. I remember watching the episode she did some sort of detective exam and she is gloating over how she got a higher score than her dad only for him to bring out his paper and basically say "oh I'm sorry, did I say I got this score? I meant to say I got this score". It was very funny.
I'd say it's less "comparable" to Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and more "a three-season love letter to it." Witty blonde takes centre stage in a wide riff on an otherwise male-dominated fiction genre, with a crew of a tech-savvy girl, a guy who doesn't do much, and a broody-vs-dangerous love triangle. Featuring ex- Buffy cast members, and a cameo from the GODDAMN WRITER.
I also loved the Veronica Mars show. Part of me likes to think that it isn't too late to have that follow up VM in the FBI show but the other part of me is dreading that they will screw it up. As it is, I think it's a grate show.
I have now watched this whole series per your recommendation. I enjoyed it very much, so for that I thank you. I'm sorry it had to end. I'm still interested to hear your thoughts on season three. What would have been the right way to discuss rape on this show?
Never seen Veronica Mars. Reminds me of Penny from Inspector Gadget. I wanted to be her when I was a kid. She saved her uncle all the time and she had a cool watch gadget.
I totally disagreed with you about Suckerpunch, but I definitely agree with you about Veronica mars--we need more self-sufficient, intelligent depictions of women!
I constantly laughed at the show for how it portrayed Mexican-Americans because if I didn't laugh at it, I would be offended. No matter how much they "explore" that characters feelings, considering the locale of the show, you'd think they would have thought of something better than a gang member. Like just another fellow student or something. Also, I didn't find they set a positive example for women with Veronica and any of her relationships.
The show does have importance because it brings up serious issues and presents some positive female role models. It is pretty different from other crime shows and you have solid points but there's more to a TV show than political concerns and opening up dialogue on issues. I watched both seasons recently and while I liked it for the ideas you brought up when considering other aspects of it such as acting, composition and cinematography I don't see it being "great" or excellent.
@feministfrequency I just started watching the series, at least based on the pilot I thought the rape backstory was handled in a very realistic fashion... it was not the driving purpose of her character... but the police laughed her off, which in my experience really happens quite often and it was very subtle and understated.
@feministfrequency Okay I'm a few episodes in haven't gotten to that stuff yet but I was impressed with the way the Transwoman was dealt with in the Meet John Smith episode... yeah her son had a bad reaction but overall she was so normalized it's rare to see a transperson who isn't a criminal or a murder victim on TV. Or at the very best, comedy relief.
I'm interested in watching this show except I have one question. Is there any kind of rape involved? I purposely stay clear of any kind of media that has a rape scene or anything like that because it makes me really uncomfortable.
@00GreyEyedGirl00 Yes there is discussion of rape throughout all three seasons although it is not explicitly graphic, and sadly the show deals with sexual violence HORRIBLY.
I absolutely adore Veronica Mars. The fact that a show of its caliber could get cancelled, and a show like Jersey Shore makes the amount of money that it does, absolutely devastates me.
I may have commented before, but having blitzed through all 3 season of VM recently I would like to state that yes, dear goddes YES this show is awesome! Brilliant writing, acting, and story arcs, ohhh the story arcs! Normaly you have to turn to sci-fi, or fantasy for actualy story arcs that are worth a damn (with anime coming in at the top in general) but this show has really strong conections between episodes, and even seas to season foreshadowing. All around awesome.
@brittanymorin121 I have SERIOUS issues with Logan and Veronica and the second time I watched the series I realized just how horrible it really is. I probably won't go into that in a video but you could ask me on formspring and hopefully I can give a more in depth answer.
I just wanted to mention that I started watching this show in large part because of this video. I agree that it does a pretty terrible job of dealing with rape and sexual assault. Looking forward to watching your video on that topic, because I'm sure you could express it more eloquently than I could.
Wow, how did I not find your vlog until now? Great stuff. Seriously, thank you. A lot of people I really respect love this show, and you really break it down for us. Thanks again.
This is the third video of your I've watched and I am sooo subbing.
I also love the first two seasons of Veronica Mars, but I refuse to watch the third one. I heard it was terrible. My friend, however, fell in love with the show, and watched it, and she was...on the fence about the third season, I guess. Heh.
almost lost me at "josh whedon". :( although, as a huge *joss* whedon fan, i agree that season one of veronica mars is better in its own scope. as a whole, though, all seven seasons of buffy outweigh veronica mars. they deal with a much wider range of issues a teen girl and adult female deal with as well as actually having other characters who have their own stories; veronica mars never really does this.
@debthesibyl true... and I don't actual mean to put them into competition since I LOVE them both, I was just thinking about how much more difficult it is to write for "real world" situations instead of fantasy, because in fantasy you can always just make stuff up as needed (obviously it's not *that* simple, but hopefully you get what I mean).
@azz100p Thanks, I definitely try to be more fun and interesting then academics. I did not like Party Down at all, I watched about 6 episodes. It wasn't my kind of humour, it was very dry, but in addition to that, I didn't care for the characters, I thought it was terribly sexist most of the time (without comment or criticism of it by other characters) and frankly, I imagine most people don't care about LA and LA life if they've never lived there.
Hi! Just found your channel and saw this video. I'm a big fan of Veronica Mars but I've only seen the first season. Your talking about addressing the problems with the sexual abuse got me really interested, but it seems you haven't made a video about it yet. Hope you will soon, I'd like to see what you have to say!
So what happened about the dedicated series three video?
I've read some pretty damning reviews of Sex in the City 2. I think you should jump on that band wagon ASAP. It would be good for your views. (Says the guy who hasn't uploaded a new video for over a year.)
I get that you're a feminist, and that's great. I love that women are sticking up for their rights. With me being African-American, I really do understand. But I have to say that this show is terrible. The only reason you enjoy it is because of your feminist views. I can't get passed the terrible acting enough for me to even try and enjoy it. It might be a good idea, but as a television show.... it's very poor. Keep doing what you're doing. But don't let it cloud your judgement of everything.
It suprises me that you think the acting is so bad - when i see a movie/series, it usually takes me 5 minutes to see whether the acting is good or bad. But Veronica Mars is one of those series that I think has the best actors/actress. Kristen Bell is fantastic. (of course, they're not Tom cruise, brad pitt or meryl streep, if you know what I mean) :)
@ngordon88 I'm a male, heterosexual, "african-american" male as well and I think this show was impressively well written. It's kind of insulting to insinuate that the only reason somebody enjoys something is because of some ideological high horse they're riding around on. Do you only enjoy [insert something made by or staring a black actor or musician] because of your ethnicity? Anyhow, she explains fairly well her rationale for the positive opinion.
Not really a fan of Dawson's Creek, but have you seen Rob Thomas' show on Starz, "Party Down?" It's a hilarious manners-comedy, you might enjoy it. Or you could critique the hell out of it. ;)
It has 'interesting' ways of dealing with issues of race, age, social class, and als kind of gender (the female lead, a working comedian holding down a job as caterer with the Party Down Co, must rather smartly deal w/ constant crap ).
i was watching your new video, re: caprica, with my wife and she had me click through to watch this. i think there's a parallel between that video and the show's treatment of beaver. i've been to a q&a with rob thomas, the creator of veronica mars, and he seems like a progressive thinker. i wonder what he would say about writing the "homosexual=crazy" cliche.
@jaireaux I think that Rob Thomas did some great things with Veronica Mars, definitely one of my favourite shows, but when it comes to sexuality or dealing with sexual abuse he failed enormously. I was pretty horrified at what they did with Beaver's character.
@feministfrequency I think you're wrong on two counts: 1) Beaver is attracted to women; I don't think the abuse he suffered made him gay, but unable to function sexually (though I could be wrong), 2) I don't think that RT fell into gay=evil b/c there were tons of positive gay characters. Gay characters, just like straight ones, should not be exempt from being the bad guys because they are gay. It would be problematic if most/all gays in VM were evil, but they're not.
@LadyD224 I was a bit unclear, I meant they way they dealt with sex and sexual abuse, not sexual preference, and I didn't say that Beaver's character was gay.
@feministfrequency I should add that I have a big problem with the way they dealt with female sexuality in VM. Veronica, Parker, Meg and Mac are all sexually traumatized/punished for exploring their sexuality, while their male counterparts who are promiscuous are not. The only sexually liberated woman who is NOT punished in the show is an antagonist: Madison. I might write a blog about it. Here's my blog about S3: myvanishedmuseDOTwordpressDOTcom/2010/02/04/we-used-to-be-friends/
I never watched this show because of the comparison with Buffy. Haha which makes no sense because it's my favorite show. My mom LOVED Veronica Mars so it became a contest or something and I just refused to watch it.
I really regret it because now the show is off and it I knew it was a good show...I was just in serious denial. Anyway I agree with Underwaterfloods, I'm curious about your opinion on Buffy.
Veronica Mars was one of my favorite shows on television. The only real problem I had with the show was that the writers seemed to be obsessed with rape as a plotline. If you could guess nothing else about what was going to happen in the show you could safely guess that someone was going to be raped. Other than that, fantastic show! I own all three seasons. Can't wait for the movie!
Economic strawman are neither witty nor smart, and only funny in how they ostentatiously present something as banal as class warfare as an insight that hasn't been a popular subject since the early 20th century.
Def agree that Season 3 was unwatchable (I actually stopped watching half way through) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the first two. Season 1 is by far the best tho.
my absolute favorite show EVER. i am so happy you did this. I have to admit though, i am such a Veronica Mars sucker.. that i bought season 3 too. lol :D
whoa whoa whoa. you have NO idea how big a vmars fan i am...BUT i will disagree with you that the third season was unwatchable. the third season wasnt on par with the other two, ill give you that, but it was still vmars and WAY better than other tv shows. im just saying. but kudos on everything else said. VM ROCKS.
Okay next time i will wait until i actually watched the video before i comment because you talk about the "suckiness" of season 3 (can't wait fro your video about it :P) But yes, this show is definitely worth watching. Even though it has flaw, the qualities totally make up for most of them... but something that always bothered me is the old veronica, the girl has no personality compared to nowdays veronica... anyway awesome video. You're awesome :D
omagawd, just hearing the music in the beginning makes me soo sad, we need a VM movie absolutely! :'( (and i have to see season 3 -_- even thought i heard it sucked compared to the first two)
I miss Buffy...
Now you made me sad D=

whoa whoa whoa. you have NO idea how big a vmars fan i am...BUT i will disagree with you that the third season was unwatchable. the third season wasnt on par with the other two, ill give you that, but it was still vmars and WAY better than other tv shows. im just saying. but kudos on everything else said. VM ROCKS.

Best show ever!!! I hate that you say not to watch season three. True that it's not as good as the first two but still really REALLY good.

You should put up a spoiler warning. The Troy story line is too good to give away the climax.
3:10-4:00 is the part to skip if you haven't seen Season 1.

yes, season 3 isn't as good as 1 and 2, but it's still better than most tv.

Yeah, I really hate season three. But I loooove Veronica Mars. And Buffy.
