  • i watched it on the site called misstubeidol

    just search it :)

  • Oh I watched this at my theater when i was 7 and the woman in black would randomly pop up beside u if u stood on the ends of the rows and she popped up beside me I never want to go through that again

  • dont watch this movie...boring as hell

  • Why WHY did I watch this Christmas eve 1989? It's ruined my life. DO NOT watch this if your a kid!!!! Ive never slept properly since. I'm 34 now.

  • i saw my first version of this after reading the orignial book and then seeing the theatre production of it,just a word of warning - if you see a late version of this you will not sleep. If you see it in the afternoon you might stand a chance :) its bloody terrifying,in the the theatre the woman in black brushed passed me as she walked through the audience. Didnt sleep that night ;) fantastic play, great book not looking forward to the new cinema version.

  • thats the mother of sirius black!!!lol

  • @pain8520 I haven't watched it yet but will be later tonight. However, your comment now makes me think of the title more like a bizarre porno between his mum and dad....This just skewed my whole perception on this, lmao!

  • Blurry-_-

  • You know what the cool part is? The main character in the film played harry potter's dad in the first harry potter films. Harry potter is now playing the main character in the remake!

  • i watched this in an English class today. the teacher told us to pack up then watch the last scene she was going to show us.

after it, the girls were shaking and hugging each other and all the boys were on the brink of tears.

    never again.

  • thank you for uploading. this is the most petrifying film ever released.

  • seen the play, its so good

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I originally saw this on the ABC when I was at high school and it gave me the heebies. Have since read the book and saw the stage play here in Brisbane a couple of years ago (the play was equally scary). Have watched this again and it still terrifies me - a good quality ghost story without all the crap special fx!

  • I read somewhere that the author doesn't like this version. She disowned it, and is more behind the new movie version.

  • I read the book yesterday ... not knowing there was a movie? apparently they're also making a new one. I'm scared shitless even before the movie starts because the book is very scary.

  • I have been trying to find this, it was in 1989! wow, now i know the year i saw it. I recall watching this when i was a young boy, 8, in fact. I vividly remember seeing the figure of the ''woman in black'' and how it sent shivers through my body. It's amazing to see it again after all this time, all those memories are coming back to me.

  • this movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I ended up speeping on the floor of my parents room for 3 months!

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful. The story is playing now on BBC4 Extra

    Love the tail so much

  • What I never understood is who exactly is the woman getting revenge on? I've only seen bits and pieces of this so I probably missed it, I'm just confused as to why all the synopsis' say that she is a vengeful spirit

  • a little better quality at let me watch this . com without spaces just type in the woman in black click on novamov link im not (this isnt spam) enjoy! :)

  • Thank you for this film, saw it a few years ago, great to watch again though. there is a new Woman In Black BUT this one is the BEST by far, the oldies are the best. This one is just so much scarier than the new one, saw the new trailer and it looks rubbish compared to this. Hadiyah.x

  • thank-you again for taking the time to shre this with me. I love a good yarn and this is a good stcharacter driven erie ghost story

  • thank-you for loading this. Im reading the book and antcipating the daniel radclff movie. I actually fornd this first and watched it months ago before I found the daniel radcliff movie trailers on you tube and before I bought the book. Im really enjoying the book and highly recommend it to readers who havent read a good ghost story since "THE Haunting" by SHirley Knight- (king of ghost stories in my humble opinion)

    .

  • This cries out for a rerelease. Maybe the alleged remake will finally see the damn thing come out on DVD.

  • If this is set in the Victorian era how would they know of Charlie Chaplin?

    Continuity fail.

  • @HayleysHappy

It's just after WWI. Remember the Authur's client in the office at the begining of the movie? He had been gassed in the trenches. So WWI, and hell yes they'd have known about Charlie Chaplin. Also - the truck carrying the logs that gets stuck and almost kills the gypsy girl, as well as Mr. Toovy's Rolls Royce are NOT Victorian.

Not a continuity fail: viewer fail.

  • @Iamranwulf

Well I do apologize! Sorry that i'm familiar with the original book and play that are explicitly Victorian. No need oto be a self righteous prick.

  • He's called Arthur Kipps

  • this is the old one from the 89 . so daniel takes adrians place in a modern version , i guess!!!! . The woman in black looks the same as that in the Daniels version !!!

  • I've read the book, and saw the play in London. Scared the crap out of me. Decided I might as well watch the movie, to get the full scare in. LOL! Also looking forward to seeing the Daniel Radcliffe version when that comes out [hope it comes out in the theatres here in the states...or i may just have to fly to London, lol]

  • Scared the shit out of me when I was younger, this was 1st shown Christmas Eve 1989.

  • Does anyone know a website where you can see the DVD quality movie? I searched about 20 websites today and they all had broken links.

  • @TheAlexis4444 The quality here is blocky, which I'm really sorry about but unfortunately that's down to Youtube's compression. I own the original dvd, & the quality isn't what you would expect these days given that everything is HD now. The film is over twenty years old & retains its grainy quality even on the disc, which is probably just a bit better than VHS used to be.

I don't know of anywhere else you can find this film, but hope you enjoyed it anyway, even though its not perfect :-)

  • @nicog79 yeah, thanks for posting. it is better than nothing, as websites don't have properly working links. I have one question about the movie, the woman in black is actually the bad younger sister who had the bastard child, isn't it? She's the one who troubled the older sister, whos funeral the lawyer went to?It is the mom and the daughter that does the hauntings. But what is the connection with other kid's epitaphs at the cemetary?

  • @TheAlexis4444 Yes, The Woman in Black had the child out of wedlock, her name was Jeanette Humfrye. He was in fact a little boy name Nathaniel, and his mother was forced to give him to his aunt and uncle, the Drablow's, to be raised as their own child.

As the local legend goes, her ghost is hell-bent on vengeance, and any child who sees her ghost will apparently die soon after. The story hints at the fact, if I remember rightly, that the Toovey's had a child who died after seeing her ghost.

  • @nicog79 but the bad woman ended up dying with her own son after the carriage fell over, right? Was it his ghost that gave the Toy to the lawyer? But who is the little girl involved, it sounded like a girl laughing.

  • @TheAlexis4444 As the story goes, the boy was killed when the Pony and Trap carrying him across the causeway fell into the marsh during a bad sea fog, and he drowned. His mother, Jeanette Humfrye, witnessed his death and was tormented by it. Jeanette later died, but she returned to haunt Eel Marsh House and Crythin Gifford.

The toy soldier was given by Nathaniel to Arthur Kidd, and as far as I know, the laughter was Nathaniel's. I dont recall there ever being a female child in the story.

  • @TheAlexis4444 *SPOILER*

  • @nicog79 The quality is fine, thank you for uploading it.

  • @nicog79 Have you ever thought about trying to reload it in 480 or more? Or is that just not doable given the age of the DVD? I keep hoping the remake will bring about a DVD rerelease of this one, but it sounds like the rights are an utter mess.

  • @TheAlexis4444 maybe try buying it?!? What do u expect, this is FREE entertainment, beggers cant be choosy...

  • @bryantppierce yea, I wish it was available on sale, but they don't even know this movie in our country.... thats why we have to watch in online. Not everyone who watch things online is a begger, they maybe watching it online because the movie is not available in their country... ok? but whoever posted this, thank you for posting the movie.

  • @TheAlexis4444 Hello you can get it from Amazon just ordered it myself

  • i so recall when they showed this on telly..bc 2 i think.scared the bejesus out of me.....it classic,, what u don't see .......

  • Great! Thanks for uploading!

  • omg thats james potter aka harry potters dad james ! adrian rawlins! and daniel radcliffes remake aka who played harry potter is out in october im going to see it!!!!

  • i wanna slap them every time they say "mr Kidd" its KIPPS

  • @4eyes94 i KNOW! Why change the name?

  • @kiwimci it doesnt really make any sense, and they changed the ending which was equally pointless

  • This film scared me for life, it's beyond scary. I don't recommend watching it. I've never been the same after watching it years ago. Chilling.

  • I have a question, does anyone know if the film is the same as the book? because I have to read this book but I just wanna see the movie:D

  • Thanks for this great vid. (But I don't recommend it for kids under age of 14 or so....)

  • Thank you nicog79 for this wonderful film.

  • i just saw this yesterday at the fortune theatre. Scared the life out of me!!

  • i wish i could get this on dvd,i have loved this ghostly tale for years and i wish they would put this on tv again its an absolute classic.

  • thumbs up if your only watching this because the kid from harry potter is in the remake

  • crap film i watched it earlier. Absolute rubbish. I was pleased the dog was found safe and well though lol.

  • @Terminator860 why crap?

  • @DaveAKATheNewRexHunt It was just really boring.

  • @Terminator860 i think its a matter of taste really. tbh this films the sort that relies on its audiences imagination to scare them.

personally i found this film terrifying, just like i felt when i watch "the ring" and "amyteville horror". however visually frightening stuff like "saw" and "final destination" dont scare me at all

i also like films with plenty of backstory and not just "oh look theres some random guy running at me from the forest wielding an axe"

  • @trema006 Good post. I guess i just need more of an imagination. lol

  • the creepiest movie i've seen in my whole life..

  • @lostsoul808 same. it terrified me, but it was awesome.

  • @lostsoul808 Your right there very creepy i wouldnt leave the house if i were you as that old lady in the black dress might get you!!!! ha ha ha

  • I went to see the production of The Woman in Black last night at The Fortune Theatre in London, and the solicitor was called Arthur Kipps?

  • @chazztheman1 Yeah, the film maker changed his name for some pointless reason, I think :L

  • Incidentally, if you're in Britain and can get to the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire for a couple of hours this film is one of the many hundreds of pieces of classic British TV which can be viewed there, in its entirety, in its original quality, for free, on a large TV screen. All you have to do is ask and pick a viewing booth, and you'll need sufficient time to see it all. Unfortunately the museum does not posess a version which it can sell (I asked, of course).

  • Nicog79, thank yo so much for uploading this otherwise unobtainable classic. I saw this once only when it was originally broadcast here in Britain and made the mistake of not recording it when I had the chance. I'm hoping that the interest generated by the new (likely to be inferior) film version of this will persuade the rights holders for this version to re-release it, Fingers crossed.

  • its from the 20s not victorian

  • Loll i just did a whole drama exam on it, after seeing the theatre production. I prefer the theatre production, as you feel more involved with the women in black.. much more scarier.

  • best horror movie ever

  • anyone know why they changed his name to Kidd? It was Kipps in the book as I remember, seems odd to change it for no reason

  • Wow. Thanks so much for posting this although don't know if I can actually watch it as it is THE scariest thing I have ever seen and I love horror. The Japanese version of Grudge and Ringu pale into comparison with this creepy stuff.

Never saw it to the end as it scared me too much and I do think it psychologically damaged me to be honest. Oh well here goes!

  • I'm glad you uploaded this. I haven't seen it since the 1980s and there is only one used copy of the DVD for sale on amazon.ca.

The dreary, dark atmosphere of this piece is what makes it a masterpiece!

  • daniel will be playing arthur kipps

  • i'm watching this ready for the re release next year in 3D with daniel radcliffe playing the solicitar yeh lol

  • I first saw this on an old grainy VHS. ThenI got to see it on a new clear DVD. A less than perfect picture actually gives the film some of it's creepiness. I never watch it on the DVD.

  • aint it ment to be Arthur KIPPS!! x

  • The only horror that matches this is The Uninvited with Ray Milland made in 1942ish. So, so scary.

  • i saw this live n damn its worse than paronormal activity but then again that wernt scary but this is

  • thanks for posting and sharing this!

  • Thanks for uploading but the quality could have been a tad better :)

  • @ComedyRoundTheCorner

You're very welcome, and as for the quality, you can blame youtube for that :)

  • @nicog79

I would have said "... you can blame youtube for that, and you can go stick it up your ass - be thankful for what you're given!"... but that's just me.

  • is this the same movie that Daniel Radcliffe's gonna be starring in?

  • @izyice1

yes, it is due to be released in the cinemas in 2011

  • @izyice1

Yes, it is, according to news reports.

  • @nicog79 DANIEL RADCLIFFE??!!!NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!TAKE ME NOW, LORD, TAKE ME NOW!!! NOT MY FAVOURITE FILM OF ALL TIME!!

  • @nicog79 if he is then he'll be playing one of the youngest solicitors on film.

  • @izyice1 the original one.

  • @izyice1 yes which will be relased early 2012 :L

  • saw the stage play of this film at London's west end Fortune Theatre last year and it was brilliant!!!!!

  • nicog79, thanks so much for uploading this, i love it its one of my absaloute faves, youre a star, many thanks x

  • I saw the stage version last christmas in london...holy shit it scared the crap out of me! if you haven't seen it and you like this then SEE IT!!

  • i remember the 2 man play they did in london a couple years ago. it was so good, i went to see it 3 times. :)

  • @magicalwizardeast they still do it, i saw it a couple of weeks ago, it was cool

  • @GazzaGlitta oh really??? i thought they changed it up and added more cast members.... i'll have to go see it again, thanks!!! :)

  • @magicalwizardeast you should, it was great. Fortune theatre covent garden if you didnt know.

  • @GazzaGlitta omg, thank you so much! im gonna go book my tickets now. :)

  • this, and the original version of the Haunting are the best horror films I've ever seen

    thanks for uploading this!!!

  • I read the book when I was about 9. So well written, with the psychological brilliance of 'Turn of the Screw. And with really gruesome, chilling scenes. Has stood the test of time as one of the scariest books for me.

  • Just finished watching the last clip. A TOTALLY excellent film. Gave me a real scare more than a few times, and that is hard to do. Thanks for uploading nicog79. I hope you keep it available, because it's a hard film to find from what I've seen in the other comments.

  • I went to see this in sheffield a few months back for my drama GCSE, to write about in the exam, and it absolutley terrified me, i didnt get ANY notes down at all

to make matters worse, we were sat right next to the speakers so any sound effects were multiplyed by about 20!

it was a great play though, i thoroughly reccomend it :)

    thanks for uploading nicog79 :) x

  • I saw this film years ago. A true english ghost story.

  • there was tv movie kinda like this. A hateful mother loses her husband, and while her daughter is at the funeral party, the mother smashes the picture of her daughter and runs out of a door, going into the ocean drowning herself. Years later the ghost haunts her daughter, does anyone know what this movie is called?

  • i seen this being performed in grand oprea house in belfast.creepy as fuck

  • i have seen it in theatre with school and i lovge it soo much

  • Does it really matter. Leave the poor guy alone. He was good enough to put it up and I for one appreciate that. Great movie.

  • thanks for posting this! According to the Internet Movie Database, this was last shown on British TV in 1994. That would be when I watched it, I was 12 at the time, and I recall one scene when SHE appears in the bedroom I think...No scene has ever CHILLED me that much to this day....and now I can watch it again..!! Lets see if it still affects me.....

  • @TSchnell82 I quite agree & I have still not plucked up the courage to watch it again yet! This was probably one of the most chilling programs ever made. Forget Hollywood with its huge budgets. Atmosphere is everything; & that's probably why they haven't put it on TV since. It sacred th shit out of everybody!

  • It deserves a proper Dvd/blu-ray release. Apparently Susan Hill didn't like this rendition, but I think Nigel Kneale did an excellent job in not only adapting the story, but enhancing it... Great dialogue... Therefore the book, the play, the TV film can all be appreciated for their appropriate merits!

  • The bbc or itv made it i forget but anyways it baned lol its not allowed be relased or showen for some reason

  • Oh my, I went to see this in theatre....Holy crap I have never screamed so much in all my life. Amazing!!!!!!!!!! x x x x x x x x

  • Christ i nearly shat meself when i first saw this film ! i was about 7yo...i didnt sleep for days and when i look across paddocks, farmland and moors....it still gives me a chill!

  • Sorry nicog 79 - it can't be a Victorian ghost story because - solicitor was representing someone gassed in the trenches [ 1914- 1918 - 1st World War] and there is a bus in the film....George the fifth was on the throne until 1936...from 1910...

  • I would say thanks for the message, but its contents would imply you believe me to be some sort of idiot. Firstly, I didn't compose the synopsis, and secondly, I'm English so I know exactly how long King George V was on the throne for.

Nothing wrong with you being knowledgeable, it's just your assumption that nobody else is that may put the wrong slant on things.

  • I didn't wish to give the impression that you were an idiot ? Who wrote the sypnopsis? It might be worth having a word with them... I personally wouldn't put my name next to something someone else had written, for this very reason.... If you look at further comments on different parts of the film , you will also see others have questioned the era it is set in, with their comments too...

  • I have no idea who wrote the synopsis, it was quite some time ago. I was busy and I needed a description so that people would understand the plot before watching.

I wouldn't put my name next to something innacurate either, that is if it really mattered, but fact is, it doesn't. It hasn't detracted from the story in any way. The difference was the tone in which you questioned it, which did indeed sound as if you believed me to be a moron. You know, sometimes life is too short...

  • Exactly nicog 79- life is too short - so stop this niggling?

  • As far as I was concerned, the matter was already closed.

  • @sueykins oh shat ya face!

  • It's always been at The Fortune. I think its been running for 20 or so years.

  • In the theatre i bricked myself senseless, never been so afraid in my life.

  • Same, I was sat right next to a speaker so I jumped a lot.

Did you see the version where they are acting it out? Arthur is telling the story through the play?

  • @SlasherCheetah Man it was a few years ago now. ummm i honestly can't remember i saw it at the Theatre near covent garden and I just remembered how terrified I was throughout. The scariest part was the rocking chair and the ending. Haven't found a movie that comes close to the fear, I was just frozen throughout!

  • The rocking chair!

  • they're making a new one!

  • Everyone I know tells me this movie is the scariest ever made....

  • Wonderful! One of the best ghost stories on film...I remember being terrified to the point of being catatonic as a child !!

  • It's brilliant to watch on stage, I was part of another drama group that went to see it. Though it would have been a lot better if we weren't surrounded by idiot kids from another school who keep ruining it with their pathetic squealing and dumbass taunts.

  • @EdsAlchemistFriend saw this today, and ditto, bloody CHAV schools mucked it up. But still a brilliant play!

  • @berehed our school was pretty damn scared of it, we screamed when there was the scream!

  • the woman in black

    scary shit dude

    scary !

  • Saw it today at the Lowry theatre in manchester. It was amazing! Our drama class were also shaking! My friend next to me was cringing with fright! haha. I think it was mainly the screams that got us!

  • especially when she appears at the back (N)

  • I've searched everywhere for this film :-)

  • i know, shame it isn't properly shown again on tv. My sister ordered a copy of it from the states. Such a good film- one of my fave ghost stories.

  • Comment removed

  • Seeing it soon - I Think my class will be crying XD - Including me lol x

  • Oh wow can't believe this is on here, been looking for this for ages. I remember watching this one Xmas Eve with my mum, needless to say I looked under the bed that night, scary as hell.

  • I'm hard as nails but not after watching this I wasn't.

  • I saw this in London. It was amazing but realy scary, I came out shaking and almost crying!

  • This is one scary ghost film..I won't watch it alone, especially at night.

  • i've seen the pay a few times, it's brilliant and scary as hell

  • arthur kipps

  • What's the name of the solicitor character?

  • i went to see this in the theatre last night, it was a truely amazing performance and i thoroughly enjoyed it, its realy worth going to see it in the theatre :)

  • Great movie!

    Thank you sooooooooo much!

  • i saw this in the theatre!

  • It was a made for TV movie :/

  • me too! its just brilliant isnt it!

  • was it realy scary cause im goin to see it and everyone says its sooo goooddddd

    but it makes you scream

  • the dog does survive

i went to a theatre in london to see it last night.

it was the most boring thing ever - until the second half. then the theatre was full of screaming., but Yeah the dog does survive - or at least it did last night,

  • i went thursday omg

    it was madd :L

    xx

  • In the play the dog doesn't survive. I've seen it 3 times & acted in school productions of it. It is the most amazing play I've seen. The first act is pretty boring especially when he's reading from his manuscript. The second half was terrifying. Everyone was screaming & people were even crying. Recommended. :)

  • poor dog...I thought he did...=(

  • the guy who plays arthur is pretty attractive (no homo)

  • Saw this at the Fortune Theatre, London, England last night. GOD the first act was boringg!

Then the second act scared me giddy. My friend had his head in his hands shaking, the atmosphere was intense :|

  • Me to, i went with our school drama group the first half was boring but i was craping my self on the second half :P

  • It's Arthur Kipp, not Kidd

  • Learning about this in English atm, it sounds wonderful. My teacher reccomended it (he also went on to talk about 'shrooms the next moment...)

  • we are studying this in drama , we went to see it in the west end on Tuesday. i can not explain how amazing it was the film is nothing compared to the stage version. i recommend you see it. :)

  • Great book aswell just finished reading it. sad but very good

  • my aunt wrote it

  • i am so lonely right now

  • This is one of my favorite spooky movies. Thanks very much for the upload. The ghost attack "bed horror" scene is real nightmare material! I have the Susan Hill book that it came from, & a copy of the movie on DVD. It is a little hard to find. Amazon has it for awhile, & is then sold out for long periods. During the sold-out times, used copies of it are available but expensive.

  • I think I'll try and read the book now. Even though I normally hate scary stuff...I saw the play in London but great theatre.

  • my aunt wrote the book =P

  • is that true?

  • yeah....she's married to my uncle stanley

  • quite possibly the scariest thing I have read, watched or seen on stage. Or even, the only thing... Bloody amazing

  • You would love the stage version.

  • Seen the stage version ages ago. Pissed myself laughing through the first act and pissed myself in the second XD

  • Its Arthur Kipps actually, not Kidd. Well, in the book it is

  • recently saw this in the west end.absolutely fantastic...scared the devil out of me....book is wonderful also

  • the audio book has a different ending to the film though.

  • Have this on dvd such a great film
