we must 'respect' religion because deists have historically resorted to violence when not respected, or listened to, or acknowledged. Religions are dangerous. Don't know how their gods can stomach the religious massacres that have happened throughout history.
I do think the strawberry pudding thing is pretty stupid. I certainly don't think people are entitled to respect. Religious people believe they are experiencing proof of a deity. Because these experiences cannot be measured or reproduced does not mean that they aren't potentially reflections of reality. I do not affirm their experiences, nor do I think this is a necessarily relativist position.
@sodacop "Because these experiences cannot be measured or reproduced does not mean that they aren't potentially reflections of reality. "
I'll give you that they are reflections of reality in the sense that anything we can imagine is a reflection of reality, "reflection" being the key. And religion reflects the very real desire for eternal life, a higher purpose, and constant divine consolation/intervention.
@infideluxe Hi :). I'll use an example that might work to help explain what I mean. Let's say someone has what she believes to be a vision of god. This experience cannot be confirmed in any scientific way because it is particular to a single person, and cannot be easily reproduced in another. The prudent scientist would come to the conclusion that this kind of "evidence" for the existence of her god is outside the realm of scientific measurement.
@sodacop "Outside the realm of scientific measurement"? No prudence there. I think brain science (neuroimaging) is making great progress, and that a "god area" of the brain is a good possibility, and can be measured. The prudent scientist would not assume this vision as "evidence" for or against any existence of a god, but only as a human experience that can be examined via the brain.
@infideluxe The bad scientist, on the other hand, will conclude that because her vision cannot be confirmed by science, it must not have any grounding in what is real or true.
@sodacop Subjective experiences are real . They occur inside the subject's mind/brain and so are not a reflection of objective reality.
As such, the brain can be studied with attention to such matters.
The bad scientist will conclude that science has no place in attempting to figure this out. The good scientist tries, and will aspire to figure out the cause. "Increased dopamine activity in the mesolimbic pathway of the brain is consistently found in schizophrenic individuals." (Wikipedia)

...how can they be androids and zombies? Don't zombies require dead and then reanimated biological matter? Wouldn't a 'dead' android merely be 'repaired' if restored to operation and not really count as undead? Now, cyborg zombies, that's a-okay! And thanks for not using raccoons as raw materials for this army. But if you have an opening for a cyborg non-zombie raccoon, let me know okay?

@BionicDance I don't think so. I've never heard of Omninerd, to my knowledge. In any case, it is a great tune. Thanks for turning me on to Kevin MacLeod's stuff. I will be sure to support him by stealing his music whenever possible.
I'm a little late, but this music feels a lot like early Final Fantasy music. From 2 or 3. That, and it's available to basically anyone who wants to use it, so it's spread around quite a bit.
If someone is going to talk about their ideas or beliefs, they had better be able to handle what I might have to say in response. If a person doesn't want feedback about their religious assertions they should shut the fuck up. I'm under no condition to respect anyones beliefs.
Cute ending! And I must say, there are worse ways to die than falling off a cliff into strawberry pudding while immolating. You could fall into a pit of tar... or maybe the Gulf of Mexico with its oil slicks, and have a nice little bar-be-que first.
My dead baby is tasting lovely mixed up with strawberry pudding. But then experimentation with cooking has always been such a ... drag, actually. I'd rathe rkill a newborn and eat that with my man-fanny weeping as the bun relish.
@BionicDance Reasons or real hard facts? It's strange how they both get confused. The man you talk of was demonstrating in his own nonviolent way his opposition against his govt's atrocities when no other way was made available. It's easy to say such things when you where there to witness or understand the people struggle. Thus is another story of lack of sensibility to anothers plit. Real rationality at work.
I think because religion is such a heavily emotional investment people demand respect for it. . Combined that with an air of legitimacy from the belief being traditional, cultural, or ancient you have a subject many would become hostile over at the drop of a hat. When our beliefs define us criticism becomes personal attacks and insults.
The dousing in kerosene and lighting on fire makes me think of the self-immolating monks, particularly the ones that did it as a form of protest against the roman catholic government.

However, I was glad to visit the place and will go back because they still commemorate my great grandmother -whom they still refer to as Mother McGlaughlin." It's weird because it's my families legacy and I have no respect for religion, and still, very happy they that kept the place up.
I'm not scared of an army of android ninja zombie squires, I have an elite squadron of cyborg space vampire pirate badgers. Armed with homoeopathic bullets in their automatic slingshots with astrological scopes.
Bahhhh I will see your zombie squirrels and send you rabid wererabits after you :> Every full moon you will become a nice light snack to everything in the neighborhood!!!! ahem. :>
It's called "Scheming Weasel", and there'z a link to Kevin MacLeod's site in the crotchbar; he's got TONS of royalty-free music! And that tune is one of 'em.
Ok, I'll play devil's advocate again. Let's say you are in a room with a majority of religious and somewhat religious people of different faiths, and these people all thought that individual beliefs should be respected. Even if you are elegant with your words in pointing out obvious flaws in doctrine and dogma in one paticular faith, you will be repremanded by the majority. Dawkins found this out in a recent Q&A that was posted on Youtube.
@BionicDance "...and?" Only so much space in one of these boxes.
Well, if one would rather not be shunned at certain gatherings, I'd say respect is in order. Avoiding these situations is not always possible. For example. If I'm a guest and the host gives thanks to God for the meal, I would not point out it is really the guest who is the person to thank, and that he was foolish for thinking otherwise. Rather, I'd say "Ahem" so as not to cause a scene.
the situation you describe is coercion. "I don't want to be punished by the religious in the room, so I'll keep quiet." That's not respect, that's fear. and it's what the deists have used throughout history to maintain their societal control. that's the bottom line of the religious hierarchy - control of the masses.
@gigantibyte Were you in a family with multiple religious beliefs or even denominations or sects? They play the respect faith card unless it's not their faith or religion. Take a look around youtube and you'll see lots of evidence or I can provide it because I made the claim. I was also in such a family and the only thing that unites them is hating us and illusions of rewards or punishment. Good, maybe people will start to understand why non believers are angry or silent.
@Mephistophilus My immediate family is Catholic, but I have aunts and uncles in different flavors of Protestant. But religion has never been debated. The situations where respect has come into play (in my experiences) has mostly been at work, or at the homes of different people. Anyhow, Kate is talking about having respect, as opposed to showing respect. My outward respect still depends on the situation. It's a fine line sometimes.
Wow, I can't believe that you only get 2-3K typical views. Your ideas, and your means to convey them are terrific. And please believe me: I really, really hate squirrels.
"You're a fucking idiot!" My usual answer."Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions."~Thomas Jefferson. He was talking about religion! lol Brilliant man!
Actually the "Heaven's Gate" religious cult actually DID practise ritual castration. So you were trying to be "far out" in order to make a point. But religious reality can be super far out!
There's a difference between being respectful and being tolerant. I'll be tolerant of someones religious, but I won't respect them. And if they come out with some blatantly wrong or bigoted statements, you can bet I'll set them straight!
Can I just ask, what aspect ratio do you render your videos in? I render with 720x405, and I alway get annoying little single-pixel black lines running down the side of my videos. Its frustrating as hell.
Good video by the way. The animation at the end was great.
@LatumWay My vids are 640x360, the exact resolution of the YouTube window. I could probably make 'em bigger, make 'em high-def, but these render and upload FAST, which is a plus for someone with weapons-grade ADD like I've got! :D
Glad you dug the animation at the end; I was afraid people would get on me for being a sub-whore, but they seem to like it! :)
Do you know how many times I have had to bite my tounge in class when my teacher tells us 'You have to respect every child's beliefs'
It actually makes me want to headdesk. You know if a parent raises their child to believe that homosexuality is evil, we're not even allowed to disagree we have to respect their families wishes.
It really does. Especially when you have two Mormons in your class who try to explain how a 4 year old child can have a balanced understanding and opinion on god.
I think that people too often conflate respecting and not harassing. If someone believes stupid shit I don't have to respect them at all and can be as vocal as I want in my refutation, but it probably should not harass them over it unless their idea happens to be harming me.
Unfortunately, thinking is too painful for people to do it seems. Personally, I think it feels good to think for myself. Being right is bliss, not ignorance.
On another note, sometimes when you're right about something you can expect to be called evil. I'd rather be evil than stupid. Does that make sense to you?
I agree. i'm not opposed to anyone having their own beliefs, but the demand for respect for their beliefs is a bit of a stretch. like their assertion that faith is a virtue.

Believe it or don't, I actually mean it as a compliment.

It's because you have an unusual distinctive voice. That could actually be quite an asset if you ever try to get any voice over type work.

@HomoCyborgZombie Yes, actually.
It's called "Scheming Weasel", and there'z a link to Kevin MacLeod's site in the crotchbar; he's got TONS of royalty-free music! And that tune is one of 'em.

Android ninja zombie squirrels? :O Good thing I'm already subscribed.

Dawkins found this out in a recent Q&A that was posted on Youtube.
gigantibyte 1 year ago
@gigantibyte ...and?
BionicDance 1 year ago
@BionicDance "...and?" Only so much space in one of these boxes.
Well, if one would rather not be shunned at certain gatherings, I'd say respect is in order. Avoiding these situations is not always possible. For example. If I'm a guest and the host gives thanks to God for the meal, I would not point out it is really the guest who is the person to thank, and that he was foolish for thinking otherwise. Rather, I'd say "Ahem" so as not to cause a scene.
gigantibyte 1 year ago
@gigantibyte You're talking about outward respect; it doesn't change how you ACTUALLY think.
BionicDance 1 year ago
@BionicDance To the faithful, outward respect can mean many things.
gigantibyte 1 year ago
@gigantibyte that is to say "Amen" :P
gigantibyte 1 year ago
@gigantibyte
the situation you describe is coercion. "I don't want to be punished by the religious in the room, so I'll keep quiet." That's not respect, that's fear. and it's what the deists have used throughout history to maintain their societal control. that's the bottom line of the religious hierarchy - control of the masses.
jjjohn 1 year ago
@gigantibyte Were you in a family with multiple religious beliefs or even denominations or sects? They play the respect faith card unless it's not their faith or religion. Take a look around youtube and you'll see lots of evidence or I can provide it because I made the claim. I was also in such a family and the only thing that unites them is hating us and illusions of rewards or punishment. Good, maybe people will start to understand why non believers are angry or silent.
Mephistophilus 1 year ago
@Mephistophilus My immediate family is Catholic, but I have aunts and uncles in different flavors of Protestant. But religion has never been debated. The situations where respect has come into play (in my experiences) has mostly been at work, or at the homes of different people. Anyhow, Kate is talking about having respect, as opposed to showing respect. My outward respect still depends on the situation. It's a fine line sometimes.

@CobraJones "Scheming Weasel".
It's by Kevin MacLeod, who puts his music out there royalty-free; a lotta YouTubers use his stuff. Link to his site in the crotchbar. :)

Wow, I can't believe that you only get 2-3K typical views. Your ideas, and your means to convey them are terrific. And please believe me: I really, really hate squirrels.

Actually the "Heaven's Gate" religious cult actually DID practise ritual castration. So you were trying to be "far out" in order to make a point. But religious reality can be super far out!
KasparHauser4 1 year ago
@KasparHauser4 Well, the part I was kidding about was that it was MY religion...I don't have one. :)
But, yeah, you're right; religions can be DEEPLY fucked up. Heh.

LatumWay 1 year ago

@ScouseCaspaXS Urgh! That would drive me 'round the dregging twist, that would!
People are DUMB. I find I'm forced to say that--if only to myself--at least once a day.

@BionicDance
It really does. Especially when you have two Mormons in your class who try to explain how a 4 year old child can have a balanced understanding and opinion on god.
Yeah they really are.

@ScouseCaspaXS Guh. The only good thing the Mormons ever did was invent "Battlestar Galactica". :P

Silly me. :)
Thanks for watching!
BionicDance 1 year ago
Well put, BD.
I think that people too often conflate respecting and not harassing. If someone believes stupid shit I don't have to respect them at all and can be as vocal as I want in my refutation, but it probably should not harass them over it unless their idea happens to be harming me.
Nobody likes butt-hurt crybabies!
