  • it shows the boot font and stop there what i have to do? intel dual core cpu1,6 Ghz nvidia geforce 8800 gts 2 gb ram transcend plz reply!

  • how do you make those switches between the workflows ?

    00:37

  • my grandmother can shoot better than you!

  • I got a question can Linux run games the same as Windows 7 or is linux more laggy?

  • which linux are u using?

  • Will this work:

    Latest version of Ubuntu 64bit

    3.3GHz dual-core processor

    1GB 800HMz graphics card

    4GB DDR3 RAM

Will it? I want it to run nice and smooth, does it run the same speed or faster than Windows XP? Thanks. :)

  • Finally decided to get serious about Linux, but I can't let go of my favorite past times, COD, thanks for the awesome demo, I can't wait to get my Linux gaming rig up and running!

  • @Steven707 while thats true playOnLinux does optimize WINE to make gaming simpler and cleaner, ye u can achieve the same by using only WINE but why burn your hair? let playOnLinux do the work

  • um...i have a question. i have heard linux is a great os to use. but...whats with all the windows bashing? ive been using windows for a long time. So could someone please give me an actual detailed reason why windows sucks. Cause i have never had one single problem with it. (btw im also a gamer, so make sure you say why linux is better for that as well)

  • @loddytoddy1991 Well one of the things that can cause issues with windows and slow computers with windows down is this simple thing im about to tell you. When you uninstall a program on windows, it leaves behind little files and stuff like that, that was used by the uninstalled programs. These little bits can build up over a bit of use and end up causing all kinds of conflicts and such. As for gaming , i have no idea.

  • nice. is it easy?

  • @No1bigred let me anwser for him. yes it easy. You just need wine and som winetricks and you are pretty much ready to play :) runs flawless maxed out on my laptop : )

  • I'm sorry but I'll be one of the hundreds that says this is a waste of time.. COD4 runs like garbage on WINE... just saying.

  • I have the linux cube desktop for windows XP and what i do is i porn surf on 1 side of the cube and do work on the other side so whenever someone enters my room i just flip the sides and they think i'm studying :D

  • @Trinitrotoluo Keeping window open as well? Otherwise someone will smell what you're doing there :)

  • Without Linux the computer world pretty much stops, most online game and web servers run on linux.

  • what the heck does this do?

  • im a linux now good bye windows hhehe im gonna buy linux soon

  • @Jversproduction why buy when you could download/use/distribute/modify for free?

  • Problem windowsfags?

  • so when it's running under wine does it use an emulated version of directx or does it use opengl?

  • You'll screw up th performance if you don't turn off the desktop effects or whatever they are called.

  • Wait, with those screens... I can play Call of Duty 4 while host is migrating? KEWL.

  • what is everyones perfect gun? i adore the rpg myself. it's easy to be able to kill everybody by using it! my roomie calls me the newbie for using it but who cares. i'm kind of new i suppose! however at the least i didnt have to pay for the game. i downloaded it absolutely free off mw2forfreeZinfo (replace Z with . ) a couple days ago

  • @dalehunt1 Hell yeah. Even after windows boots you have to wait forever before it's actually ready to do anything.

  • What are your computer system specifications?

  • That's mint.

  • No sound.

  • i never knew linux can play modern games but the only awesome game i know linux can play is heroes of newerth

  • Dude, did you have to do anything special? like modify anything?

ATI is a PAIN IN THE ASS for linux, im gonna go onto newegg and by me a nvidia video card. thats why i need to know if i do buy a nvidia card, what should i modify?

or does everything work out of the box?

  • @confessionsofapwner No Need :)

ATI users , check the ubuntu 10.10 news :D

    I got nvidia btw :P

  • ht tp://neo z.c omxa.co m/index.php

check ur steam wealth! only working!

  • You can always run COD4 on PlayOnLinux instead of Wine ive noticed PlayOnLinux is a lot cleaner... Plus you can use full screen lol.

  • @w0Rm210 Playonlinux is just a frontend for Wine.

    Wine does full screen, too.

  • @Bayonetta4 thats just the big problem getting the crowd to your os so if evry one started the use linux that the bases of the games get opengl and cl and that it all can run at linux and linux is better than mac why because it supports all the hardware and mac dedicates it

  • Hey can you allso install the 2 patches somehow? to play on private servers?

  • do it lagg lesser with linux?

  • wich app did you use for the screencasting?

I can't find any that gives reasonable fps :S

  • @Bayonetta4 Yeah, but how? There are a lot of tutorials of how install wine but none to run games on wine.

  • @Bayonetta4 ROFL !!!

  • how did you get call of duty did you dowload it or you have the cd

  • @ronyaldoloco1 Had the CD. Well, actually DVD

  • cedega or wine all alone?

  • ok thx

  • how much ram do u have and what graphic card do u have :)

  • @smexable 2GB RAM and the graphics card was an Evga Geforce 7600GT

  • linux sck digg

  • Can you run this on full screen ?

  • yes

  • @anthonyla45

He can but he don't know how

  • @anthonyla45 yes he can only he had to film this windowed because you can't film fullscreen it just shows you desktop and the programs that are runing

  • i think ubuntu is great! , and microsoft will never have 4 desktops just like ubuntu :D ( linux )

  • Oh you did the miracle.. Lol

  • Wow, you guys are really showing your intelligence with these posts...

    @mattverd24

If you can afford a computer, you can afford Windows. We use Linux because we like it better, not because it's $free.

    @Bayonetta4

There's nothing wrong with paying for software, developers gotta eat, too.

PS: I did all your moms, brothers, dads , sisters, aunts, uncles, and grandmas

  • @Steven707 now i wanna thumbs up you but i can't :'(

  • It's k

  • @Bayonetta4 rofl... only kids are calling other cunts and you said that im illatrate while writing ure... go suck your mom's dick. Linux is shit and you are shit buy Windows poor guy!!! im sooo mad for you because you don't have enough money to buy Windows so youre trying to defend a shitty product

  • @Bayonetta4 youre stupid... when you dont know shit about pc, dont talk like you knew everything when you dont even know what a videocard is

  • everybody stupid

  • how to install the game

  • (how) can i play online multiplayer on ubuntu 9.10 cod4?

  • Guys, you CAN run this in full screen. You just need to change your screen resolution. Also, in counter-strike to make the window full screen, you'd just have to go to options > video (I believe) and change the screen resolution.

  • its just a shame that is impossible to play fullscreen

a tip is to lower your screen resolution to match with the game's that way is maximized sill not fulscreen but who likes fulscreen anyway, just to have to press alt+tab to change the music

  • @kakita123 Who likes fullscreen anyway?? well 99% of the peoples.. it's so stupid to actually play game for fun when it's not fun because it's on some little window o_O

  • Nice. I know this can be done for more games than people think.

  • this is god

  • how do you do that box thing with the screen?

  • this is compiz. It's in desktop effects

  • Can you download games like combat arms? thats what i need to know

  • Comment removed

  • yes you can. i play it online in wine on linux mint 8 . retard.

  • WINE is not an emulator.

That`s what the initials stand for [Wine Is Not (an) Emulator]. So the game isn`t emulated. It`s actually running. Install XFire and you can play online. Even without it, if your game is original, then you can play online. Windowsfag.

  • I play online in the video

  • "Comment removed by author"

    oh

  • can linux play games that needs directX10.1?

cause I really want to play COD6 or even L4D2

  • COD6 works, not sure about L4D2.

    Check the Wine appdb

  • cod6 doesnt even have directx 10, they use dx 9 so you can play it! AND YES! that`s true! they made it directx 9 because they wanted all to game it, even xp users

  • @shaunztan Crossover games just announced that the new version has support for L4D2.

  • Can you run it in full screen?

  • People keep asking that.

    Yes, you can.

  • I wonder, having the 5000+, and a 8500gt, if I will get more fps than in Vista.

(I have Ubuntu 9 Jaunty as well)

  • no it wont but it would prob be the same

  • man, multiplayer works?

  • yeah it does

  • does anyone know if ubuntu is a 32-64 bit OS?

  • both

  • what's the resolution

  • I think I had the game running at like 1024x768

  • can wine be fullscreened? I know it's a noobish question but it seems everytime someone is using Wine they have it windowed.

  • Yeah, it's full screen by default.

  • they use window mode to prove that it's actually running on Linux...

  • @dudeeeeee16 so true.

  • @dudeeeeee16 it is actually running on linux btw no scam

  • lol 29.? on da time trial

  • Windows 7 might be good but it dont support that many online games and vista is quiet slower then windows xp i think windows xp its the best yet

  • Xp is not the best, since it doesn't look well and the interface is much less good than Ubuntu.

XP needs a virus scanner, linux virusses are only effective with the stupidest people (.. is wanting to format your hard drive, please enter your sudo password to continue)

If you type your password then, the virus will format your harddisk. In linux, downloaded files are default NOT executable, in windows any EXE file can be executed. Since the files aren't executable, it's very hard to make a virus.

  • "doesn't look well and the interface is much less good than Ubuntu." <- what does it mean? it's a matter of preference, to me windowsXP interface is much cleaner, simpler and more intuitive. about password's 'kdm' 'gdm' (login managers) must run as root, so what is the difference? you trust the developers that KDE or GNOME won't accidentaly delete your files, etc? also, windows is very stable and it's APPLICATIONS that crash on my PC. OS itself didn't crash even once on my pc....

  • ...i can't say that about linux. in debian, or ubuntu (can't remember), Xorg/kde sometimes restarts for no apparent reason, which is like a whole system crash (in case u would say KDE is not OS) because all my not saved stuff is lost etc. ext2/3 is very fast but in windows i haven't accidentaly deleted even 1 file, while on linux it happened to be several times

  • And windows 7 is even better. The interface is better than Ubuntu, or XP, and does not eat up the kind of power vista does. It runs like XP, and looks better. Because ExE files are not executable in Linux, it may prevent viruses, but it also means that most of your other programs that you know aren't viruses wont start without a VM or wine.

  • how can it have a better interface then ubuntu if ubuntu is fully customizable, being that it is Linux?

  • Man Linux is getting better and better every year.

Within a few years I would eventually be convinced to stop buying windows products.

I still think that windows XP is one of the greatest Operation systems though.

  • windows 7...its coming....

  • windows 7 is just a corrected version of windows vista. I like the taskbar, but same bullshit,

believe me I wish windows 7 would be better than xp , I would buy it.

  • You should try linux..

  • i dont know about that...switching....

  • aww...and i thought it was gonna rock

  • Ubuntu 9.10 is coming too!

  • YAYS :D

  • Try ubuntu 9.04 or wait for 9.10... You'll be amazed...

It just works and doesn't crash... Search for a dual boot option if you have a harddrive big enough to put 2 os on it

  • this proves nothing is unstoppable on mac and linux

    mac has bootcamp

    linux has wine

now the windows fan boys have nothing to compete with

  • there are no windows fan boys, there are only linux fan boys. what you mean is

    "mac users"

    "normal people"

"linux fanboys sitting in front of PC all day"

  • There are many Windows 7 fans, but linux users use their pc that often that it saves time to install a faster os. People who only use their pc like 1 hour a day, for them it doesn't really matter whether it's 1 hour or 1.5 hour.

For people who use their pc the whole day, it is really anoying how slow windows sometimes is.

For example, the great (free) 3d modeling software called blender runs 33% faster under Ubuntu then under windows vista. And ubuntu isn't even the fastest linux os.

  • wtf i don't see any difference when i run blender?? maybe u mean STARTUP time?? the speed of rendering depends on your hardware not os

  • Hey I got it to work, i saved it instead of opening the file. Do you know how i can make my cod 4 go windowed mode? And I was trying to dualboot vista and ubuntu but i somehow deleted the vista partition i don't know how, but now im just messing around with ubuntu and, in cod 4 i have to lower the settings to min to stop random colors from popping up and the screen going black, on vista I could run everything on max with high fps...

  • not rly, when i used ubuntu and played cod4 i had about 160fps, now on win7 i only got 63, so its more like linux got 90% higher FPS

  • hmmm.... strange

  • i thought it mostly had to do with hardware

    isn't windows 7 in beta?

also does anyone know if i install linux on a ps3 can i play pc games

  • you cant play games with linux on ps3 because there is no video drivers for it yet.

  • cod 4 gives me 40 fps on linux

    and 55 on win7

  • lol, ur gears is running 100%? cuz it it doesnt thats ur problem

  • Let me guess, you have compiz fusion on very nice settings? If so, this will require some part of the Graphics card too. It look nice, but it eats up your framerate...

Disable Compiz Fusion (cube and effects) and you'll see your framerate will maybe even be higher than under windows.

  • Naw, I was using a VM :P but i switched to virtual box and installed guest additions and got an awesome framerate on good settings, but ever since the windows 7 RC, i've had no intention of going back to linux.

  • @iron888888 Cool

  • @iron888888 lols actually no it isnt, vista failed horribly and even ubuntu 10.04 takes the same requirements as windows XP

  • @iron888888 Where did you got that from?! And indeed, Cool sarcasm!

  • @iron888888

nonononono. Windows is only neat coz of dx 11 . windowZ SUCKZ . Linux ROCKZ . I discovered that the hard way . been using linux for 5 years . An i Know ubuntu is way fckin better than windowZ

  • @coolnmv Dudeeeeee u have never used windows 7 cuz u never had money LOL XD

  • @iron888888 i use both and linux is better---

  • @iron888888 hey dumbass I got a massive desktop and Win 7 ? ya i own it and a 100 or more games and about 20 or more Operating systems . talks about money on youtube = not good . you talking to a software engineer who makes big bucks ass hole .

  • Why does it say Wine desktop at the top, how do i make it windowed???

  • because its running under wine... lol do u think Ubuntu natively supports Windows games???

  • By the way i download un-rar not winrar.

  • oh it doesn't work when i download it, it says " tmp/codmf16-dtn.rar could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." I have the rar thing working and everything???

  • Thanks so much for the fast reply, do you know how i can tell what version of wine i have. And how do i get into windowed mode?

  • I cant play singleplayer ,it says it cant read the CD (I have the original CD)

  • Crack it. Go to gamecopyworld, download the crack and paste it overwriting previous cod4sp.exe (i think) file... you probably know.

  • quake 3 engine is easy to implementation, for example loki created easy-way installer for mohaa, they convert aplication code into linux native.

  • what is the model number and brand for this computer and is it a Lappy McTop

  • Can you play online with Wine?

  • Yes, but punkbuster servers don't work (At least they didn't work when I made this video)

    Check the WineAppDB

  • does ubuntu take alot of space?

i'm going to install it and use DUAL boot with my windows 7 BETA :)

im using w7 for gaming and ubuntu for the rest, got 90 gig left space on my HDD :(

i also have a 250gig External HDD but i dont think its smart to install it on an External HDD.

just asking if its even worth trying ?

  • Nope

An Ubuntu install requires about 4 GB of hard drive space, I usually put it on a 10 GB partition (you can fit a lot of Linux software in 10 GBs) and use another partition for documents.

I think it's worth trying, but not everyone likes it.

I recommend you check out the Wubi installer.

The Wubi installer automatically sets up a dual-boot with Ubuntu and Windows, without any partitioning. And it's really easy to uninstall, just remove it from Add or Remove programs inside Windows.

  • Alright thanks a lot. I'll check that wubi thing out. Oh and ya it's cool to have someone reply for once :)

  • Hi, I dont want to sound like a noob, but ive been thinking of going with ubuntu instead of xp and I was just wondering can i play cod4 full screen without lag or complications.

    Thanks

  • You can play fullscreen, but Call of Duty 4 does run a little bit slower in Wine than in Windows and you may have to do a little tweaking to get it running decently on your system.

Honestly, if you're into gaming stick with Windows.

Linux has many advantages, but Windows is still the best for gaming. I'm really not much of a gamer anymore, and when I do play games it's usually on a console.

If you're interested in Linux, you might want to consider dual-booting.

    Google the "Wubi-installer"

  • U got window vista

  • lol OK

  • OooooKaaaaaaaaay...

  • Does it lag or is it the video?

  • WOW!

Cod4 can play on 256Mb of video :o

  • Lol COD4 is an easy game to max out

  • Yeah, COD4 isn't that demanding of a game

  • oh i thought u neded like fucking 512 Mb of video lol...

  • thats the RECOMENDED amount, and grpahics doesnt have much to do with video memory anyway

  • if you have problems with wine you can always install sun's virtual box. there are workarounds available on the internet to enable full or close to full 3d support. In Virtual box there is a mode called "seamless" that basically runs windows programs as if they were linux. it is pretty cool, you have a second control panel at the bottom that looks like the windows bar, from there you can lauch windows apps flawlessly. beware though, to play games you need alot of ram 1gb+

  • Woah 3d acceleration in virtualbox?

Could you please PM me a link to this?

    Thanks

  • Yes, there is but only 128 mb

  • yea i never head u could use 3d accel in virtual box.

does it work the other way around too?

ie could i use the cube effect in ubuntu in a windows host OS?

could u give me a link to what u mean?

    thanks!!

  • The latest version of Virtualbox now supports opengl 3d acceleration in Windows guests. Check out my new video

There's no directx support or support for non-windows guests, but that should be coming soon.

  • Oh i see.

  • Do you think CoD4 can run perfectly with Nvidia 8600GT with 2GB Crossfire RAM?

  • Under Wine or Windows?

Under Wine it won't run perfectly with any specs. It should run pretty good, though

  • from experiance. Games that run on wine with "platinum" compatibility. meaning everything works. Run better than normal, mostly because linux uses better memory management.

  • I think Call of Duty 4 was given "Gold"

Some of the more advanced graphical effects either don't work or make it unplayable.

I guess if you were running Vista on a low amount of RAM or something and had it bloated it up enough, Wine could run a program better than Windows. But everything I've used in Wine ran either about the same or sometimes slightly worse. I find that somewhat older games like Call of Duty 1 run about as fast as they do in Windows, but newer games tend to run a bit slower.

  • I love linux, but I will not lie about it. What you say is mostly true. Sometimes though there are things you can do to *tweak* the game to make it run faster, im not talking about downgrading graphics or anything. but once again, linux manages memory a hell of a lot better. I know cod4 is gold, but I was just making a comment on how platinum games run perfectly.

  • I agree, if a game isn't performing well there is almost always something you can tweak to improve performance.

It'd be interesting to do a Wine vs. Windows benchmark with platinum games. I might do that if I have the time

  • im sold to linux now!!!!

what settings and is wine an emulator is just an app that lets you run games. is that directx or open gl

  • Actually, Wine stands for: Wine Is Not an Emulator. It's more of a compatibility layer for the Windows API.

It is running on mostly low settings and I'll tell you right now, it doesn't run as good as it does in Windows. You'll have to do some tweaking to get the performance right.

You shouldn't want Linux just because it can run some Windows programs/games. If you come to Linux expecting a clone of Windows, you're going to be disappointed. You should want it for it's advantages and strengths

  • Thanks for that, ive just installed ubuntu 8.10 via wubi on my laptop, its awesome but i have no sound due to driver probs. I think ill stick to windows on my main system for gaming and until i get used to ubuntu. As for running windows programs i think a degree of compatibility is needed if linux is to grow as windows has vastly superior amounts of users.

  • What laptop do you have? I'm sure there's sound drivers somewhere. Have you tried going to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers from the top menu?

  • yeah ive got it working now, the only thing ubuntu has let me down on is HD video playing but that could just be my laptops crap x200m being the culprit. anyway ubuntu rocks.

  • Same thing here, i love linux, but even with wine, games just don't work right, like i played left for dead, and got a max fps of 10 compard to 30 on windows, PLUS it crashes alot, but for the non gammer linux is great.

  • what are the strengths of linux.the only thing good on windows is games .

  • it comes with almost everything u need, it is pretty fast, faster than windows is what i think. Nice effects and gui, i reccomend getting linuxmint ( what i have ) it comes with firefox, thunderbird, bittorrent client, giver, pidgeon, gimp, openoffice and some other things but not too much hdd space is required. And alot of games can work on linux with wine
