  • @seaofdeath that's true, maybe Vietnamese do best amoung others.

  • Whatever this song is translated to any languages, we just know its Donna Donna and the song is still sweet as ever. No need to blame... just enjoy how beautiful it is...

  • This song is better than the crappy american version. Besides, the english version sucks. So many renditions, but can never beat the original Yiddish song ^_^ nice, 10/10!

  • Nice Version..... ^_^

  • I like this version. I miss my childhood.

Minh cung la nguoi Vietnam, minh da nghe ca 2 ban,mot cua Phap va mot cua Vietnam nhung minh thich ban goc hon,don gian vi no hay hon va ca tu y ghia hon, dieu tat yeu la khi da dich sang tieng viet thi no chua truyen tai het duoc y nghia, minh nghi nhu vay!

  • this version has a totally different meaning than the original...the real donna donna talks about how Jews was slaughtered like calves by Nazi...the song is their struggle for freedom...totally different

  • @long882202 well it's hard to keep the original meaning when translating a song, isn't it? So now the song have a whole new meaning, but it is still very beautiful :)

  • i really like this version of the song. i sang the English version in choir.

can you point me in the right direction for the mp3 sight to get this song?

  • @Azriel2089 : it's a lil bit late, but google 5GJ4Q1GDxS, you'll see the 1st result from a site named nhaccua tui.com, then click [tai ve may] (if it asks for password, copy nhaccua tui.com and paste in both the 1st and 2nd blanks). There you go ;)

BTW do you know what are the instrument that made the sound from 2:22? I guess they are mandolin and flute but I'm not sure, but it's so beautiful!!!

  • I really like this version of the song, but I also Love the original . When you don't understand yiddish you can Listen to the english version, its very Close to the original.

  • Amazing. No matter what language is sung on, the beauty remains the same.

  • lagu tu sigi manah, taja dalam versi Vietnam, laut, cina, portugal, belgian, russian, irish, spanish, mandarin, dayak serta semua bangsa di dunia, nama kebuah laban lagu sigi manah, mesti meh iya manah dalam semua jako. "what i'm trying to say is this song is fabulous and superb, hence, no matter what version it is sing in, as long as the medody is still intact, the product is perfect.

  • i like so much this song

  • i'm miss my childhood very much

  • Mái nhà xưa yêu dấu, bức tường rêu phong cũ Nơi câu bé qua những ngày thơ ấu Muốn mình mau khôn lớn, giữa lụa là yêm ấm Em ngồi ước mơ bước chân giang hồ Mơ bay theo cánh chim ngang trời Biển xa núi chơi vơi Mơ bay đi khác khao cuộc tình Một đêm nhớ tiếng ai ru hời Dona dona ngủ đi nhé Ngoài trời đường nhiều gió tuyết rơi Dona dona ngủ đi nhé Hãy nằm trong cánh tay của mẹ

  • thank you verry much

  • You are welcome :-)

  • donna donna donna

  • The saddest version of this song 4 me is "Tiec Thuong".Every times I listen to that version I miss my no longer brother!

  • yes it's beautiful, but where is the original jewish version?

  • You can search for "Chava Alberstein - Dona Dona" to find the Yiddish version. Enjoy!

  • dolce e bella, il ricordo di questa canzone mi riporta agli anni in cui avevo i pugni in tasca e camminavo on the road again.

  • hjx to thich bai english hon. ( love english version)

  • Bai hat buon. Tam ca hat rat hay !!!

  • This a very interesting and unheard version ... but it's very good

  • My skin just melted off my body. It's so amazing... Of all there versions of this song...this is by far the best and most beautiful

  • may chi tam ca hat hay that day:D

  • this version is very beautiful..

  • Donna Donna brings me back to my childhood in Central Vietnam! All versions are sad though different meanings. This version in Vietnamese is about a man returns home and sits at a mossy door step and remembering his childhood with his mother, he cries and all memoirs returns...This is new version and especially with Tam Ca band.

Love it so much! Tks for posting.

  • I love listening to something nice but I dont know the meaning, that's really relaxing.

Comment wars r bullsh*t. Stop those conversations and start listening.

  • I'm understand this version,Because i know a little bit about taliking in Vietnam

  • I like how this version is nice and clear sounding, the sound quality in the video is also great. Thanks.

By the way, I just wanted to say, to anyone reading, these comment wars on Youtube are getting kind of old and disappointing. Just state your opinions nicely and move on... although educated debates are still nice.

  • ^.^ I love this version!!

  • This version is translated from the french version. That's why the french version is so funny and ridiculous too. However, you'll nerver understand what this version's meaning. Because you're not vietnamese.

  • hahaha, you said you know Vietnamese well and you never came to understand what this version's meaning ..... so stupid you are

  • well, this version is about flashback of a man who comes back to his hometown after many years. He feels like he misses his mother's love. That's all.

It's not so strange when each version have different meanings.

  • If you know Vietnamese then tell me the meaning of "Làm dơ bẩn tiếng Việt rồi đấy!"

You think you know Vietnamese so you can say that?

  • @seaofdeath: But the original version is really from the Jews.

  • @Norah137 I'm Vietnamese and i prefer this song in french version to english version. This song is translated by Trần Tiến and be performed by Tam ca áo trắng band. This song has 2 versions in vietnamese, so the one that you have criticized is the another one, i agree with you. How comes such a great song with sense about life could turned into ridiculous love with stupid lyrics, even though I'm a vietnamese but fell ashamed for composer

  • this song is completely translated from French version, such a beautiful song. I have cried many times and really enjoy this song

  • This original song is Yiddish theater song, most popular in English version and French version, both versions are different in lyrics but with same meaning about life but not totally matched, English version is about a calf with desire of freedom, and French version is about a man, when he was a child want to be an adult quickly and pursue dreams, but when experienced many difficulties which empty hand left over, suddenly think about childhood in cuddle hands of mom, he cried. just like i cried

  • @noumercy The yiddish/English versions are in relation to the Holocaust. "Calves are easily bound and slaughtered; never knowing the reason why".

  • great version""

    thanks for sharing

  • I love Donna Donna very much!

  • To answer boobytrapzap - this song is not about Holocaust. It first appeared as part of a Yiddish Theater in NY in 1930s before Holocaust really started. I guess you can say that it is an eerie premonition...

  • not really simon, it was written in 1941, when some of the holocast was definitely known if not the sheer scale of it.

  • "Dana Dana", the original Yiddish song was for the theater piece "Esterke" (1940/41). The text was written by Aaron Zeitlin (1889-1973), and the music was written by Sholom Secunda (1894-1974). Both of them are Jewish and the song was written in the time of the Nazis.

  • I really like it?

  • lovely version; thanks for sharing

  • harika... (great)

  • it is fantastic. Thanks for posting.

  • interesting version...

    Bernhard.

  • Nice. Interesting to hear Donavan exposed to this american vietnameese musically traditional mix of styles.

  • toi cung giong ban, nghe ban nhac lam toi rat thich

  • hehe my names donna :D

  • For those interested, this song is a reference to the Holocaust, wirtten in the 1940's in Yiddish. Interesting that it should be sung in VN. The words:

  • Hi! i didn't know that story...But where is the original ??...It's a beautiful oriental rythm ...

  • its a song by ITZCHAK KATSENELSON, from 1944m he was killed in Auschwitz

  • Oyfn furl ligt dos kelbl,

    Ligt gebundn mit a shtrik,

Hoykh in himl flit dos shvelbl,

Freyt zikh, dreyt zikh hin un krik.

Chorus: Lakht der vint in korn, Lakht un lakht un lakht, Lakht er op a tog a gantsn Mit a halber nakht. Dona, dona, dona, dona...

  • Shrayt dos kelbl, zogt der poyer:

Ver zhe heyst dikh zayn a kalb?

Volst gekert tsu zayn a foygl,

Volst gekert tsu zayn a shvalb.

    (chorus)

    Bidne kelber tut men bindn

Un men shlept zey un men shekht,

    Ver s'hot fligl, flit aroyftsu,

iz bay keynem nit keyn knekht.

    (chorus)

  • suppose almost no one understands yiddish ... could you give us a translation please?

  • on a wagon bound for market there's a calf with a mournful eye high above him there's a swallow winging swiftly through the sky chorus: how the winds are laughing they laugh with all their might laugh and laugh the whole day through and half a summer's night dona dona etc. Stop complaining said the farmer Who told you a calf to be? Why don't you have wings to fly with like the swallow so proud and free
  • dona dona winds etc.

Calves are easily bound and slaughtered

    Never knowing the reason why

    But whoever treasures freedom

Like the swallow must learn to fly

    dona winds etc.

it sounds gruesome, but since it is a song about the holocaust that ought to be a given.

  • does Donna means"woman"?

  • donna is god on Yiddish

  • donna is a face of a donna river along the way to the gas room.

  • this song makes me cry....

  • Sounds like Nhu Quynh...

  • Are you aware that the original language of this song is YIDDISH, the language of most of European Jews. This song was something of an anthem to the Jewish people and gave them much hope and comfort. I like this, but the original Yiddish version is by far the best!

  • Yeah you are right, every song sounds the best in its original language, but the words of this song are beautiful in any version.

Except,I assume you didnt hear the Croatian version of it,its the vorst version ever, its the best in Yiddish

  • nice song, I hardly listen to Vietnamese, but have to admitt the lyric is beautiful

  • this is a beautiful music, nice photo. The singer's voices are lovely as well. the meaning of this song is more close to the French version. I love those birds...

  • Bac Tran Tien dich hay qua!

"Bay theo canh chim ngang troi"

  • hmm, 3 versions with 3 different meanings: English,Français and Vietnamese, but Vietnamese one has closer meaning to French one. Anyway, all of them are nice.

  • love it in every language!

Original written in Yiddish for the show Isterke in 1940.

Became something of an anthem for the persecuted Jews in Europe during WWII.

  • LOVELY ! In any language !

    Donna

  • listen do donovan's version, it is also very good

  • @ sumire707: this song is singing by a vietnamese band named "Tam ca áo trắng" (three singers)

  • Joan Baez version is far more better..

  • Can somebody tell me who's the singer of this beautiful song?

  • so peaceful..........

  • I like this version much better than Joan Baez's. But i still think that the most beautiful version by far is the klezmer version sung in Yiddish (i think.)

  • This sounds like bad Lennon Sisters/Bannanrama

Baez's version on her debut lp remains un challenged.

  • I prefer Joan Baez singing it, but it's a great song anyway!

  • yeh way better then english version lol, its strange cause i relate so well with this song, i am seeing a chick name Donna too lol

    mara235: thank you :)

  • hi Seaofdeath: this song is beautiful. I have to agree that Vietnamese and French is more better than English with better meaning. I have heard this song many years ago when I was a child in VN. At one point I sang this song when I was in H.S. Now i have a chance to listen to it again. why dont seaofdeath post your... photos. I am curios, you guys have such a beautiful voice. Are you guys playing anywhere? what state are you in?

  • @lyndylilly: i agree with you.

such a nice song, from music to lyric.

i wonder that the song were originally written in francais or english. this vietnamese version is wtn by Mr. Tran tien, & the artist is Tam CA Ao Trang :D
