About the explosion, I think that the thermite consumes the oxygen contained in the water (water's chemical formula is H2O), leaving hydrogen alone. And since hydrogen is a highly unstable gas, due to the heat emitted by the thermite, it goes BOOM =)
What's so surprising? The lava-ish bucket content flows over the ice (best visible in infrared), causing the ice (=water) to vaporize and because it's covered in molten thermite the steam cannot expand.. boom! More or less the same what happens on/in volcano islands
its exaclty the same as when you have molten steel, around 1600°c or 2900ºF, and get water into it... for example, a little piece of ice comes in contact with the steel, it instantly melt and expand 1000 times!
and there´s your explosion.. 1kg of ice becomes 1 square meter (10 square feet) of steam INSTANTLY = BOOM
Looks like a typical phreatic explosion to me. The high temperature thermite so quickly vaporizes the ice that it just explodes. Same happens in volcanoes when magma comes into contact with ground water or surface ice. Pretty typical in places like Iceland as magma rises. Thermite is as hot as molten magma. Might not be the same as magnesium and water because there is no chemical reaction with iron as there would be with magnesium. I believe it is simply a phreatic explosion.
Maybe the Ice just sublimates instantly like you blow water in burning oil, so that the expanding water rises of the burning thermite. This was my first idea ...
It could simply be from a rapid temperature change in the bucket itself. Metal conducts thermal energy readily, therefore, it can be assumed that the temperature of the metal in the bucket was near that of ice. When the temperature of the bucket was suddenly increased to the temperature of the Thermite reaction, it suddenly expands, and probably also melts. This is why no bucket was found... it was splattered as bits of liquid metal rapidly expanding outward.
I realy want to do this experiment right now I have a video of a planting pot full of thermite eventualy im going to put thermite and ice on my channel
It burns so hot it creates a molacular separation of the hydrogen and oxygen that water is composed of. Take and light magnesium on fire and pour water on it, similar reaction
Steam is aresolizing the thermite, or we have the decomposition of
2 H20 --> 2 H2 + O2, and the hydrogen gas produced causes an explosion. Be it that thermite burns at over twice the temparture required to decompose water, it is possible.
My theory is as follows: Thermite veryveryvery hot. Water boils att 100°C. So what happens is instant boiling of the water. Try for example (or rather, look it up here on YT) to put out burning oil with water. Thermite is way hotter than burning oil.
given the high temperature of thermite and tremendous pressure of water vapor, I would say it is steam generated by the heat quickly enough to create enough pressure to blast it apart.
The ice just instantaneously vaporised into a gas when it was exposed to the heat from the thermite, there was no hydrogen or oxygen decomposition or anything. I am surprised at you, Jamie.
You do not require explosives or hydrogen to make an explosion. Any explosion is just rapidly expanding gas. How fast do you think water vapor will expand when water is rapidly subjected to 3000C? This is nothing but a steam explosion.
Thermite burns hot enough to cut structural steel like butter. That's what brought down the World Trade Center buildings. They (firefighters and search volunteers) found molten steel at the base of the rubble several days after the "terrorist attack"
If you drop an ice cude into really hot water or tea or something, the ice cube will also explode, packs a pretty mean punch also compared to what you would think

Ice cracks when warmed quickly. So I am thinking that with how much heat hit the ice it shattered so quickly it exploded the thermite everywhere!

Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3.
H2O decomposes at 2500°C.
Thermite generates heat in the 2500°C to 2800°C range.
Aluminium has a high affinity for Oxygen.
Could enough H2O even have decomposed to generate the explosion?
I would assume that if the thermite was being aerosolized, the result would look more like the Mythbusters sawdust cannon.

Or as a simple explanation, the thermite burns its way to the center of the ice stack, turning the insides into steam which creates a huge pressure.
