To me it's one of my favourite games ever. I still like to come back to it from time to time. Many people say it's dumbed down hack & slash. To me story is epic and consuming. Maybe I'm just nostalgic...
Anybody made the same mistake of not having a mage in the group when playing for the first time? :) I thought a would get on with priest and druid :D I did in the end but it cost me headaches, loads of re-loading and feeling of depression when I couldn´t kill the trolls :D
I remember when i played this game 4 the first time.. i was about 15. My dad decided to painting over the house, so my room was a mess. I WANTED to play this game, so somehow turned on the PC! The kids and the squirrel.. the tavern lady and her afraid of spiders.. great times!

Icewind Dale to mój pierwszy RPG, melodia w Easthavan i Kuldahar była genialna, taka klimatyczna... Ta gra miała w sobie to COŚ. Muszę znowu sobie wkrotce w to pograć ;)
Even after much time passing, these vids of icewind Dale and the game it self are masterpieces. Long live Jeremy soul and the creators of icewind Dale.
I'll admit Icewind Dale wasn't one of my favorite games of all time, IWD2 was the better game in my opinion with of course Baldurs Gate topping all of them. But what kept me going was wanting to hear this soundtack. There was times I didn't want to play but I would just put it on so I could listen to the music. Kind of like Basil Poledouris will always be remembered for the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack. Jeremy Soule will always be remembered for this being his most epic piece of work!
with good imagination Icewind Dale 1, 2 may be the best cRPG games ever !!! I always make up my own dialogues and stories between my party in my mind :D maybe they should put me in asylum but I don't care :D

Play it again with custom NPC's, the difference from your own made npc, is that they got voice and they actually talk to you and eachother. also play it on heart of fury mode, that way it will last 30 real life days to play if your character is level 1 ;)
you get both a challange since you already played it, AND you get more content to enjoy the experience once again.

This theme is breathtakingly beautiful!!! Like something one of the great master composers would have written!
old. maybe. old graphics? maybe. but this game is something more ...not game. it is a ICEWIND DALE, and icewind dale iwill be forever in our Hearts....
I played it 8 years ago, too. this was my favourite game but my cd was too destroyed after a long time. I bought a new one yesterday^^ i love this game
OMG from the first day I played this game (which was 8 years ago I think) this song never went out of my mind. The IWD series will always have a place in my heart. The best RPG game I have ever played. Nothing can be compared to it, and I think nothing will ever be as great as it
In Poland there is something like Extra Klasyka (Extra classic) its series of classic games in low prices ... All Icewind Dales with expansions costs 27 zł (zloty) its about 8 $ in pounds it will be about 5,5 :) Same with Baldurs Gate
Games like Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate, Torment, Might and Magic will always be fondly remembered by gamers that value story more than polygon count. I wish I had IWD now to play...
Yea I think the advent of 3d graphics runined the game industry. They stopped trying to impress us with story lines and depth and scope. Instead they started telling us that poly counts and lighting were way more important than a trivial thing like gameplay. I use Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 as my examples.
I would be inclined to agree, except that bioware still does great games. Knights of the old republic was awesome, as was mass effect. Dragon age is likely going to be, as well. Also, the expansion pack for nwn 2, mask of the betrayer, was actually quite good.
Yea I agree KOTOR was a nice game but it still suffered from the clinical tile and block based graphics that happen today. In IWD or BG1&2 a building was individual, no two areas were the same, sure they used a few stock layouts but they made the effort. The towns in modern games are the same 5 house models repeated over and over. The dungeons are just tile after tile of frustratingly dull grey boring repetetive nonsense. The same damn puzzles repeated over and over with no variation.
IWD and games like it had heart and soul, they drew you in and consumed you leaving no room for any criticism. When you sat down to play it you felt like you were experiencing something not just mashing buttons. Everything had to be planned and carefully choreographed or you'd fail. You came to love your characters and even empathise with them. There was a golden age of gaming and we've lost it. Nowadays 90% of games are the same old rubbish, recycled, reused and re-tarded.
I don't know about you, but I will always play old games and even though I have a PS3 and an XBOX360 and a damn fine new PC, nothing I have played on any of them has touched every one of my senses and emotions the way the games of the past did. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna power up my N64 and rock some Ocarina Of Time.
Me, too. Just played through BG2 with a self made party of 4. I'm also going through planescape: torment and was thinking of starting arcanum all over again : )
Man blackisle and wizard were the greatest, NWN 2 is good.. but it just lacks the flair in storytelling and atmosphere like the old IWD and BG games, those games are icons.

...AND it was a great game. One of the first pc rpgs I have played...
So peaceful ^_^ Icewind Dale was my favorite RPG next to BG1... I think my favorite villian in the game was Presio, that one snake-mage lady who kept summoning those zombies ;P (and no I don't mean the demon lady with the scimitars and yuan-ti >.>)
To me it's one of my favourite games ever. I still like to come back to it from time to time. Many people say it's dumbed down hack & slash. To me story is epic and consuming. Maybe I'm just nostalgic...

Because BI > Bioware.
Neither Dragon Age, nor Neverwinter Nights or even Baldur's Gate could possible face awesomness of games like Planescape Torment or Fallout.
Icewind Dale felt also much more entertaining than Baldur's Gate series, because gameplay was not omitted that hard.

Truly, this makes Nobue Uematsu shiver in his boots... IWD had the greatest soundtrack ever, and it is even a great piece of music as such, beyond the boundaries of video game music.
...AND it was a great game. One of the first pc rpgs I have played...

Yeah, a very good game, though the Baldur's gate series is the king of the pc rpg:s. :)

So peaceful ^_^ Icewind Dale was my favorite RPG next to BG1... I think my favorite villian in the game was Presio, that one snake-mage lady who kept summoning those zombies ;P (and no I don't mean the demon lady with the scimitars and yuan-ti >.>)
