As filmriot diy kits are targeted at very Indie filmmakers I and they use household light rather than film lights perhaps I immediately thought of household Flouro lights, which do look cap on film... I don't know....

You are not funny, there is WAY too much advertisement,

you present assembling a trivial lamp as if it was the most difficult thing in the world.

Building the dimmer is something else then mounting a ready made dimmer in a box.

Not a single word about what devices are dimmable.

(Huge topic with fluorescent lights that are replacing conventional lightbulps all over the place.)

The fact that it is easy means it's an even better lighting solution than one that is complicated.

Mounting a ready made dimmer in a box is still cheaper than getting an electrician to do it, and Ryan did tell us how to make it.

There are too many devices on this planet to say which ones are dimmable and which ones are not.

Flourescent lights are crap for film.

@thegreentimtam So not true! Fluorescents are used for feature films every day. They are called KINO FLUORESCENT LIGHTS! We use them on the set of every film I've worked on. It's not the lights you use that is the problem, it's the way they are used. Fluorescents are great for film, along with LED lights also.

We have one for all the other driving parts but obviously we can't roll the real one so we were going to do it in miniature. Hey thanks for putting in the China Ball and Dimmer tips. Its exactly what I was looking for for my own films. My last film I used Work Lights and hung white trash bags in front of them to give me a semi decent fill light and used a Daylight bulb to bring highlights in certain scenes.

I experimented with adding dimmers to some homebrew lighting applications, but I found that the dimmer I was using didn't allow the lights to get as fully bright without the dimmer, even when turned on to full. I wound up ditching the dimmer and experimenting with other methods of diffusion instead. It's still a great tutorial you gave though because I'm sure someone will find a great application for it.
