Its probably recorded straight to his computer. I dont own an electric guitar so Im not really sure, but I think there are tools which let you record it straight. The backtrack is probably overlayed after.

if you own a multieffekt pedal like POD xt live, you can buy a programm from line6 and than you can record your guitar directly from your computer because the sound goes to the POD and then to the Computer by a USB-adapter...

the recorded sound sounds like in this video very good.
