No obviously not, but I found it when playing Okaar world (which is the last world I complete). So I would have to start a complete new run (and differente route) to take full advantage of this Okaar glitch.
Maybe I'll have free time at the end of the week and if so I'll try to do the entire run again. I think I could save 5-10 more minutes with an optimal route and with the help of a few others glitches I found.
Whoa! You just made me realize something... You're right: eventually it won't matter how fast you play anymore, because the event quests triggers always take their minimum time.
So it becomes pertinent that you get the first Mon as soon as possible (Okaar, via the Fae temple Daoka, using your wall trick), and that you do the event quests immediately when they come up and fast (here's where 5 F-links come in handy).
yeah getting Okaar Mon first is a very good idea, unfortunately I didn't do that in my run because I found Okaar bug too late :(
Anyway you'll give your thoughts about the quality of my run (if you verify) and even though it isn't 100% optimized it can be accepted and maybe improved one day by another runner
Don't get me wrong, I don't expect your run to be perfect. I couldn't do it any better even if my life depended on it. I have extensive knowledge of the game, but I suck at playing fast. That's why I'm more interested in the planning.
I think theoretically it could be done under an hour, but it would have to be played by a robot that has 100% accuracy and can predict the consequences of every action.
What the hell... I responded to the Outcast thread (like you asked me to), and I got a reply saying I can't verify now, because I said I want to verify...
Just for fun, this would be my critique of the Ranzaar level
(aside from it being excellent):
You should jump to cut the corners of the stairs, and dive in the water later. This should buy you enough time to collect the money from the vases. At the end you waste 3 seconds, and consequently you arrive at the Daoka 3 seconds too late. As if this game was made to speedrun. :-D
Obviously I don't expect you to redo your run for this. ;-)
The thing is, on a modern PC you slow down extremely, but when I played it back in 1999 you would slow down a little bit in water, like you would in real life, and this was intentional.
So if your Cutter is as fast in water as he is on land, you're not exactly playing the original game.
To me this is just nitpicking, but I don't know how strict the guys at SDA are about this.
It seems that you know well the game and you're interested in speedruns (we found the same bugs!), maybe you could could verify for my run on speeddemosarchives ?
If it takes too long I'll upload it on youtube but the 10 minutes limitation is quite restrictive, I'll have to split the whole video in 12 parts...
I also found the Okaar bug by myself about a year ago. Never told anyone about it. I also use it to "climb" over the walls of the barack.
Played Outcast again today to test some things. Man, that run must've been some tour de force. Every little decision affects the entire game. 1h18min is really impressive.
I've got about a million questions about your run, but instead of asking them I'd like to encourage you again to upload it on Youtube (also), so I can discover the answers myself. :-)
Dunno how the verification is going.... but why don't you upload it on YouTube? You'll get a much bigger audience here.
I've been obsessed with speedrunning Outcast for a while... not so much the execution, but the planning. I'm sure I can give you a few tips to shave off some extra minutes (if only I could see your speedrun).
I bet the key to a succesful speedrun is the tactical use of F-links (teleportation devices). You can have 5 in total; 2 of them you can buy from a merchant.
Also... did you use the exploit where you can get the Mon in Okaar (forrest region) directly without any keys, using the F-link?

I'll contact you if so !

Wait a minute... (I suspect a typo here)
Are you saying you did the entire Okaar Mon quest in that 1h18m run?!

I'll PM the SDA admin again, but I don't expect a reaction any time soon.
How about we continue this converstion on the SDA forum?

Yeah, I'm still not sure what exactly triggers those event quests.
Getting a Mon and switching worlds is part of it, but there's also some rondom timed factor to it.
But in the end you can use the "wasted" time to get a big weapon and set out the route from Ranzaar to Okaar with F-links.
I'm wondering, in what order did you get the Mons? If you did Okasankaar last, you've indeed got a problem with the event quests.

Actually I don' thinkt it's possible to beat 1hour because of marion cinematics which requires several minutes delay from the previous one to trigger

???
Fuck 'em.
ioncloud2012 2 years ago
OK, I volunteered for verification at SDA. Now I'll just have to wait for more verifiers, I guess.
If they ever come, that is... :-(
ioncloud2012 2 years ago
Alrighty then! I'm going to register at SDA asap.

Yeah the ranzaar part isn't perfect (like the overall run) but those are very small mistakes and I accepted the minors ones.
BTW this isn't the real first part of my run, I "re-did" it for capture purposes (I didn't use Fraps for this video)

Sorry I meant you're not too much slowed (jsut a little bit , looks like realistic)

It's a segmented run and I used FRAPS to capture at 30 fps so that Cutter doesn't slow (it fixes others speed bugs too).
My pseudo is the same on Speeddemosarchives, use the appropriate topic in PC games section if you wanna verify.
87 parts playthrough? that must be loooong ^^ i think you'll prefer my run!
atomicJo42 2 years ago
Sound like fun, I'll check out that site.
I was wondering, since your run will be a montage of savegames (or else you really are a God), it's technically a TAS, right?
And I assume you used a CPU grabber (so Cutter doesn't slow down in water), but won't that be considered cheating?
BTW, there's a longplay of Outcast on Youtube in 87 parts. ;-)

about F-Links : I used the 3 F-Links you find at the beginning of the game in Shamazaar. I didn't know you could buy 2 more ?!
about the bug in Okaar : yes I did, but I found it by myself, didn't know it had been found already
About uploading it on Youtube, I'm considering it cause it seems like it takes forever to verify (not enough people knowing the game I guess)
And yeah all the difficulty of this run is about route planning, more than execution.
