YES! right on dude! finally I hear a decent criticism on this film. I like the fact that you saw what was deep inside this movie. And I agree with you when you say that you can hate the characters in a movie, but you can ablosulutely love the movie.
you've hit the proverbial nail on the head, sir! this film is dark, nihilistic and doesn't adhere to any sort of linear plot... just like the book. i really loved it, but i'm an ellis advocate so i'm biased. :-P
I presume that you finished the book by now so I was wondering if your opinion has changed on the film. I am pretty pissed because I still have not been able to see the film. Fans seem split on it though.
yes, I did finish the book and I enjoyed it quite a bit!!! My opinion on the film hasn't changed at all, I still think that the film is pretty solid...there's definitely some stuff left out (actually my favorite short stories "Letters From LA" and the vampire one aren't there) but it's still definitely good.
I wouldn't say bored...maybe repetitious? But that's how the novel felt to me as well so it worked for me...I really liked the concept that the conclusion is that there is no conclusion since these characters will just keep on living their lives the way they are.
Yea, I Think the way the book ends is very real. It kinda makes you question some things like your own morals. And much like real life it kinda leaves you hanging with no real answers. Sounds to me like it hit the mark perfectly though... Just needed some more scenes. I think that they are going to release the dvd with a lot more scenes.
It is so refreshing to have it said that people should not expect to like a character. The same can be said of people who express disbelief at an ambivalent ending: "I can't believe they didn't get married? That film sucked" or "That ending was so abrupt. They needed a real editor". Fools!
I thought this was a great review for a number of reasons: you're thoughtful, you're familiar with Ellis' novels and you actually quoted from 'The Informers'. Keep it up.
WOW! i love your review. I was thinking the exact same things while reading Rotten Tomatoes. I have not seen the movie yet, but have read the book, and when i heard so many terrible reviews, for the same reasons (that they're terrible people, doing terrible things), I thought to myself "have they even read the book?" Let alone, understood the theme of it. Great review, keep up the great work.
I read the book a few months ago after seeing the trailer. I read a lot of books but something about The Informers and Less then Zero.... they leave you with this empty feeling after reading them that I think only Bret's books can do. I have really high hopes for the movie though.. I knew there would be some bad reviews from lack on understanding of some people but is it a Bad film or are people just not getting it. Btw glad 2 see palahniuk is ur favorite writer he is mine 2
I saw this movie today as well. (along with Tyson) I'll admit that I was a bit pissed at the movie for not doing more. At the end of the movie I just thought : "so what?". While I enjoyed parts I felt the over all message was weak if any.
I do agree with you on those people that dislike a movie just because they didn't like any of the characters in that movie.
my friend told me his thoughts after he saw it too and follow it with, "sorry I sounded like an artsy douchebag just then" but he said: "if you think that the conclusion is that there's no conclusion then it's pretty cool."
I think that what the film is saying is that these terrible people are always going to be terrible and that'll never end...therefore, there'll never be a conclusion. that being said, I'm in Ch.5 of the book and loving it. haha
I wonder if the problems with the movie stem from the fact that they are using a book which - like all Ellis' novels - are intentionally superficial, deferring depth and meaning to a great affect rather than scene. Of course, it's easier to bombard a reader with repetitive scenes in a novel (like 'Less Than Zero' as well as 'The Informers) than in a film. I don't know if I want to see it anymore.
Rotten Tomatoes sucks dick

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it portrayed the film very well. Brett Easton Ellis is great ;).

why wouldnt you like any of the characters?
i felt tim in chapter 4 of the book was closely related to what kinda person i am, i thought it was all awesome anyway :P

they're just not likable people, which is fine. i think the book paints a few characters as a little more likable than the film does.
