130,000 first place winnings...."its the richest poker championship that vegas has ever seen" LOL. wow the value of the $ has gone down in just a short 38 years!
this moron calls a legend like johnny moss (the original rounder who´ve been around at the poker circuit for his whole life) a hardcore gambler whit problems and gets thumbs up?
Rofl.. can we play sometime my full tilt poker name is burto8183 =]
And yep
I found on the Full Tilt blog recently you can create an new account on their site and use the promo code AMERICAS you can't have a full tilt poker account yet though, this is for for people w/o a account. It's a great promotional deal. They will double your initial deposit plus multiple other beneficial perks. It's only going work for the first 3000 people that register using it
It would be interesting what Johnny M. would have said, when someone would have told him that hundred tousand of peoples will play poker at home at their computers.
You just can´t compare the world of poker of 1973 with nowaday, it´s like the difference beetween day and night.
Poker was so different back then. Poker players were looked upon by hard core gamblers with problems, not as a way of life. It's definitely not a lottery now, I don't agree with the comment below mine. Poker has become more of a test of endurance and patience now-a-days. The pros are still there and still win a lot of tourneys, a lot of money, and a lot of bracelets. That's no lottery, that is skill and experience.
nowadays it is more of a lottery... too many people the guy below you is right, even phil hellmuth said it... 6000 thoasand people who all know how to play poker... you need luck mate simple as... in the 80s n 90s the same guy won because there was like 100 players and only 5 of them could play.... lol
@zalmi1 believe me its a lottery!! the fields are bbigger by like 6 thousand!! even the PROS say its a lottery .. i played in this year 2010 WSOP .. .BELIEEEVVEE me.. its a lottery!! have u even played a tournament?!

Indeed wikipedia says there were 13 players, and the winner took the whole 13.000. Numbers increased slowly, 1982 had 104 players, 1999 had 393. Then the numbers jumped to over 500. In 2003 when Moneymaker won, there were 839 players. Then poker boomed and 2004 had 2576 players, 2005 had 5619 and 2006 had an amazing 8773 players. It´s more of a lottery nowadays.
Just because it's more popular doesn't make it better. The control that ESPN and Harrahs has over poker is absurd. Delaying the final table four months is criminal. It is what it is, and that's a bad joke.
Those were the days when poker players were real outlaws. They lived by their own set of rules and eked out a living by sheer wits and guts. I knew Moss and Puggy and Stuey and just about all the rest. It was a wondrous time without all the corporate idiots that have ruined the texture and fabric of the real deal. ESPN should be ashamed of themselves for the intrusion on the action that they have incurred.
90% agreement from me. Only, ESPN has done so much good for poker, just look at how amazingly fast it has grown. Making superstars out of pokerplayers turned out great.
STFU! because of espn we have so many players playing poker. Because of espn we have 9million dollars for first place. because of espn poker is more of a gentlemen game. I remember those players use to bash the dealers for no reason. Poker was looked at like game meant for degenrates. Now because of ESPN Poker look like a great game to play and respected.
But also because of ESPN we have 10,000 donkeys every year in the WSOP and usually some supersticious asian who doesn't know how to fold a fucking hand goes on to win it all.
@pokerfinest but on the flip side everyone knows the game these days no longer as profitable . i think thats why theirs a big boom in PLO but it won't take long before the game is taken over .. oh well

$10000 buy in was a lot harder to come by in 1973 than it is now. You could almost buy three new cars for $10000 back then.
chupposity 2 years ago
it was 10 000$ buy in?
i think he siad that h won 130 000 $ for first place so i guess buy in was less than 10 000

I believe there were only 13 players and it was winner take all.

any internet poker player today would win that wsop with 13 players in it, lol. lets be real.
Poofyponcho 2 years ago
130,000 pot with 10,000 buy-in? Is that 13- 15 players? I'd say the standards were lower then, but Puggy Pearson is a legend.
