anyone know more about barrow? i was wondering if this is one of those places that doesnt get sun or doesnt get dark during periods throughout the year. also, what does it feel like when the weather is like -50 degrees? i dont mean as in "its really cold" but like is it a strange feel to the air or anything?
Lots of time i see a lot of bad things about barrow, its a really beutifull city especially in summer, but there are a couple of thngs you might want to know before you head there. Its an incredible small city. In the winter it drops to below 60 degrees celcius because its so northic, if you want to know how cold it ia there in winter imagine throwing a pot of boiling water outside in the air andnthat 3 secounds later the same water which was 3 secounds ago boiling hot now falls down in ice and
WOW - thank you for the tour. I graduated from Barrow HS in 1989 and I'm amazed by how much has changed downtown! The old Burger Barn is now a teryaki place? Very happy to see Pepe's still going strong LOL This tour brought back SO many memories. Thanks again for posting!
Barrow amazing! Alaska Airlines flies there! You can get from Barrow to Anchorage on flight in about an hour then hop on non stop flight to Honolulu Hawaii and be there in 5 hours....talk about two extreme climates!
There is no Walmart? Fred Meyers? Winco, Albertson's or Safeway there? No bugger king, McDonalds? no? Also how do all of you manage to live there with that kind of weather? Your cars don't freeze up? How do you manage to live there with all them polar bears? Do people become meals quite a lot or i guess each of has a gun right? I see you eat whales too....Texas would love to have some of that snow now and then...most of you cannot live in Texas...you would melt here...
@kanyaugatiejagwo at the time I lived there the way to keep your car from freezing up was plugging it in by electrical outlet at night, to provide heat. Notice that big crack in the windshield? Pretty much every car in town had one from the cold. No big fast food places - our classmates used to make *bank* when they went to Anchorage and came back with a cooler full of McDonalds cheeseburgers and apple pies LOL
i want to visit so bad, and would love to stay for an extended period of time just to experience the lifestyle. but i would miss fast food & it seems like there is no bar. i'm not an alcoholic, but i do like to go out from time to time!
Hey, Stella, is that you? My condolescenses for Eben...do you have TV up there? Don't you fear the vampires? You know, people from Barrow should sue those movie makers....
& just like @Unaliin0611 said Barrow is nothing like the 30 Days of Night movie. 30 days of night doesn't even exist here. the sun doesn't come up for a few weeks but it's not dark for that whole period of time.
@chrism614- we have local cell services; ASTAC, GCI, ACS.. AT&T works just fine also, we just don't have 3G or anything sweet like that. our surrounding villages have Edge though, and they're working on getting either 3G or Edge up here.
@MrReeg16 yes, it did get that dark. I lived up there in 1988-89 (the same year we had a massive blizzard and the grey whales got trapped) and it was pitch black at night save for all the ever-burning street lights. We never realize how much our bodies depend on sunlight to function until it's suddenly not there. I compensated with sessions at the local tanning salon and it made a world of difference.
So what time was that when you took the video? Its wierd that your town has a Mexican Resturant. So where does one go to see movies at like first run films? So do you get completely dark during 1 month out of the year?
we don't have any movie theaters here at all.. the Barrow High School Band used to use the auditorium at the high school to show movies. but they haven't done so in a while.
So what time was that video taken? So what do you do to prevent to keep from getting insane? How do you see first run movies and you don't have a theater?
i have no idea when this was taken.. it's not my video.. up here, we're able to go hunting pretty much ALLL year. alot of people live subsistently. if we're not hunting or at work/school we can walk around town or go for a fourwheeler ride in the summer or snowball fight, build snowmen/igloos, or go for a snowmachine ride in the winter.. we also have 4 eskimo dance groups here. we have to go out of town to watch first run movies
cool video looks like a good place to be bored unfortunetely but the girl driving the truck was cute might five me a good reason to visit all the way from ohio!
I want to pay this place a visit, i've just watched 30 days of night and its class! I thought Northern Ireland was cold, this place takes the fecking biscuit! Hope to see use all some day!
Nice tour. I've heard all the buildings in Barrow have to be built on stilts or they sink. Looks like some of them weren't unless the stilts were covered up.
@itsallgood20002 When I lived there, summer averaged about 40 to 45. Winter was coooold.! the coldest I remember was 80 below. BURRRRR. FYi, thats why I left.
@chazzman1547 TY for the info. I tried to explain to my Daughter what absolute zero would be like, and told her you can throw boiling water out the door and it would freeze before it hit ground, and it freaked her out lol
@NYANGELINA82 thanks for the comment. bad music = one unfortunate problem caused by YouTube muting anything copyrighted. so, ya gotta use what you can. it is what it is.
@NYANGELINA82 You're clearly out of your mind. I came here JUST for that music. It has a good beat, and we can dance to it. I give it a 92. I remember a local official at the time quipping "the only people who voluntarily come to Barrow are missionaries, mercenaries, and kooks." LOL

nolife45 2 years ago
yes it is true. The worst is 30+ days of night, with no sun at all and the most you just might get in mid December is a couple hours of a very faint twilight in the southern sky, just about enough to make out the southern horizon, unless there is cloud cover, then it's pitch dark at high noon.

I also forgot to say, in December and January, the brightest light from the sky you'll get in Barrow is an Aurora Borealis when the sky is clear.
