From what the Minecraft Wiki says, hostile mobs can spawn within 272 blocks of a player, meaning an area 575 blocks long and wide would need to be cleared down to bedrock and have some kind of mob-spawn preventing block placed on them to get max results. Again, this is if the wiki is correct.
@FIuffyRabbit Unfortunately, Mojang removed that effect in Beta 1.6. You can still get the same effevt in a 5 block wide channel but, not in a three. Bummer :(
@EpicRealms not exactly, if you put a stone half step where the glass would be i think it would still work, failing that you could always just the square empty and block off the water at the next floor, that would work fine :]
@EpicRealms What I'm doing with the water inside the tower is putting a bock in the middle of the 2 sources, and that keeps the water flowing towards the middle, while only losing 1 block. The other option is to have the water falling down by putting it up on the divider between the water pools, and the falling water it creates doesn't combine, so you can get the effect that way. It would have to replace 2 of the blocks you normally have in the divider though.
May i ask what is the point in these traps ? They are epic but they are created using mods where you could just spawn the items + there is no need for that much stuff ever! But still nicely.
@WxMLovatt It's all about the science of it. In a single player game, you'd be hard pressed to make use out of 500-1000 items/hr. In multiplayer, 2000-5000 items/hr is the most you could do without causing devastating lag when a player is in vicinity of the trap, even on the beefiest servers. It's just about the science, innovation, spectacle and seeing what Minecraft can actually do. I hope that helps wrap your head around it. If you've never stood beneath a 5000+ mob trap, I highly recommend it
@EpicRealms Since mobs spawn in a 144x144 area around the player excluding a 24 block area, build a giant 144x144 tower with the 24 area cut out in the middle.
@EpicRealms If you have just a 2x2 channel, do the spiders actually try to climb out? don't they just go with the flow unless they have their phazers set to a player?
@TheBigNegus Spiders are just mob trap kryptonite. Yes they will crawl right out of a channel once they're in. Mobs kind of have that wandering pattern they do. while other mobs get stuck in the channel spiders can crawl right back out. The inward currents helped keep the spiders away from the walls but, alas they took that water pattern out of the game :(
@EpicRealms In mines, which give me only probably like a hundred IPH (Items Per Hour) To kill them, I just only used 1 cobble and 1 sticky piston because spiders are 2x2 big so it would crush them instead of the old fashion way for me, shooting them with arrows.
@lunboks the signs are to stop the water flow at 7 blocks. when you place a block of water on each corner of the channel the water flows toward the center (only on glass or ice surface). This keeps the spiders moving toward the cactus instead of crawling up the walls and into the lava.
@lunboks If the channel was eight blocks long the middle row would not reach the end. He is only using two sources as said in vid (though I don't know how he keeps them from forming a new source block)
@LeviJones9000 You got it! Water behaves differently on top of glass or ice blocks, on any other block the 2 sources would make 3 but, on glass or in this case ice, they remain two sources and flow inward toward each other :)
@fenderbend They're placed on a wall and then onto the signs placed on a wall and then onto the signs placed on the signs placed on the wall. Not just in mid air like it seems.
This is insane. Between the hilarity of this video, my habitually low resource counts, and the sheer infuriation that Creepers and Skeletons give me, I am inspired to try and make my own mob eating tower. Brilliant, sir, brilliant.
@omega157 if you look at about 2:20 you will se that the cactus is on the other side, not where mobs come from, its mostly used to finish of spiders since they dont get killed by lava.
so the only item that will be lost is string and that is most likely not even going to happen because of the placement of the cactus :)
@omega157 The way I have it set up, hardly any items get eaten by the cactus. The water on the sides of the cactus pushes the drops down before they can hit it.
lol myspace...no body uses that anymore

I built a trap before that gave me about 7,500 items an hour but a creeper got out and blew a hole in the wall and that was the end of that

@ssjhamtaro Yep, this trap was made before 1.5. It used to be 144 blocks.

@EpicRealms Figures. I wondered why I could do it in a 5 channel but not a 3. Looks like my trap is going to take more space than intended.

@3DKing We did it on our server (something like 1 week of work) and we have +- 2000 items/hour, without lighting the outside nor in the caves.
Realy, it is awesome, thanks guy.

@EpicRealms You can still create an inward pattern with 4x7 (one in each corner), just more of a waste of space >_>

Yeah, not bad, but in case efficiency you are far behind BioFactory.
A 40k/h here: watch?v=OTvD1i6Vrik
And has now a trap which produces 72k/h.
Not bad through.

What is going on with those floating signs there?
Wouldn't it have been easier just to design those flows to be 3x8 instead of 3x7?

Does the cactus not touch the items? Items that touch cactus are instantly destroyed, and that would lower your output significantly.
