I dunno; Braxton was pretty psychotic. Ransom might be more immoral but I don't think Braxton deserves to be below Ransom. He wasn't crazy; he was just desperate. Braxton was legally insane and tried to kill everyone on a ship over five hundred years in the past. That's pretty psycho.
I had no problem with Jellico. He reminded me of my first CO when I was in the Navy. Very military minded and a micromanager but ultimately a very capable commanding officer.
Useless (but hopefully somewhat interesting trivia). The role of Decker was originally to be played by Robert Ryan, who had a scheduling conflict or some such. From what I've read, he was going to play the character with much less sympathy and personal guilt/grief of the loss of his crew, and much more like a Jelico type, with the added bonus of an Ahab-type revenge complex.
Now I like to think, that the last thing going through Captain Maxwell's mind (other than that phaser set to kill), was to wonder how the hell Andy Dufresne got the best of him.
Rudolph Ransom was not "crazy", he was desperate to get out of the Delta Quadrant. Janeway, meanwhile, became bloodthirsty, blew the guy's ship up and killed their crew when they might've been able to beam an away team onto their ship. And besides: His ship didn't even have a holodeck, was infested with alien lifeforms that suck the life outa you (creepy... ._.) and was suffering far worse than Voyager!
@Tyco200 Normally I have extensively long comments.. Instead I'd just like to Ditto what Tyco said! I thought the same thing when i FIRST seen the Eps way back when :) I'd like to add that I Disapproved of said Cpt's end-game Choice but NOT his reasons... Were I in his situation... I might do the same. In either case, There WAS another solution to that Situation.. but leave it to Hollywood & BAD WRITING to kill a good episode... Much like that Eps Titled "one" gee that coulda been a GREAT!
From what I recall, Jellico wasn't crazy at all. I wouldn't even call him an ass. He was just a stricter, more formal commander than the Enterprise-D crew was accustomed to. The crew was behaving pretty unprofessionally that episode (especially Riker).
And I'm not sure how Janeway fails to top the list.
Mostly the inconsistency of her morality and ethics. One episode she'll stand on some abstract principle at great expense to her ship and crew, but in another episode, she's a cold, ruthless pragmatist willing to make moral compromises for the sake of the mission/crew. Her decisions often go against what my strong moral intuition would be, but writing tends to gloss over a lot of the ambiguity and tends to frame things in a way that suggests Janeway is in the right.
@Quinstol perfectly put. I couldn't has said it better myself except to add that these problems all come from Bad Writing and Really stem from Rick Berman. I'm just a hardcore purist that blames Rick for the bad-changes after Mr Roddenberry died. Why? EXECUTIVE PRODUCER; THAT is why. Just look at the Transition of stuff in TNG from S4-S5... pretty Soapy even! Of course DS9 is a PRIME example of how to milk a Franchise while KILLING it. If only Quark & O'Brian wern't relegated to 2nd String.
@glytchd Thanks, Voyager certainly had issues with the writing. It could have been a brilliant show, but combine the overuse of the reset button (which obviated aspects of the show's premise that made it so promising) and a generally weak cast/weak writing ruined it. I'm not a Roddenberry purist though. DS9 is my favorite Trek by a good margin, and I enjoyed TNG's middle seasons as well (not a fan of the movies for the most part, though).
On the one hand, she'll let an entire race be destroyed because it might possibly interfere with the prime directive, or something, but she'll ignore the prime directive in the very next episode.
I wanted to like the Janeway character.
Character inconsistency was probably the biggest flaw in that show.
@AnonymousElektron Hear-Hear and well said... I'll reiterate: BAD WRITING/Directing.. All coming back to..What?? -BAD DIRECTING- Can anyone say RICK BERMAN?
@Direwolf0702 Well, Janeway's awesome, but comeon! Look at some of the stuff she did, allying with the borg to kill a species meant to save a race from being annihilated, and she wiped out the crew of the USS Equitor!
thats so wierd i got the newest issue of star trek magazine last week there was a part called starfleet officers that are mad bad and dangerous to know and everyone in that video was on the list no more no less[benjamon sisko was on it aswell]
@trekthomasromanmyste i could see that, just think about it in starfleets eyes you have a caption of a space station calling himself a profit from the gods of a beaten down race... First they figured hes playing the part bullshitting to ahead their agenda then they realize he really thinks hes a profit O.o.....
@Orca8472 He was an asshole, but how was he a moron? He at least was less of a pussy than Picard. "We'll blow up these Cardassian ships and be back at Starbase in time for cornflakes!"
Actually with the exceptions of Braxton, Tracey, and Garth, none of these people were insane. Maxwell was right about the Cardassians, Jellico was a skilled captain but simply wasn't likable, Keel rightly suspected there were changes in his crew and was killed for it, Ransom was trying to get his crew home under very dire circumstances, Jameson was trying to right an old wrong of his, etc.
@DJEclipseNiagara Technically, he was a captain until he lost his ship. That is why he became a Commodore. I understand that a Commodore is the same rank as Captain only a Commodore has no ship to command.
@232fkz Historically (for European Navies) Commodore is above Captain but below Admiral, usually in command of a small task force on assignments too small for a fleet but too big for a single ship. It was a fairly rare rank, mostly used for Captains long over-due for a promotion but lacking the "friends in high places" to make Admiral. Star Fleet stopped using the rank of Commodore sometime after the original series (probably because the US Navy doesn't use it)... blah blah blah...
@Vegabond13 the US Navy did use the rank of Commodore until the 1960s when it was changed to Rear Admiral Lower Half. the rank of Commodore was basically a one-star admiral.
@Vegabond13 Actually the U.S. Navy does use it. However, not as a rank, but a title. It is someone with the rank of Captain who commands a squadron of ships, subs, etc.. So in a way it is still used in its original form. Since Admirals are too high ranking to command a squadron, only the most senior Captains are assigned. In terms of rank, the U.S. Navy replaced Commodore (0-7) with rear admiral lower-half.
Hey! I like most of those actors.... Don't hate them for bad guest spots. I think they're jealous of Captain Garrett and the craziest most loveable "shoot from the hip, we should hate her, but sh'e got that 'all American Girl Smile'"Janeway! As a few of you have mentioned, she should be number 1. Kiss Kate Mulgrew on the cheek some time, it makes a gay man get butterflies :-)
I disagree with the ranking. Braxton WAS crazy for real. He had temporal psychosis. So he should have been in the top ten. (Fuck you Janeway, you made one man crazy. Someone should have killed that bitch).
Also I think Maxwell should not be included. He was right all along. Sure he had some issues like Posttraumatic stress disorder, or something, but he was not crazy.
In my Star Trek universe; The Borg, Q, Time Travel and the very irritating Mirror Universe does not exist! The story lines are pants and my imagination can only go so far when it hits the wall of stupidity thats when it ends! Think of this way with the new film when Spock goes through the black hole why doesn't he and Nero head for the star thats going Supernova in the past and use the red matter to stop it then??? Time travel is Impossible End Of!!!
No Sisko or Janeway? Sisko punched Q in the face and thought he was the Messiah (what wouldn't I have given for Dukat to deliver that famous Monty Python line) and Janeway was a bipolar, coffee addicted, incredibly butch yet not nailing Seven (come on, who wouldn't in her position?) and an all round maverick (and a Q called her a bitch in a very witty manner, that has to count for something).
@DocWolph Sorry for the late reply, but I had a chance to rewatch that episode and you're kinda right. He did try, but he might not have had to resort to those extremes if the aliens tried to be peaceful. At least he saved the lives of the hostages both times he was to that planet
I haven't seen all of DS9 yet, and am half-way through TOS, but yeah, Janeway was crazy as hell, so was Archer, but maybe he was just plain dumb or something. I mean, the dog was probably smarter than him, and more competent in close combat.
Commodore Matt Decker was a good officer who's actions were the result of severe trauma. His subsequent heroic death demonstrated the way to defeat the Doomsday Machine. (oh shit. I sounded like a geek)
janeway was like jesus in bringing back the dead, cuz she had a crew of 150 beginning and 140 in the end even though 1 or 2 crewmen died every episode
Jameson was an admiral, along for the ride to mediate some phony hostage situation. But he was a nutter for sure. Taking that rejuvenation drug to the point of an "OD".
Janeway ultimately ended the Borg. Watch Endgame. The end. And she really did get to boss Picard around in Nemesis. Greatest cameo ever. Well except for Nimoy in the reboot. HOLY SHIT! Its rebooted! All this is trivial!! (Janeway could kick new Kirk's ass.)
Janeway should be in this video. She was the Gilligan of Starfleet. If her crew had mutinied and confined her to quarters, they would've been home within a month.
Why the FUCK did u include Keel, Scott and Rixx?????? Those 3 did something Great!! They gave Picard great intell that allowed Picard 2 save the fuckin UFP from those creatures! Don't include them with these other fools!!!!
Agreed. Scott might count, but the other 2 were definitely not crazy. Also, Jellico, was never unstable, he simply had a different management style than Picard, which of course clashed with Riker. Otherwise, good selection!
Captain Garth definitely needs to make an appearance in at least one of the next 2 Trek films. Although I would prefer they actually explore the story in which he is tragically injured, I would even be happy with a pre-accident cameo.
kirk was a bigoted pervert, don't kid yourselves, he was and you know it! picard was a balding pussy who couldn't take 1 scrap with a single borg cube. sisko was an idiot with a messiah complex. janeway took on an entire unexpored quadrant of unpleasant aliens (including the borg) and dangerous anomalies, freed 7/9 from the borg and proceeded to flirt with her constantly and on a diet consisting entirely of coffee! she is the ultimate badass, like margret thatcher except she isn't evil
"Captain" Decker was actually a Commondor. Used as an unofficial designation for a captain in the Navy temporarily in command of a fleet division or squadron. Designation above a Captain below a Rear Admiral.
Great ! But the clip is missing one special "ingredient" to make it truly awesome: a SHORT ACCOUNT of the event that earned each Captain his/her place...
Jelico? Yes, he was a stiff micromanager but not crazy. Jelico was a sharp military strategist who also had a very rigid "by-the-book" type of demeanor. The scenario is so similar to the mix of military leaders today in the U.S military forces. Some leaders are strong yet flexible & compassionate delegators (like Picard and Riker) while others are also strong but as abrasive as crushed rocks (like Jelico).
@stafflvr Janeway was badass. she rivalled Kirk in her self-deitification. she believed she could do anything. she kicked Q's ass, 8472's ass, the borg's ass. she made Braxton crazy, she wiped her ass with the temporal prime directive, she hung out with Leonardo DaVinci, she went back in time to save her crew, she fucked up majorly but never faltered. this is the essence of a Starfleet Captain. this crazy drive. Picard seems like a wuss compared to her. i mean no blasphemy, but you gotta see it!
@MrHoppers002 i'm sure going back in time to save your crew is a court martiable offense. :D Janeway dodged the whole bullet. plus she got away with more than that simply cuz she was in the Delta Quadrant, i'm sure she would have been court martialed lots of times.
Badass? More like bullshit. Initially the character of Captain Janeway was indeed quite promising, but eventually her mildly defiant streak exploded out to dominate every aspect of her existence. For every victory, there was crewmen dying pointlessly and her writing checks her butt couldn't cash that usually ended with cliche "Deus Ex Machina" plot devices bailing her out.
Captain Janeway: the most shallow and ultimately pathethic "marqee" captain to wear the uniform.
@sword4005 Or because he doesn't want to leave his ship. Even Riker was offered his own crew several times and yet he stayed with the Enterprise for many years past his prime. Janeway was a great captain but wanted to move up in rank. Picard will always be the most respected Captain in the fleet.

I haven't seen all of DS9 yet, and am half-way through TOS, but yeah, Janeway was crazy as hell, so was Archer, but maybe he was just plain dumb or something. I mean, the dog was probably smarter than him, and more competent in close combat.
Alekkkkkkkkk 8 months ago
You should have thrown Riker in there. The guy killed a version of himself for christsakes!

And Janeway isn't on this list why? o_O
TheDarkFrontier 9 months ago
Commodore Matt Decker was a good officer who's actions were the result of severe trauma. His subsequent heroic death demonstrated the way to defeat the Doomsday Machine. (oh shit. I sounded like a geek)

Half expected Kirk to be number one with Janeway as number two. The both of them had the biggest balls in Starfleet.

@bjeh001 have to agree both of them usually break the prime directive to survive

janeway was like jesus in bringing back the dead, cuz she had a crew of 150 beginning and 140 in the end even though 1 or 2 crewmen died every episode

Jameson was an admiral, along for the ride to mediate some phony hostage situation. But he was a nutter for sure. Taking that rejuvenation drug to the point of an "OD".

the captain of the u.s.s. reliant in star trek 2 went crazy, although he didn't start out that way.
oregonflatland 11 months ago
Janeway ultimately ended the Borg. Watch Endgame. The end. And she really did get to boss Picard around in Nemesis. Greatest cameo ever. Well except for Nimoy in the reboot. HOLY SHIT! Its rebooted! All this is trivial!! (Janeway could kick new Kirk's ass.)
hoochpooch 11 months ago
worst captain goes to star trek enterprise. The whole crew suck except for the vulcan girl.

@asuch874
Agreed. Scott might count, but the other 2 were definitely not crazy. Otherwise, good selection!

@asuch874

Although I would prefer they actually explore the story in which he is tragically injured, I would even be happy with a pre-accident cameo.

kirk was a bigoted pervert, don't kid yourselves, he was and you know it! picard was a balding pussy who couldn't take 1 scrap with a single borg cube. sisko was an idiot with a messiah complex. janeway took on an entire unexpored quadrant of unpleasant aliens (including the borg) and dangerous anomalies, freed 7/9 from the borg and proceeded to flirt with her constantly and on a diet consisting entirely of coffee! she is the ultimate badass, like margret thatcher except she isn't evil

why is darth sidious dressed up as a starfleet captain?
GODLIKE20000 1 year ago
"Captain" Decker was actually a Commondor. Used as an unofficial designation for a captain in the Navy temporarily in command of a fleet division or squadron. Designation above a Captain below a Rear Admiral.

Great ! But the clip is missing one special "ingredient" to make it truly awesome: a SHORT ACCOUNT of the event that earned each Captain his/her place...

Seriously. If you take a random sampling of people that Starfleet has put in command of ships it seems like a fairly incompetent organization.

How can you put Walker Keel in this list. Your not crazy if your actually right about a conspiracy.
Agniumtheras 1 year ago

Matt Decker wasn't completely crazy, he was the one who's sacrifice showed them how to defeat the doomsday machine.
Self Sacrifice to save billions of lives and multiple star systems isn't crazy.

i think Janeway deserves a mention, if not to win. she was a crazy sumbitch.
LemonOdette 1 year ago
@LemonOdette Maybe in the top LOUSY captains.
stafflvr 1 year ago
@stafflvr Janeway was badass. she rivalled Kirk in her self-deitification. she believed she could do anything. she kicked Q's ass, 8472's ass, the borg's ass. she made Braxton crazy, she wiped her ass with the temporal prime directive, she hung out with Leonardo DaVinci, she went back in time to save her crew, she fucked up majorly but never faltered. this is the essence of a Starfleet Captain. this crazy drive. Picard seems like a wuss compared to her. i mean no blasphemy, but you gotta see it!
LemonOdette 1 year ago 54
kirk did something janeway never did....being court martialed twice and get out of it in one piece. lol
MrHoppers002 1 year ago
@MrHoppers002 i'm sure going back in time to save your crew is a court martiable offense. :D Janeway dodged the whole bullet. plus she got away with more than that simply cuz she was in the Delta Quadrant, i'm sure she would have been court martialed lots of times.
LemonOdette 1 year ago
I would've loved to see janeway thrown in the stockade. lol

okay, you're right, janeway is badass.
she's so badass she could get kirk two fuck her twice.

@LemonOdette ...All of your points are made off of a FAKE TV show...therefore this ridiculously long comment is completely worthless.
deadwater62 1 year ago
@LemonOdette
EXRazeBurn 1 year ago
@LemonOdette thats why she a admrial in nemisis and picards still a captain
sword4005 11 months ago
@sword4005 Janeway should have been court marshaled honestly
SwordsmanMercenary 11 months ago
@sword4005 Or because he doesn't want to leave his ship. Even Riker was offered his own crew several times and yet he stayed with the Enterprise for many years past his prime. Janeway was a great captain but wanted to move up in rank. Picard will always be the most respected Captain in the fleet.
