Pardon my ignorance folks, but all these missions give me the impression that we never went to the moon. We haven't been able to control impact with the lunar gravity.
I remember the results of this mission by the way, all they said was "we are not sure what we just way there", because they couldn't see anything.
@20324758 i pretty much know life is abundant, life is everywhere, one day mankind will find out that we have been lied to for a long long time...sorry to say you were wrong,i meant more on the lines of, there is more chances than not that there is life there. it is much more to it than a dead body in space, this is what we are suppose to believe...btw, a dead body use to be alive , wonder if something is still there...probably so
@natalencja7676 Our planet is a self-sustaining celestial body and our footprint on the Earth is mere compared to the millions of years of evolution. Earth will be fine.
As for this mission, it is far more important than you think.
What? xD They didn't blow the whole moon to bits, they just crashed a small rocket there. It didn't even budge. Moon's fine! Werewolves are still intact!
so you blow it up, because it could be a relatively rare and valuable resource... that's awesome logic to me... (hint of sarcasm?) Because yeah there could be water in this crater and who could turn down destroying (scattering or vaporizing) what little water might be left in that entire area... There's deeper motives behind this mission. It reeks of it.
Nasa was so owned by India's water detection breakthrough not 1 Apollo mission found admitted water, even Canada detected snow on Mars and they would not credit our LIDAR system.
Moon= Next dumpster send it all radioactive waste to the moon instead of dumping it in the indian Ocean. and yes I am smarter than all of NASA put together.
only thing good about conolizeing the moon is it can be just a back up planet just in case a meteor crashes into earth or if the earth population is growing to high that people are going to need to goto a different planet
true that, but the moon is perfect practice mission to mars, we could learn a whooole lot from colonizing the moon first....mars is too dangerous for 1st colonizing mission. Mars will be an exciting venture though, for sure! the 2nd home to humanity, the moon...just a station unless we are able to create a habitable atmosphere for the moon xP...hey it might be possible now...science advances fast.
If any of you actually thought this was a real waste of time, then you would DO something about it instead of preaching your ideas on YouTube. Water on the Moon is a GREAT discovery (That is, they better damn well find water on the Moon).
So our economy is in freefall, California is about to collapse, they've just pumped a $1 trillion into our economy (massivly devaluing our currency) and they are bothered about finding fucking water on the moon? What a collosal waste of money.
They figured if they didn't find water, at least they would discover the coolest way to blow 79 million dollars ever, so it seemed like a win-win at the time.

Also, I dont know how rich your country is(don't know where you're from, don't care to know, from your clear lack of respect), but if your country can afford a mission as expensive as that, tell your country's space program to go for it(if you have one), that way it comes out of your tax dollars not the american people.

hey mister astroscience guy, correct me if im wrong but doesnt the moon have a certain type of chemical fuel thats cheaper and cleaner than fossil fuels? i rememebr reading something about that. colonizing the moon would be great if this is true.
i actually haven't heard of that, you might be right, although cheaper and cleaner than fossil fuels? I can tell you it wouldn't be cheap getting that to earth thus it would not be cheap to buy. I can tell you that there are many asteroids out there that are very rich in fuels we could use. It's very possible that we would use asteroids as unmanned mining stations in the distant future.
The only expensive part of it is leaving earth's surface, and returning from earth orbit. Landing and mining on the moon is about as complicated as throwing your cat on your couch. It's not as easy as teleporting it there would be, but it's not difficult at all.
We have certain types of fuel that are available on earth that are cheaper and cleaner than dead dinosaurs as well. And yes, there is a good energy source on the moon (read about it too, can't remember the name though) as well as other valuable minerals and ores. However, the moon's surface is not that dense and fairly fluffy, so you would have to mine deep to get those resources. Mining operations on the moon would probably be more efficient money wise in a few years when new tech. is invented.
The cost of mining fossil fuels on earth exceeds the cost of resource (maybe not volatiles) recovery on the lunar surface by three fold. Take half the money our oil companies receive and you'd have a full resource collection factory on the surface of the moon in ten years. Oh wait they already did...
yeah! You're thinking of Helium 3. Primary source of fuel for Fusion Torch style propulsion. We supposedly don't have the infrastructure to support such a fuel. Or so we're told... But more science is already accepted about Helium 3 consumption than was about Fossil Fuel consumption 100 years into it's use. Funny if you think about it.
well would you look at that, just a couple of minutes of research and i learn something important about the moon. if only others would do the same. anyways thanks for the answers man.
if you guys have any questions about this, i'm an astrophysics student, i live in southern california close to JPL and the famous griffith park observatory, i also do observational astronomy. I'll be happy to answer your questions.
okay well its like..... why are they wasting money on sending things to the moon when we are all in aresession, not many people have money, but the goverent pushes for this? even if this all went well and stuff the only people who would be able to touch, hear ect.. would be rich people and goverment, becasue all the real people in the resession dont give a shit about bombing the moon lmfao, we are trying to survive and eat here.
so lets say there is water on the moon.....umm how does that do anything for anyone?? sounds like nasa is just having fun with our money. I could care less if there is water on the moon, or aliens or air...its a fucking rock in the sky
If there is water it could sustain life. I'd rather sacrifice 79 million to science than the billions the government wastes for greed and corruption. This is a small price to pay for knowledge of our moon. imagine if we never built the Hubble what we wouldn't know.
really? if we find water ANYWHERE outside of our planet it means everything to us. You might not care if they find water but the people that will colonize the moon do. If we lived according to your logic, earth will only always be the only place for us, the earth will die too you know, what's to say we dont get hit by an asteroid soon, we have no place to go and the earth becomes inhabitable? what then of our survivial. Astronomical science is the most important longterm investment we have.
wow good thing nasa wasted 80 mil, big price to pay for jack shit. Nasa didn't find anything, and I don't think it will be in our life time or your great grandchild's life time that we will ever even think about realistically colonizing the moon or mars or any planet.
I don't know how old you or your grandchildren are but space programs around the world are actually seriously planning colonization of the moon and mars as we speak. Nasa did find something btw, they gathered the data they needed from this mission. You need to do your research before making yourself look a fool, I don't believe you know the first thing about astronomy.
I don't have grandchildren dumb ass, and it aint gonna happen, people might be serious about colonizing the moon but its not gonna happen in our lifetime, go watch another episode of star trek or something
i should have known, nobody as immature as you would even have kids, let alone grandchildren. Thank you for clearing things up for me, you know shit about astronomy. Get back to me when you have an educated argument. On the mean time save your immaturity for the trailer park.
You bring up a good point....I know shit about astronomy, but I do know about the reality of people colonizing other planets and the reality is IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
it's something that has to happen man, we really have no option in the matter if we want to survive that is, earth wont last forever, and gambling our futures into 1 planet is risky, we could lose it tomorrow for all we know. Every astronomer will tell you that colonizing is important, essential for our survival, something we have to start doing soon, ,but funding it is hard because a lot of people think astronomy is bullshit....unfortunately.
never? for a long time boats made of metal was thought impossible. FAIL!!!
HEY since it wont happen in our lifetime then we should stop trying at all right? so that not even future lifetimes can have access to it either since science is about building on the results of the past. so if we stop trying it will never get done.
because it's cheaper. You want to send an astronaut with a shovel to dig?...be my guest, btw that will be billions of dollars and dangerous, care to write a check? ...credit or debit? as far as "nuclear attack" poor choice of words on his part.
Small amounts of water. Not enough to help future missions. Fail.
They say it was a cheap mission. "Cheap" to Nasa is still millions of dollars. In this case, wasted dollars. Just like the space station. What good is it? Just a dollhouse in space to float around in. No discoveries or anything of real interest came from it. Nasa, please stop taking billions of dollars out of US circulation. That money is needed down here and can be put to better use.
we spend 350mill a day in iraq... this is chump change compared to that... if we gave the troops a few days off nasa could have all the 'toys' it wants... this planet and its resources arn't going to last forever... the sooner we learn to colonise space or harvest minerals from asteroids/planets the better off we all will be.. who knows, we might even find another planet to live on, or maybe even another species to have more wars with...
this is to the individual(s) like pistonpants that think blowing up the moon would have no impact on our planet ... please PLEASE clue us all in on what planets you've been to and had their natural satallites blown up and the planet had no significant draw back.
to hell with this -- put a giant nuclear bomb on this thing - THEN - you'll get some good measurements. If the moon splits in half , no biggie , we don't really need it anyhow , except for nice pictures
And when man thought he was wise he was only a fool.Man will never rule the heavens. These people are insane they dont understand the repercusions this could cause.
Soooooooo these highly qualified 'rocket scientists' are bitch slapping the moon to find water...............at not just purely for shits and giggles.......yeah right. Wonder if you'd be able to see it from the UK.
Clearly this is not just for shits and giggles. I realize there is a certain amount of sarcasm in what you said, but you make the mission sound ridiculous.
If you were to travel 500 years into the future and looked back in history, these missions would be regarded as the first steps that humans took to colonize space.
This is cool! I want to live on the moon! I don't think the moon has enough gravity to hold a big enough atmosphere though :( But it would still be cool to live there :)
probably bombing someone they dont like or to cover up something they dont want the other nations to see,,, or maybe they want to sell moon water to the public untill theres no water left there either.
The human race really is like a plague of locusts. We're just going to scavage over as many planets as we can reach. Let's see if we can make the universe extinct...
It saddens me that I am not going to be living in another 100 years to see what Human beings discover next, unless they develop some sort of Medicine that stops or slow down Aging now that would be GREAT!
Except locusts eat what is alive. The planets are inanimate, not alive. Causing damage to the Earth is affecting other living beings, but going over to Mars or the Moon or whatever is not.
Even traveling at the speed of light, a trip to the Anromeda Galaxy and back would be a 5-million journey - and it's practically our next door neighbor.
If there are elevated levels of hydrogen couldn't this also indicate a hydrogen bubble under the suface of the moon? Crashing into the moon at 9km/hr would then create a hole and allow that hydrogen to escape. From what I understand the soil is also rich in oxygen. Wouldn't this be a potentially disasterous combination? Even if the hydrogen is simply released, couldn't this be disasterous? Of course, this assumes that a hydrogen bubble might exist, which is a big assumption.
Well since there is no erosion like we have here on earth the area would be effectively permanently contaminated. So what would happen would be an incredibly stupid thing.
wow I'm out of touch did'nt know they think there maybe water on the moon ,this is big if there is , you only need to get solar panels up there and you can produce oxogen .
Its a great idea even if there is no ice there. A relaitivly cheap way to check it out with zero potential of stranding people up there for the same mission.
What about the carbon footprint this mission will leave on the moon? Or the possible endangered moon life that might be destroyed by doing this? What if it warms the surface by creating greenhouse gasses? WWAGD(What Would Al Gore Do?)? We need to tax NASA for the carbon credits they'll use.
I'm just being a dick. But better you hear it here first, before the nuts come out of the woodwork and start spouting this crap. Which they will.
wow I'd buy moon beer. Lets just hope it doesn't end up like harvard. first you build a brewery and next thing there's an ivy league college around it.
alternate ad: Big guy comes in with a really pretty girl. Pretty girl winks at little guy. Little guy winks back. Big guy glares angrily at little guy. Little guy drinks beer and jumps weightlessly into the air to punch great big tough guy in the face. caption: Moon beer. For the true Lunatic.
I don't know anything about this stuff so my questions are elementary but what is the purpose of going to the moon? Do we want to colonize it? And if so isn't radiation a bit of a problem, I mean how long can a human survive on the moon without getting radiation sickness? So aside from some scientific discovery what would be the purpose? They say "astronauts will search for resources and learn how to work safely in a harsh environment" What resources of any value can be there? And wouldn't...
Think of it as an extreme adaptation. We are really good at it but only because we think very deeply of a solution to an incomodity. This the next smal step for a regular smart race....to live in space! The journy of discovery shall never stop. If we never try then...we already failed.
from water u can make hydrogen and oxygen. I know that we can combine hydrogen and oxygen to get power and water( hydrogen fuel cell cars) but im not sure if we have the tech or not for the opposite. If we do then u could make hydrogen for fuel and oxygen to breathe.
We do have the technology to crack water, that is, to split it into H+ and OH-. Sufficient splitting can result in several possible substances. Hydrogen gas, oxygen gas, hydrogen peroxide, and of course water as most cracking technologies are rather inefficient and allow the H+ and OH- to rejoin into water before other substances are formed. I hope that helps.

really? if we find water ANYWHERE outside of our planet it means everything to us. You might not care if they find water but the people that will colonize the moon do. If we lived according to your logic, earth will only always be the only place for us, the earth will die too you know, what's to say we dont get hit by an asteroid soon, we have no place to go and the earth becomes inhabitable? what then of our survivial. Astronomical science is the most important longterm investment we have.
reaper2ooX 2 years ago
wow good thing nasa wasted 80 mil, big price to pay for jack shit. Nasa didn't find anything, and I don't think it will be in our life time or your great grandchild's life time that we will ever even think about realistically colonizing the moon or mars or any planet.
stavie03 2 years ago
so what? we should like, not even try? surely you can see whats wrong in not trying can you?
adafuns 2 years ago
sure, its fine....lets use Bill Gates money, or Larry Flints money. Considering the financial status of the times, it would seem inappropriate..
stavie03 2 years ago
I don't know how old you or your grandchildren are but space programs around the world are actually seriously planning colonization of the moon and mars as we speak. Nasa did find something btw, they gathered the data they needed from this mission. You need to do your research before making yourself look a fool, I don't believe you know the first thing about astronomy.
reaper2ooX 2 years ago
I don't have grandchildren dumb ass, and it aint gonna happen, people might be serious about colonizing the moon but its not gonna happen in our lifetime, go watch another episode of star trek or something
stavie03 2 years ago
i should have known, nobody as immature as you would even have kids, let alone grandchildren. Thank you for clearing things up for me, you know shit about astronomy. Get back to me when you have an educated argument. On the mean time save your immaturity for the trailer park.
reaper2ooX 2 years ago
You bring up a good point....I know shit about astronomy, but I do know about the reality of people colonizing other planets and the reality is IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
stavie03 2 years ago
it's something that has to happen man, we really have no option in the matter if we want to survive that is, earth wont last forever, and gambling our futures into 1 planet is risky, we could lose it tomorrow for all we know. Every astronomer will tell you that colonizing is important, essential for our survival, something we have to start doing soon, ,but funding it is hard because a lot of people think astronomy is bullshit....unfortunately.
reaper2ooX 2 years ago
never? for a long time boats made of metal was thought impossible. FAIL!!!
HEY since it wont happen in our lifetime then we should stop trying at all right? so that not even future lifetimes can have access to it either since science is about building on the results of the past. so if we stop trying it will never get done.

because it's cheaper. You want to send an astronaut with a shovel to dig?...be my guest, btw that will be billions of dollars and dangerous, care to write a check? ...credit or debit? as far as "nuclear attack" poor choice of words on his part.
reaper2ooX 2 years ago
Small amounts of water. Not enough to help future missions. Fail.
They say it was a cheap mission. "Cheap" to Nasa is still millions of dollars. In this case, wasted dollars. Just like the space station. What good is it? Just a dollhouse in space to float around in. No discoveries or anything of real interest came from it. Nasa, please stop taking billions of dollars out of US circulation. That money is needed down here and can be put to better use.

TheJimsummer 2 years ago
we spend 350mill a day in iraq... this is chump change compared to that... if we gave the troops a few days off nasa could have all the 'toys' it wants... this planet and its resources arn't going to last forever... the sooner we learn to colonise space or harvest minerals from asteroids/planets the better off we all will be.. who knows, we might even find another planet to live on, or maybe even another species to have more wars with...

Blowing up the moon would kill us. The Earth would be fine. The Climactic changes would probably destroy a good chunk of life. (including us).

Soooooooo these highly qualified 'rocket scientists' are bitch slapping the moon to find water...............at not just purely for shits and giggles.......yeah right. Wonder if you'd be able to see it from the UK.
An interesting mission nonetheless.
Cowinspace 2 years ago
Clearly this is not just for shits and giggles. I realize there is a certain amount of sarcasm in what you said, but you make the mission sound ridiculous.
If you were to travel 500 years into the future and looked back in history, these missions would be regarded as the first steps that humans took to colonize space.
RhinoAts51 2 years ago
Lots of sarcasm. And I do hope it is successful.

The moon will be visible above California If I'm reading the sunrise/moon transit data correctly.
The even is scheduled to occur on October 9, 2009 at 7:30am EDT, 4:30am PDT.
I'm in Florida and sunrise on that day here is 7:18.
Although the moon will be visible, I doubt the splash will be.
In the UK you'll need to hope it's on the BBC.
I love the BBC. :)

Even if we did develope interstellar space travel, going beyond our galaxy is unlikey. The universe has nothing to fear from insignificant man.

Yup.

ThinkTank255 2 years ago
well as the moon that has no atmosphere and has been pummelled by asteroids for the last 3.5 billion yrs , I doubt we will make it go bang ;)
sausage4mash 2 years ago
Well since there is no erosion like we have here on earth the area would be effectively permanently contaminated. So what would happen would be an incredibly stupid thing.

I love space exploration.
If nothing else, it leads to better microwaves, pens that write upside down and Tang.
That's just the least of it. It also employs thousands of engineers and draftsmen, with questionable sense, and drinking habits.
It's sort of like looking in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant. Sometimes it's best not to, and just enjoy the food.

Its a great idea even if there is no ice there. A relaitivly cheap way to check it out with zero potential of stranding people up there for the same mission.
petehjr1 2 years ago
What about the carbon footprint this mission will leave on the moon? Or the possible endangered moon life that might be destroyed by doing this? What if it warms the surface by creating greenhouse gasses? WWAGD(What Would Al Gore Do?)? We need to tax NASA for the carbon credits they'll use.
I'm just being a dick. But better you hear it here first, before the nuts come out of the woodwork and start spouting this crap. Which they will.

A interviewer on NPR already did, something to the likes of "why should we blow holes in the moons nice surface?" I had to put my face in my hand.
Bazil 2 years ago
I don't know anything about this stuff so my questions are elementary but what is the purpose of going to the moon? Do we want to colonize it? And if so isn't radiation a bit of a problem, I mean how long can a human survive on the moon without getting radiation sickness? So aside from some scientific discovery what would be the purpose? They say "astronauts will search for resources and learn how to work safely in a harsh environment" What resources of any value can be there? And wouldn't...
notfitforsociety 2 years ago
...working in the harsh environment of the moon be entirely different then lets say Mars?
notfitforsociety 2 years ago
Think of it as an extreme adaptation. We are really good at it but only because we think very deeply of a solution to an incomodity. This the next smal step for a regular smart race....to live in space! The journy of discovery shall never stop. If we never try then...we already failed.
Charlymaumushi 2 years ago
from water u can make hydrogen and oxygen. I know that we can combine hydrogen and oxygen to get power and water( hydrogen fuel cell cars) but im not sure if we have the tech or not for the opposite. If we do then u could make hydrogen for fuel and oxygen to breathe.
ZombieSexmachine 2 years ago
We do have the technology to crack water, that is, to split it into H+ and OH-. Sufficient splitting can result in several possible substances. Hydrogen gas, oxygen gas, hydrogen peroxide, and of course water as most cracking technologies are rather inefficient and allow the H+ and OH- to rejoin into water before other substances are formed. I hope that helps.
