If they were going to spend money on crossing guards they should have invested in an automatic gate system that isnt lowered remotely... Remote causes delays!
also attaching metal fencing to the bottom section of the gates and along the sides of the crossing would help prevent people from taking their bikes under the gates when down.
Better yet just post a firing squad at the crossing and anyone attempting to cross when the gates are down gets shot... same risk as crossing in front of train...
If the people who are going under the barriers got hit by a train and the kids who are walking on the railway line got hit by a train, the families would then try to sue the railway company.
I've been to India. These crossing barriers can remain down for very long periods even when no train is actually coming. As a result, some people have learned to just ignore the barriers and use their own judgement instead. After waiting at a barrier for nearly twenty minutes, with still no train in sight, I did the same and crossed in spite of the barrier.
People cross because they do not know when the train is going to pass. Indian rail authority lower the level 10-20 mins before the train pass by because they do not even know when the train is coming. So people cross it like that.
You can't really blame them. Most crossing gates there lower about FIVE - TEN MINUTES before the train comes. If that happened in the US, there will be a lot of people doing the same thing. THe fault lies in the people who built the crossing gates. THey need to fix the timer / sensor on the tracks.
okay so if you send a indian to the States, they will all go tresspass it because they are used to 5 minutes of waiting and then they all gonna die ??
Theres also a psychological factor as well. If an indian comes to the states, they would follow what others are doing so if everybody stops at a crossing, then they will likely stop. Ever notice how when one person does something (like cross the tracks when the gates are down) someone else follows them thinking "well, they are doing it so it must be ok" and soon everybody plays "follow the leader"?. Same logic applies.
@sophieoftipton i was on my scooter crossed 4tracks close call i almost got hit by an emu (electric multiple unit) it was abot 5 yards away headed for the station 2 miles away
Certainly the most populous, if anything else and in a state of drastic transition.
Keep in mind that statistically, India has graduated an equal number of engineers per annum than the U.S.; But while the U.S.'s rate has flatlined, India's continues to grow.
Don't forget, that China graduates more than twice that of both the U.S. & India.
It apeears that while we've regaled ourselves in our own blind, chest-beating hubris for so long that we've been supplanted while not looking.
Sure, they graduate as many engineers as we (presumably, "we" means "USA"), however they have more than triple our population.
When nations become wealthy, their birth rates drop dramatically. Even Bangladesh is dropping its birth rate. In this century, the world population will level off, perhaps at around 11 billion.
If you've been in India, you may know that oftentimes the barrier comes down 5 or more minutes before the train. I've waited as long as 30 minutes, with a train stopped within sight! That's why people cross with the barrier down, they've run out of patience!
WHY CAN'T THEY WAIT A COUPLE OF FUCKING SECONDS!

Also, since a lot of Indians are Hindus, they believe in reincarnation, so if they do get hit, they'll come back again.

Yet, when I go to India, I have no inclination to do this sort of thing, nor to cling to the outside of a train.

Smelled the streets, the mixture of curry, sweat, urine and poop. Powerful indeed!
Undoubtedly the most powerful nation in the world.
