Shamisen takes years to master, its so difficult; you have to pull certain strings while pressing down others. It's nothing like guitar. I suppose you could try though. :)

I don`t believe anyone uses "Shamisenist" and SHAMISEN PLAYER Is on at least 90% of business cards I have received from Shamisen Players all over Japan (From tournaments/workships,concerts etc...) In Japanese "Shamisen HIKI" is used. or Sou Sha. As in Shamisen Sou Sha plus person`s name ETC...

@morbidmaki yes they are fretless. These usually have two numbers marked on the side of the neck so you know roughly where the two basic areas are for playing. The cheapest I have found a decent one for is about $300 american dollars.

@silverhathhacker What you're thinking of is something that not really like a shamisen or a guitars... What you're thinking of is Đàn bầu, a vietnamese monochord... I'm viet so I know and seen it before. All you have to do is pick the strings with the pinky or a "pick" and bend the rod a little. Sounds easy but it's not because all that tells you where to pick is a small little dot painted onto the board or nothing at all. So it should be a little harder to use than the guitar or the shamisen.
