F1 is going downhill, its becoming a spectacle about which driver can bring the most sponsership to get a drive etc.
D-Diffusers,sideskirts,aerodynamic aids, reactive suspensions-etc should all be allowed,It should be about how hi tech can your car go with no restrictions. We have the same situation that existed before the fia strtd banning to keep costs down. The top teams will always be top no matter what rules are in place. At least give the small guys a chance by alowing them to innovate.
@Leinster4life13 I don't agree "the top teams will always be top". What would you say about Williams, that won 4 times in 6 years? And now?. What could we say about Ferrari that didn't win a champ for almost 20 years until Schumi made it win?. What could we say about the sudden "BAR" win? What about Renault with title in 2005 and 2006, and now don't win races?. Nah, I think it's luck, and having the best designer. And a brilliant driver like Schumi was, or now Vettel.
@platterhof I agree the small teams have won races like BAR and Jordan on the backs of cigarette money or renault on the back of alonso and a quick car.
But the small teams would stand a better chance if they were allowed to radically innovate(safety first obv). The small teams shouldn't be relying on pay drivers to give them the money.
Great news, a bit long on the tooth of the life of a videographer. But either way I really shouldn't complain. You guys are doing stuff no one else is doing. So the videographer segment really should still be there. Nice job trying to meet everyones needs!
JF you make a point about 'sound' and how important it is, yet that has been your weakest point on much of the production for FLD & Shakedown! (it's getting better)
@bigboy789inches that's pretty easy... since it's all open-wheel, anything that is 'outside' of the car is used as an aero-part to a degree.
Movable aero-bits have been outlawed ever since the ground-effect-cars that could literally knock a driver unconscious in a corner, so if you make your suspension adjustable, since it is also part of your overall downforce, you're basically making an adjustable aero-part => illegal.
@bigboy789inches ( read other comment first ) in this case it's even more clear as the adjustable suspension will keep the car level under braking, so it's keeping ALL of the aero-forces on the car completely stable, it would technically transform the entire car into a moveable wing that actually fights off the negative effects of braking/cornering, so the FIA bans it...
So the race was actually pretty awesome! DPG3s looked good and had the speed to match, we got great fighting all over DP and GT. Corvette DPs and the Audi R8 & Ferrari 458 sucked, but we got exciting racing nonetheless
Thanks for this video explaining the original video. Loved it! One of my favorite driving videos. I'll surely geek out with my video camera the next time I'm at a racetrack.
@LeoParente don't get me wrong. I don't know any of them and I personally am sure I would get along with any of them just fine. I am just of the opinion all three just aren't very good together on TGUS. Maybe its the way they are filmed and maybe cause the show is scripted so poorly(it seems that way) I will say Rutledge is the most entertaining on the show. I only watched season 1 and I think one episode of two when I just gave up on the show. Resorted to classic TGUK and 5th gear instead.
Leo, this question may seem a bit random, but i'm getting into watching professional racing (thanks in part to you) do you know where i can get Grand-Am Rolex Series DVDs or any Grand-Am DVDs to watch the past races?
Motorsport filming can't get much better than V8 Supercars in Australia, the cameramen's reactions and the way that the final broadcast is put together gives viewers a great perspective into the racing. Like JF said, the hand and feet shots are great to show the reactions and skill of the drivers and V8's throw that in too. Although it must be said, no amount of camera angles can do justice to Mount Panorama, Bathurst.
Although I like the Fusion and Mustang designs, the Nationwide Challenger is much more of an icon. Way better than the Camry or Impala. Also, thanks for the tips on shooting cars, it's so easy to do it wrong.
@LeoParente Once again I thank you and the team for bringing quality automotive programing to us daily. As far as the Ford Fusion NASCAR, I like it. I also like it that Ford decided not to use the Mustang in cup like it did in Nationwide. Great move to brand 2 models is NASCAR. Good move Ford! Kindest regards, @RickyRea
As both a commercial and creative photographer, I couldn't agree more with JF. The point of creative videos is to not just focus on the car, but the elements surrounding it that transcend the viewer into the action.
I'd like to add that learning photography before going into video is so crucial to get an understanding of. Things like composition, depth of field, distortion, etc. are just as important if not more when it comes to shooting video creatively.
I think F1 is as good as it was just because of all the stuff drivers have to do manually, although the cars are much better than when the wheels just turned the car ... they added on a lot more stuff for the drivers to prove their skill. Anything that reduces the number of things drivers need to do makes the races less interesting imo.
Hey, what gear do you use JF for photography? Im 16 and getting a canon 600d(or 650d if it comes out) and have began going to cars and coffee meets and want to shoot cars because i am crazy about them. I would be nice to know what you use for reference. Thanks ans keep up the good work! loving the show!
You said it Leo, 'the sound'... It's a big part of the sensory experience that a still photographer doesn't capture. Probably a bigger part of racing than the visual aspect, and good for you for recognizing it.
you guys should cover the aspects of shooting or filming a car more often, maybe eventually get deeper into the details or techniques involved. you could even show how to do somethings with beginner equipment (point-and-shoot camera, camcorder, entry level dslr, etc.).
@jeffLR91 But I'm American, and I like cars under 1300kg. >_>
Motor sports is pretty far down the list of major sports here in the US--with exception to NASCAR--but I hope that will change soon. It took me a bit to hunt down info for the kind of races I enjoy--WTCC, Pirelli World Challenge, Super V8, and the like--but it looks like car racing in the US might be on the rise! I really hope so, and all the better if Touring Cars get a good amount of that attention! ^_~
@Jeredin13 my top racing classes are MotoGp, motocross/supercross, Le Mans-related stuff (WEC, LM24, LMS and ALMS), NASCAR, rally raid, motocross/supercross, V8SC, WTCC and Grand-Am
Leo is, as always, a professional though it would have been nice if he had slowed down a bit with the technical F1 technologies. It's refreshing to see JF talking about things he definitively knows. Interesting too.
@jobo022 Wish he could go quality sportscar ride instead. Everything every driver tells me about the new IndyCar says it is major work in progress to get it to perform well. 'F1 Rubens' will probably not like 'IndyRubens' [or have to compromise himself to be 'Indy Rubens'].
Damn on the missing links. Am track-side at Daytona. Won't be able to get them up til tonite. (Forgot which ones was referencing!) Have script @ hotel on PC not on this bb! Sorry.
Speed channel and you guys have different goals with your shooting though. They are trying to tell the story of the race and cover battles for possitions. The shots they get the cars have to be in the picture for a few good seconds. You guys go for more of a short story of the car in a one corner and how the car and the driver handled that one corner. I really like you guys' shooting I think it's really good.
@sleech21 Turns out all the guys are not bad guys [lucky enough now to know Adam, Tanner, and now Rutledge] and pros at their crafts. But, car fans are a tough crowd and seems their talents are not always translating to all. RW's comments in our talk about the Busch brother [and the parents] were entertaining me......Just saying.
Leo, what do you think of the FIA banning this all of this new tech? Do you think that F1 is slowly morphing into watered down version of what it once was? Good show!
you know what if f1 was as strict back then than now. f1 would still probably be still FR. anyways ever since i was a 5 year old kid till now at my 20's i always think and wish that f1 should be the most outrageous high-tech racing ever. too many rules and ban (i think) is killing the race. i would love to see different approach of every team to win the championship. something like LMS.
I love F1, I watch every race including the qualifying and the BBC Forum, and I've been the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. But I HATE how the second something innovative comes along they ban it! Great show. @ JF great to know this side of you and your approach to capturing those awesome shots. Sort of makes up for your comments on the Juke-R...even with that great eye you still cannt see the beauty of it.
Will FIA gonna ban engines next since they get the car up to speeds where the aero bits produce more downforce and since the driver activates it with the throttle pedal, they can be counted as driver controlled aero aids?
It's a bit ironic that exactly when you're talking about your shooting techniques to make things look great, right there you have a few glitches with focus :P No biggie, still a great SD, fantastic F1 explanations and shooting tips... Too bad it isn't Daytona... Keep it up guys, JF has earned my respect time and time again
@gfaffy F1 should be a place to push car technology not force it into an FIA mold drive said it best a week or two ago "f1 is turning into a game of tyre managment."
ive never really paid too much attention to LMS but this year im planning to start following it, that seems to be where the tech is really pushed now.
@c4pnd4n Truth. Up until the 90s it was all about showcasing the brand, the tech, etc., and it was great to watch. Used to be a huge Ferrari fan even during their struggles. Now it seems like its all the same and whichever team can find the best aero package or loophole in the rules will win considering the limited testing.
@c4pnd4n The problem becomes making sure F1 is still about the driver as much as the car. Too much tech or perhaps, uncontrolled development inevitably leads to watching computer controlled science projects go 200+mph instead of watching a man, with technology at his disposal, conquer the laws of physics and other men. Watch F1 from any era before the "computer age" and you'll see its much more exciting without ridiculous rules to "enhance" the excitement factor of the sport.
@c4pnd4n I agree. Take out all regulations and introduce the Red bull X1! Then F1 wouldn't just be the drive of your life but the drive for your life.
Leo, I gotta say man, you are a lyrical poet. do you come up with what you say on the camera on the fly or you are reading a script you wrote beforehand?
I cannot describe how pissed off I am that they have outlawed the lotus anti dive systems, its a brilliant idea!! and the combination of the black and gold livery and the super low front wing makes the car look so sexy, Bernie Ecclestone is a dick, We got slicks back, and soon we're gonna get v6 turbo's back (rev limited though) can we please PLEASE let the engineers loose with the suspension to a certain extent, or at least let them run anti dive for one season before the big rule changes.

@thewakkydude Nothing. That was a little joke because this was filmed last week and the Rolex 24 is this weekend.

Great show. @ JF great to know this side of you and your approach to capturing those awesome shots. Sort of makes up for your comments on the Juke-R...even with that great eye you still cannt see the beauty of it.

I love innovations in a race car but only if it makes more passing.

Will FIA gonna ban engines next since they get the car up to speeds where the aero bits produce more downforce and since the driver activates it with the throttle pedal, they can be counted as driver controlled aero aids?
SeraphimEpsilon 3 weeks ago
why the fuck do they ban stupid shit like this, do they realise it makes for better sport and more innovation

It's a bit ironic that exactly when you're talking about your shooting techniques to make things look great, right there you have a few glitches with focus :P No biggie, still a great SD, fantastic F1 explanations and shooting tips... Too bad it isn't Daytona... Keep it up guys, JF has earned my respect time and time again

i wish the FIA would stop being so restrictive with F1

@c4pnd4n Agreed. The rules/restriction are making the cars so ugly too
gfaffy 3 weeks ago
@gfaffy F1 should be a place to push car technology not force it into an FIA mold drive said it best a week or two ago "f1 is turning into a game of tyre managment."
ive never really paid too much attention to LMS but this year im planning to start following it, that seems to be where the tech is really pushed now.
c4pnd4n 3 weeks ago
@c4pnd4n Truth. Up until the 90s it was all about showcasing the brand, the tech, etc., and it was great to watch. Used to be a huge Ferrari fan even during their struggles. Now it seems like its all the same and whichever team can find the best aero package or loophole in the rules will win considering the limited testing.
gfaffy 3 weeks ago
@c4pnd4n The problem becomes making sure F1 is still about the driver as much as the car. Too much tech or perhaps, uncontrolled development inevitably leads to watching computer controlled science projects go 200+mph instead of watching a man, with technology at his disposal, conquer the laws of physics and other men. Watch F1 from any era before the "computer age" and you'll see its much more exciting without ridiculous rules to "enhance" the excitement factor of the sport.
cobramgh 3 weeks ago
@c4pnd4n I agree. Take out all regulations and introduce the Red bull X1! Then F1 wouldn't just be the drive of your life but the drive for your life.

New Ford Fusion looks sexy. I'd buy one if you could keep the short fenders. We'll see what the production model looks like.
randomted 3 weeks ago
@randomted You can already see what the production model looks like. The model unveiled last week IS the production model. It's not a concept.
