  • I 'm not from Liberia and admit that I'n no expert, but I think there should be a South African-type truth and reconciliation so that people can move on from the painful history. Liberia could be a great country if all ethnic groups felt empowered.Maybe that's naive but it's just my opinion.

  • What was the difference between Rhodesia or South African Apartheid & Liberia under the Americo- Liberians? All three were brutally exploitative settler- run regimes. Is '' Apartheid '' okay when the people st the top of the pile have dark skin too?

(No, I'm not from Southern Africa. Despite the name just a British student of History.)

  • yekepa was so beatiful at the time dammm.

  • The situation in Liberia can really be understood in the context of how Liberia was founded. Liberia was founded by freed black slaves brought from United States of America by the American colonization society in the early 1822. The Americo-Liberian dominated all aspects of political and economic life, making 95% of the indigenous population, who primarily live in the interior of the country less than second class citizens.

  • The Americo-Liberians ran Liberia almost like a "country club", only for few, mostly folks with family lineage that traced back to USA. They copied and practiced the U.S. brutal southern slave master mentality. Worst of all, they ran a kleptocracy, which the so-called indigenous military coup guys learned from them and repeated wehn they began governing in1980. It influenced lacked on initiative in most institutions, a reason that's hindering a dream of a contemporary society.

  • Damn right. You just told the truth.

  • @jagacious - Did the U.S. have anything to do with the murder of William Tolbert and his family/cabinet?

  • All hail!

  • The Americo-Liberian unspoken believes is that Liberia is best governor only when the governor Liberia

  • Im soon going to upload this clip again with better quality.

    Jens

  • President Tolbert Is My Great Uncle. RIP

  • No President in Liberia hould be killed in the manner President Tolbert or Samuel Doe got killed. We have to respect our leaders regardless of their short comming.

  • All those negative comments about the Congo or Americo Liberians is just a rise of hatred.

There should be no need for all those negative comments that I've read. It shows that some Liberians still have hatrd in their hearts. It will takes love and we coming together as people to built Liberia. Not talking trash and trash to a set of people. We all spoil Liberia it's now I duty to rebuilt it.

  • I am not Liberian but I agree. Liberia was a beautiful country...but unfortunately it has been spoiled over the years.

While the Congos did do some bad things to other Liberian tribes, they were not evil as some ignorant people portray them to be. Unfortunately amidst people they felt were acting "uncivilized" Congos looked down on their Liberian brethren-this was wrong! But to be fair they did incorporate Native Liberians into their ethnic group-as long as the adopted the Congo way of life.

  • These are not negative comments. These are the facts,

  • I believe you. People keep on doing the same old mistakes.

  • @jensiator LMAO my last name is Tolbert :o

  • lol Tolbert.

  • the congos or americo liberians held themselves aloof from other tribes they deemed uncivilized-this was natural considering some tribes practice human sacrifice and cannibalism.

  • I am a liberia that now live in the US but I say f the Whole country. The country is so corrupted that we citizens cant even live there we have to come to the US.

  • the problem is the so called americo liberians believe they r better than the other tribes,i had a liberian workmate call me bacongo which is derogatory,i reminded her i was kenyan and their current president an americo liberian was a refugee in my country.

  • Actually Sir-Leaf Johnson of indigeneous Liberian and Germand descent. Her father was raised by Americo Liberians.

  • That is true. Sometimes it feels like all african ethnic groups have been associated with crimes against other african ethnic groups.

  • Tolbert was an Americo Liberian of pure African American descent; unfortunately his ethnic group in Liberia had been associated with crimes and discriminationa against Indigeneous Liberians.

  • thx 4 posting these!!!
