Okay, to me (and apparently Square, too), Zell was like an Anime hero, what with the overt reactions, somewhat notorious stupidity, rowdy disposition, and redeeming qualities. Actually it refers to women as well. It basically means that their gender is indistinguishable. Look up Chrona from Soul Eater. He/She has never been shown to have a gender one way or the other so far as I know. I might have missed something but Chrona just doesn't do anything notable gender specific and becomes really head scratching at points xD
