Gary Oldman seems made for this role. He is an amazing actor(who might i add is greatly under-appreciated). I love this movie...for reasons other than the extreme hotness that is Gary in this movie.

I've always seen that as a physical representation of the blurring of individuality and identity for the two of them. Others have treated them as a single entity for so long, they've grown into that role. Rosencrantz doesn't even see Guildentsern's body as different to his own - or is it the other way round?
