  • 3x the views on this one post than all mine put together.

And you deserve all of them.

    Thanks for what you do.

  • Diggin the bass also !!!!

  • Swinging like a garden gate, love it.

  • This vid is popular on Nauru

  • How could i get this piano sheet??

Somebody can send it to my email adress?

    thanks

  • Beautiful! Love this interpretation, I've gotten tired of the standard and more classical minor versions. Thank you!

  • Hi, what's your BIAB version and your sound module? Sounds great

  • Yep as stated in the description: the notes are just the raw version what the computer is capable of. Left and right hands are not indivcated correctly, nor are the articulations, dynamics and the swing-timing. As soon as I have the time I will try to do a little analyzing of this. To say the least: outstanding! It is so wonderfully flowing and melodic. No unnecessary self-indulging, just one great idea after another. You can hear the original as a counterpoint always underneath everything.

  • u're really good

  • Do you have a pdf file on this?? i really want to practice this one. :D

  • Is it possible to get the score or even buy it? It sound so musical :P

  • hm.. jazz is something u feel..u can't just read notes.. this is what u do when u learn clasic piano

  • @oOlusiOo True. You feel it, but jazz is very important with the notes as well. A lot of the notes are critical to the specific substitutions... sometimes substitutions OF substitutions! Like tritone subs of a secondary dominant is an example I can think of. It's hard to just "feel" some of these things, but I agree it is much more feeling than reading notes, especially when compared to classical.

  • @BlikeNave yeah :) you're right .. i see every day at school this children who play jazz music like is their second nature and i am like :O and they just have a piece of paper in front of them :| i can play piano very good but i am not shamed 2 say that i will never be like them

  • @oOlusiOo All it takes is practice and desire. You can learn everything you need from youtube!

  • Hello, my mom is making a web site, and I have to her select music. Would you mind if we used some of your songs? Of course you will be named. If so that would be great. Email me at laxdiv3rs07@aol.com and let me know! Thank you, I find this just wonderful!

  • wow, it looks -and sounds of course- nice! Is it a program which you can record what your playing on the keyboard and which writes the notes down? I have piano which can be plugged to computer. And It would be cool if we could note down the keys we've "pushed"...

  • The ending/outro sounds like Miles Davis' 'So What.' Great job.

  • Band in a box..a software i haven't seen in a while!!!!

  • I suck at piano.....

  • ΚΑΛΟ

  • Very nice touch on the piano. Nice lines. Check out my Autumn Leaves Hip Hop kind of beat i tried to make. Definitely not as good as this :(

  • you make me never wanna play piano again.. i dont think ill ever be this good.. and im intermediate piano player.. but all the jazz i know comes from sheet music.. wihch sounds NOTHING like this... and obviously theres no solo part in the sheet music i buy.. if you know of any teachers in miami for really intensive jazz like this please let me know

  • Ciao, dove trovo la partitura di questo brano?

  • i dont know anything about music but the red dots go up and down like a rollercoaster!

  • la melodia se llama hojas muertas no hojas de otoño exelente improvisacion

  • i know band in the box but it sounds like you are using a 'real' drummer who i think is not cutting it like he should

at least the kick is way over played.

    your playing is very good.

    sorry.

    stoic

  • it is not gp 5.2 music?

  • Love your mellow sound. All on the same page musically. Love it when it all comes together like this.

  • very good :)

  • I could try and play this on my piano *_* Sounds great!

  • What's the point of writing this all out? It sounds like something that should have been improvised. I can't imagine sitting there reading someone's pre-improvised solo

  • The midi site is sadly down :c If you'd be so kind, would you send a link to your collection? I liked your work very much.

  • @Nicolai0Nerland My midi site is incorporated into my website - the address is above in the notes under the video

    Doug

  • @jazz2511 where can I get the full sheet music for this piece?

  • jazz = real music! :D

  • may you please upload the manuscript of this?

its hard to play and keep pausing to read the notes!

    thank you

    :)

    great sound!

  • what scale would be used to play with this chord progression

  • @Rostro27 There are many options, but if it had to be played with just one scale, the Bb Major scale can be used. The basic chords are all diatonic to the key of the piece (2 flats - not 3 as shown on the notation!). It is in fact a good exercise to limit yourself to just those 7 notes as you improvise. Of course, as always, the main thing is the changing importance of each note as the chords pass. From 0:57 - 1:11 uses basically just the Bb scale (A naturals are shown as accidentals)

    Doug

  • @jazz2511 Hey doug, I have a question: are there any particular voicings you prefer for dominant seven and suspended chords?

  • is playing the piano hard?how many years does it take just to learn the right hand movements?

  • Very good!

  • For me, the bass doesn’t walk calm enough

  • wie geil!

keep the work up, thank you for sharing this with us!

  • Awesome playing!! It's a shame that band in a box can't recognise the two hands separately, this would make following the music much easier..especially when octaves in the right hand are employed.

  • can someone please tell me how to play those left hand bass chords with the melody?

  • Learn the bill evans piano voicings...a good book to get is "The Jazz Piano Book" by Mark Levine. They are sometimes called AB voicings as there are to inversions of the same chord.

  • Do you like Michel Petrucciani?

  • Can someone tell me what band in the box is about? I heard of this program back in the 90's when my father was alive- and he used it. Don't mean to sound elementary-but when I seen this inscription- it jumped out at me.

  • Absolutely the best ... tremendous presentation! Will start working into my internet radio/tv shows - Chatauqua Weekend and Chatauqua50309 - for breaks, intros and finales.

  • hard..T_T

  • Hi! Have started playing this tune a couple of days ago. My question is what u do after the first 32 bars (when you should start soloing). Do I use the same chords starting over again or do I make up new ones as i go? Id be thankful for any help

  • I love this kind of music. Great job :)!

  • what kind of scale is at 0:55

  • @104grandpiano It's not a really a scale, but an idea based on the chord extensions of the G minor. The melody is not always scalar.

  • love jazz, and like the tips, what if you have small hands, I have trouble with anything more than an octave.

  • HI, Can anyone tell me how I can ascertain such a composition in MP3 format?

    Thanks

  • oh my god i love this so much...

  • Hmmm....but God created humans...so by default His creation created jazz. I'll stick to thanking God.

  • @trktrt god created humans? i disagree. life came from this earth, like a flower grows up from the ground. humans created jazz. no imaginary person in the sky helped one bit with this beautiful music. Stop being delusional!

  • I am classically trained and jazz trained played with alot of people and heard alot of people and this is my favorite jazz piece and I love your rendition the most

  • very nice!! thank you doug! where can I get the sheet music for this transcription? I followed your link, but I couldn't find it... thx!

  • Oh Em Gee !!

  • just wonderful! OMG...I love this! Great job!

  • What plugin u use in BB??? the sound is better than usual =]

  • This is FANTASTIC improvisation and playing.

  • I´m amazed by this! I have never really been much in to jazz, but would really like to learn more about it. Where should I start if I wish to develop an understand of jazz and jazz theory? Are the any good books/websites I can look into? (I can play the piano and I consider myself musical, and I also have a basic knowledge of theory, but know very little about jazz) basically, where should I start? Thank you!

  • @djeikop Im the same way man, i've just never really got into it because of the lack of exposure of jazz. I would really like to know more about it, and start playing it. I play piano as well as guitar and drums.

  • I love the chord progressions from 1:58 to 2:05

  • fucking love the end

  • I really like this! does anyone know where I can get this score?

  • i really remembered my dad playing jazz music. with lots of adlibs.........thanks....so nice and awesome...

  • Szeretem ;)

  • Amazing!!

I usually play this tune in key of Gm.

  • really lovely. great learning aid, thanks a lot for posting!!!

  • Well, that IS the key of the song silly.

  • @yazawashunkichi it is in g but the key signature writing is misleading. ;)

  • Fantastiico...

    Grazie

  • Playing jazz is driving me crazy lately. I can make my improvisations sound kind of nice now but they often just feel empty to me, as if I don't have a clue of what I'm doing. I think I got descent ears but inventing on the spot is not easy.

You're a great player and I try to learn as much as possible from your videos. My respect for people who can improvise composed like melodies is huge, and the passion for the music keeps pulling me back to the piano whenever I feel like I should quit.

  • @Paintblob Its like telling stories, you know the content, even the punchline, but each time you can use different more efficient words They asked Mike o Tuner if he ever was at loss what

to play. He answered that he had to not play so much which was on his mind

  • @valvetrom: You're completely right about telling stories, and I fully understand that concept while listening to jazz; it's just that it can get frustrating sometimes while learning to play it. I felt hopeless when I wrote that first comment, but I'm feeling much more confident and patient now. I know I'm making progress.

It's much about developing the connection between ear and instrument to express the ideas you hear in your head, and having a little technique at your disposel really helps.

  • Listen to this song and tell me that it's not carefree. Playing jazz should be fun just to play until you master it, or you're trying too hard, right?

I've been playing jazz trumpet for eight years, and I can't for the life of me remember being frustrated-- I'm absorbed when I play.

  • @Paintblob Dont quit man... I know how you feel... I really want to improvise anything but i cant!! Im trying so hard... but you know more then you think you do. Im sure of it

  • @Allornon Don't worry, I won't quit. It's too late for that, I just can't quit! You keep at it too!

  • @Paintblob Practice, practice, practice. ;)

  • @HaeJude I hear ya!

  • @Paintblob

Get a good teacher and/or some good books.

Don't stick too long to books. Learn from the books and/or teacher but

spend most of your time experimenting and expending on what you have learned.

    Practice in all keys.

  • @cocovi I'm glad to have a good teacher now and I started playing in a combo, which has been very challenging so far, but I know a good thing. And yes, I should practice in all keys, that's one of my weak points..

  • @Paintblob DONT RELY ON YOUR EAR! it only gets you so far. i have a well trained ear but when it comes to real jazz; gets you no where especially if your pianist is only doing voicings. learn to solo by reading chords. it will cut a lot of frustration out. good luck

  • @djbot Yeah I just started to learn about that, soloing by reading chords. I'm trying to find a balance in it cause I do believe the ear is very important too. I think knowledge and a well trained ear really strengthen each other.

  • @Paintblob Keep plugging away man, as long as you just keep at it, you'll get there, I promise!

  • @GeorgeBrooks09 Thanks, I definitely will!

  • @Paintblob That is the beauty of it, I know that feeling..it's all about the music.

  • @Paintblob the good news are that there is not a single aspect of playing that you cant isolate and master separately. Including "composed like melodies". The reason for "frustration" is only that the problem is not well articulated, and hence neither is the solution.

  • @SIRUS80 Yeah I guess you're right. I think (in my case) it's also a lack of fundamentals, that makes isolating every aspect of playing more frustrating. That's why I'm thinking of giving jazz a bit of a rest for a while and take some basic 'classical' piano lessons first, which I never had. Also for my lacking technique and for being able to play more freely, and move in between different genres of music.

  • @Paintblob well classical music will definitely give u more proper technique (which is something most jazz greats of the past never had, by the way), but it will not help improvising in a written-melody style, or anything that has to do with coming up with 'worth listening to' notes, in real time.

  • very Bill evans. haha

  • in my real book CD it's in Em but you should be able to play it in any key. ;)

  • I normally play it in Bbm, but it's originally in Gm. But it doesn't matter what key you play it in, as long as it sounds good.

  • yeah either is good...i go Gm Cm7 Fm7 Bb Gm

  • here I am!

  • Think I might try and adapt some of this for guitar. Nice work!

  • This was like too cool. I have always wanted to see something like this -- that is -- to see the playing and the notes at the same time. It was magical. Enjoyed to playing. This was Midi? Thanks.

  • Guys do you know what is the original key of autumn leaves? So many people play it in different keys... I play in G as I heard it was the original...bur people say different things...

  • G minor I believe

  • Most people play it in G Minor but it's in A minor in that Real Book, so a lot of students lay it in a minor.

  • Thats Good

  • wow....

  • fantastic .... can u send me the music sheet pls.

  • Great using of the fretless bass sound replacing the double bass

  • Brilliant and beautiful!

  • Nice and relaxing.

  • First chord is not always the tonic.

this song starts on IV so key should be G mi indeed

    Playing is OK notation weird

  • Mr. McKenzie you are a dream come true. I thank you for all the jazz piano students who don't have $30,000 for school. God bless you.

  • hey i play rums good drum solo this easy maybe! :D

  • とても良いです^^

    jazzの中で一番好きな曲です。

  • you sir, are my favorite thing on youtube. i cant begin to tell you how much your videos are helping me grow as a jazz musician, this is better than any book or manual i have. thank you thank you thank you. five stars

  • Great music! Is there anyway you can send me the sheet music?

  • Amazing! Enthralling! Fantastic! Greetings from Scotland!

  • Wow,nice...My mom luvs this song so she asked me to search it up.She like it.Very Good!!!:)

  • Very nice, excellent phrasing and use of space too. what program is recording your playing? Can you do a video on just how you get this music into this format?

  • DOUG YOU ARE THE MAN.

ALthough, just one thing... why oh why is the key in Eb? Surely it's in Bb... (relative major of G minor) you have unnecessary naturals for many A notes. But the playing and your ambition is undeniably admirable. Keep it up!!

    Kenny, from London

  • this is sick. thank you. i needed that.

  • Is there nothing on the planet more satisfying than jazz music? Is there? Oh my God thank you.

  • @trktrt nah , dont think so.

  • @trktrt i'm thinking the same thing.. whenever i want to relax i just listen to some jazz and i just feel soo warm inside

  • @trktrt don't thanks God, Humans created jazz without needing any god..

  • @trktrt

Johann Sebastian Bach is at least as much an satisfying as Jazz Music ;o)

But this is a very fine peace of music !!

  • @trktrt Yeah. Here's something more satisfying- playing real music.

  • @trktrt Yes. Listening to jazz while getting laid.

  • This is actually useful - Hooray for a useful Jazz Piano Vid on You Tube!

    Nice work!

  • thank you so much !!

  • Wow!! WE have come a long way with the digital age -Thanks! And thanks to the engineers and Utube for the opportunity to see this during our life time. Not only is it an eyeopener but infomative as well.

  • Thank you!

  • can you guys not read the music right there in the video...he even gives you chords so you can improvise or just play with chords on the left hand while playing the melody on right, it's just simple music...theory I guess

  • yeah where can you get an alto sax part

  • Awesome video, and you are an awesome piano player. What is the source for the sheet music?

  • Can you lend the BIAB file?

  • what program is this?

  • band in a box

  • 1. We need to transcribe this into guitar tabliture with note lights.

  • some people are just too good

  • AMAZING

  • superb
