Even if Reagan knew about it all (for which there's no evidence), so what? Arms dealing always finds a way round obstructions &, although freeing hostages for a few M16's is bad, its not the worst thing in the world...

It wasn't about "a few M16's" it was about antitank and antiaircraft missiles. This is a violation of international law. And the US Congress forbade I repeat FORBADE the president to finance the Nicaraguan Contras.

All I know that Michael Ledeen, a consultant of National Security Advisor Robert McFarlane, requested assistance from the Israeli Prime Minister for help in the sale of arms to Iran. Reagan stated that it was the Iranian opposition to Khomeini. In Reagan's account, McFarlane told Reagan that the Iranians offered to persuade the Hezbollah terrorists to release 7 hostages. Later the Walsh Iran/Contra Report states that the arms sales were to Iran itself.
