Yea people like to judge solo's as you the best is. But I look at overall, Matt brought alot of unique grooves to the table. Most people don't see but he paved the way for alot of danny carery's stuff.
Oh yeah, i get that....but Carey's more intense style was pretty much well-formed by 1990/91.... I don't think Matt's personal style was fully sussed till that point either.....I can see maybe early Soundgarden being an influence on the band a little bit but not so much Cameron on Carey....idk..sorry for long response, too.
Ten of my personal favs in terms of technical ability, energy, groove, originality and live performance. No particular order other than of course Danny Carey at #1. Danny Carey is to drums; what God is to man lol. Matt Cameron Mike Portnoy Jimmy Chamberlain Dave Abbruzzese Sean Kinney Taylor Hawkins Dave Grohl Lars Ulrich Brad Wilk Dave Lombardo Travis Barker (not a fan of his bands since I was a teenager, but he's a beast)
don't get me wrong i like rage and audioslave, but brad wilk's drumming gets kinda repetitive for me. what songs would u say showcase him best? Abe Cunningham from deftones is another good one.
I agree, Brad isn't the most technical drummer on my list; but to me, him, Tim Commerford and Tom Morello have some of the best chemistry ever seen in the music business. They groove together so well it makes you want to get up and dance around; (which is rare) and when you think about groove, eventually it all ties back to the drums. That's probably why I listed him.
"Show me how to live" comes to mind off the top of my head. Especially the first 1:25 of the song.
@redneckchilipep Anything off Rages first 2 albums shows Brads great grooving and fill-work. I agree from there things got a bit dull. No shelter was a great song though.
Man you completely forgot the best drummers from that list. Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, Tony Royster Jr., Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Ed Shaughnessey, Neil Peart, etc.
The classics are great, but the drums have evolved.
When I look at guys like Peart and Bonham (who were legends of their time) I don't get the same vibe i get from a Danny Carey. Remember, a lot of the drummers I put on that list are there cause of what they bring to the band as the drummer, more so than actual drum ability.
With a lot of the classics I find myself thinking: Could a guy like DC play this?
I've seen regular Joe Blows on YouTube emulate Danny Carey. Not to take anything away from him, he is an amazing drummer, but I think he is from the best. I don't think he could emulate Buddy Rich. In fact I don't think anyone has.
All i can say to that is...no. No he doesnt. Matt Cameron is great, and i absolutely love soundgarden, but drummers like vinnie colaiuta and dave weckl pretty much kick his ass...and basically KILL travis barker.
man listen to soundgarden, there is nothing that grooves more than that shit. He makes 5/4 sound like its in 4. i don't think travis barker could play a song like "limo wreck" in his wildest wet dream.
yea that's in 9, but it doesn't really sound like 4. day i tried to live has alternating bars of 8/8 and 7/8 (i think) and that definitely sounds like a straightforward 4.

Yes, he could.
Then, could these guys emulate DC?
I have my doubts.
