If it hadn't been for "Smiley Smile" (Which I like, but was heavily slammed in the states) and which Carl called a "punt" instead of a "touchdown" I think most of what the Beach Boys released during the middle years (1967-73) would have been competetive with the Beatles in sales and acclaim.
They missed a beat (so say some) and all this great music, like "Breakaway" got lost. Fans who only listen to 1961-66 and the later music have missed a great era of the BB's.
@TheBoldImperator Break Away was never a #1 single in the UK! I think it got to #6. I meant it's surprising it wasn't a bigger hit on the USA. A lot of BB records fared better over in the UK. Look at the reception PS received, for example.
Lonely Days is a beautiful little number .. Capitol stuffed up ( so very typical of that record label) in not letting it on the album. The lesser-known versions of ASM & Break Away are equally stunning to the ear. These BBs songs from this era take me away to a wonderful place in my head .. this was really the band at its vocal best. And additional congrats go your way, Traderfiles .. the visuals on this posting are absolutely first-class !! Really !!
Brians Demo of Breakaway sounds great. it's hard to believe, it was just a quickly rehearsed version of the song. Of Course, Carl's Finished version of Break Away was better. Also, I'm a huge BB fan, but, I've never heard Lonely Days before. i don't remember seeing it on any Albums..
lonely days was supposed to be on wild honey but capitol changed the songs on them, this would happen alot later on, they would make one track list then the record company would refuse it and they would send a new one until it was approved

In fact, Good Vibrations and Do It Again were the only BB singles to reach #1 in in the UK.

That's three great songs, one of them being not that easy to find if you don't have Hawthorne.
