the weaponis of type 10 is still L44， same as type 90. As Japan cannot produce Ni-Cr-Mo-V alloy for tank gun, semi-finished product is bought from Germany, then reprocessing in Japan, and this is "made in Japan" :) Also, the shell is still using DM23 and DM33, produced from Germany, cuz Japan do not have ability to produce APFDS for tank.
In conclusion, the AP ability of type 10 is 500mm, front protection of new MBTs in Asian countries is at least 600mm.
weight of type 10 is only 44t. this tank cannot fight against any 3rd generation tank in the world such as M1A2 SEP(62t), Type 99G(54t), T90(48), K2（55t）, and Leopard 2A6（62t）. Based on the fact of M1A2 in Iraq, weight means better protection. fire power of type 10 also cannot penetrate any 3rd generation MBT in the world, cuz type 10 still using L44+DM23/33.
As today's MBT, it's too light (44 tons), compared with most 3~3.5 generation MBTs (55~65 tons) of other countries. This means that Type 10 sacrificed many MBT features, especially the main armors, as it had to fit into the weight limitation for Japan's domestic roads and bridges.
Thus, Type 10 is only for Japan's own use. No one would buy such a ridiculously light tank as a MBT even if Japan is allowed to sell it overseas.
@youngk9lover It's on purpose for better handling, speed. It is made specifically against IEDs and RPGs etc.. Anti-Guerilla tank. It can go the same speed backwards and forward and it does have advanced modular armor that can easily be upgraded.
As I wrote, the real reason for Type 10 tank's lightness is because it must fit the weight limitation in the domestic bridges, roads and railroads of Japan. This is a dilemma for JSDF's future tanks, too.
Other countries can also make such light tanks simply to increase speed and handling. But they don't. Think hard why not. And MBTs of other countries can also have modular armors very easily these days.

this would actually be a much better choice as a tank for the USA to use in afghanistan instead of the abrahams and such because it was specially made against RPG-7 and such terrorist and taliban weapons. It is also much smaller and lighter than the Abrahams allowing for easier plane transport while mainntaining a 120 mm smoothbore cannon and being much more maneuvrable thanks to CVT
@kazzemg Is it durable? Don't get me wrong but tanks were never really made to be small and light. That goes against what a tank is supposed to do, a MGS or IFV would be a better idea. Tanks are supposed to hold ground and support infanty and light vehicles. If a tank can't do that then it fails. Sure this tank can be easily transported, but whats the point if you have to transport in replacements more often.
@Crisis7 The M1 Abrams is battle tested and proven, surviving several hits from RPG's, Land mines, and various IEDs. These tanks have never been destroyed, only disabled or a crew member was injured or killed by the enemy. There are more M1 abrams that are destroyed by friendly fire or purposely when abandoned than insurgents. Manuverability isn't something to talk for a tank, its like saying a slug moves faster than a snail i.e. not a big difference.
@Crisis7 Actually tanks were made to cross no man's land and to take the enemy trenches by storm, not hold ground. A disabled or stationary tank might as well be dead for all the use it serves, mobility, armor, and firepower, the triad of tank power. Mobility, being able to move fast enough so the enemy can't hit you, armor for when the enemy manages to hit you, and firepower to hit and kill the enemy.
Japanese could earn so much more revenue through arms exports if they just scrap off their silly White Paper rules. Countries will be ready to die for Japanese weapons. Look at this beautiful tank. Its a beast!

@milvipes It's not too bad for something considered "Low end". Yeah it's lightweight and lacking, but it's small and fast. A bunch of Type 10's running around might have a greater chance of survival than larger tanks :D
@peepeevagi Japan is the only "Western" nation (in term of military doctrine & NATO compatibility, not culture) to adopt this hi-lo mix approach. Other Western nations tend to standardize around a single type of MBT.

日本周辺の頭の弱い露助や中国や朝鮮と違って、公の場で日本は100%の性能を展示しない。
実際の機動性の6割程度の披露だろう。
中国製のハッタリ新鋭戦車なら3台は相手にしても問題ない。
10式小隊ならシナの99式なら倍数でも対応可。
比較的に足場の悪いところでこの運動性能だから、世界の軍事評論家向けに軽く見せた程度だ。
余談だが、90式も10式も搭乗員になるには徹底的に身辺調査される。
祖父が在日でも搭乗員にはなれないし、普段の素行も見られる。
親戚に朝鮮系がいてもアウト。
10式は日本以外には創れない戦車であるのは間違いない!

と言うより、12.7mm重機関銃M2は対空機銃としての意味合いが強いと思います。基本的に対人用としては同軸機銃を使います。戦闘中は車長も砲手も戦闘室で忙しい訳ですから。
でもリモコン式の機関銃も便利でしょうね。

リモコン式の車載機銃は61式特車（戦車）では配備されていたわけですから、74式以降では必要ないと判断されたんでしょう。戦車は死界が多く、いくら車外カメラ等のハイテクが発達したとは言え、人間が乗り出してが目で見張る方が確実です。
あるいは、戦車は単体で行動するわけではありませんから、随伴する普通科に任せましょう。

あなたの仰る通り、戦車単独ではただの標的です。戦車は歩兵を守る盾。歩兵は戦車を守る槍。そうあるべきなのです。隠れた対戦車兵は戦車じゃどうにもできませんし、砲撃、あるいは歩兵が直接排除せねばなりませんのであります。接近する敵装甲車は歩兵では力不足ですし、砲撃、あるいは味方装甲車が破壊するのであります。
そうしてお互いが助け合って、それが戦線なのではないでしょうか？だから、戦車にリモコン式機銃なんてコストが増えるだけなのであります！！
まあ、自衛隊も入ったことないですし。図書室の本でしか戦争を知らない自分が言うことではないでしょうが

@zclass37 イスラエルやイラクのように市街戦における戦車の役割は変わりつつあり、目立つ標的である戦車には歩兵を随伴させずにUAVや攻撃ヘリで遠くからバックアップさせる方法もある。そういった意味では生存性を上げるリモコン機銃は有用ですよ。

高性能なアクティブサスのおかげで90式以上の射撃統制出来るから運動性能とあいまってかなりのレベルかと。
モジュール式の装甲も良く考えてる。チョバムアーマーやアクティブアーマー、事によっては新規武装も施す事が出来るようになってるのでしょうね。ヘルファイヤーみたいなミサイルユニットを装着して戦闘なんて事も出来るかも？？？

@peepeevagi well either of them coud easily destroy eachother so im not really sure who would win. I guess it would be a matter of who got the first shot off :D This tank is definately more high tech but might have a little bit softer armour. I would vote for type 10 mainly becasue it just looks much cooler.

@peepeevagi The older Type 90 is actually superior. But it was too heavy & too expensive. The Type 10 was created as the low-end of the hi-lo mix.

@milvipes It's not too bad for something considered "Low end". Yeah it's lightweight and lacking, but it's small and fast. A bunch of Type 10's running around might have a greater chance of survival than larger tanks :D

@peepeevagi Japan is the only "Western" nation (in term of military doctrine & NATO compatibility, not culture) to adopt this hi-lo mix approach. Other Western nations tend to standardize around a single type of MBT.

@milvipes Be that as it may, on their native ground those Type 10's would be unstoppable. More so than the S-tank in it's native grounds. And it's small! And fast! It'd be the hardest thing to hit on the battlefield lol.

@Saffronwing1 I'll agree. It's got a special transmission that allows it to go as fast backward, as it does forward. This will allow it to back out of a high risk area, and regroup/retreat with smoke a lot faster then with the norm.

@Saffronwing1 Japanese weapons would probably gain as high popularity as US, UK and French weapons, so yes, they would gain great income from this industry - and Japan needs a great income in the economical crisis.

@Saffronwing1 Japan has a healthy economy selling what it already does. It does not want to deal with the political baggages associated with arms export: note how much flak the US is taking for arming Israel.

I've read that this is one of the best tanks in the world. Would like to know it's stats, cannon size, armor, top speed. Does it share any components with the US Abrams or German Leopard?

@MrDavkoz Probably uses standard NATO gun and ammo. It makes me think a British Challeger and a French LeClerc had a one night stand. :) .

戦車も必要でしょうけど、目的が対テロ対策が目的なら、車幅が2.5ｍ以内の小型ハイテク装甲車も必要でしょう。
