I'm soprano, and my singing teacher and ex-choir-leader always wanted to put me into alto... or 3rd or 4th voice at all....I hate it....it's not that I can't sing it, it's just no fun^^

I might not sing, but I do act and this translates very well into the other side as well. I'm a good actor, I can pull off the lead/supporting roles, but I'm always getting shoved into the little side characters who's only job is to run in, say "I have a message for Romeo!" then leave, or if I'm lucky deliver some exposition in 1 scene then are never seen or heard from again.

I heard it's more of a "soprano thrown into an alto's world" type of piece and her justification for wanting to sing soprano is that she can (not badly, but beautifully, and in tune; however, her sight reading is so good they want her singing alto), but if there's an alto who can sing a high C and high A, then there'd be no reason why they couldn't sing it.
I'm not a singer, but I play the viola (which is in alto clef) and this song is an absolutely perfect example of what we have to go through >_< haha, it's so funny
@Felttheneedtocomment Try playing the bassoon. I get excited when I get to play an accompaniment that has any importance. Like I practically jizzed in my pants when I found out my orchestra was playing the Habanera from Carmen because the bassoon gets to play quietly with the strings for the "dum, da-dum dumdum, da-dum dumdum" part.
Just give me the dang Soprano part, dangit! I can do the solo, just not the too-high notes. But I'm starting to think I'm always Alto because we don't have any actual altos except for two XD
can i just point out that sopranos are mainly used 4 our high notes? im a soprano and as much as i love my high notes, i do want 2 sing low every once in a while. and altos u guys r lucky, i find it hard 2 find a solo song that really shows off my high range. u guys theres tons of songs 4 u.
@abcdancer551 I think what you want is the SOPRANO'S LAMENT, they cover all that stuff. Besides, altos really do think this way. YOU try singing a well-known song WITHOUT A FREAKING TUNE! It's all the same note or a different tune from the one you know. Now, don't get me wrong, I think that you have a valid point, soprano song that show your full range are hard to come by, but we would rather that than " ooooo, ooooo, SOLA SOL-OO-OO! (that was, in case you didn't get it, Sola Solew for an alto)
@abcdancer551 Sweetie I don't know where you sing but I think your being robbed. Sopranos are used for everything. Songs that feature altos or even have good alto harmonies are usually written by altos trying to remedy the lack of good alto songs.
Forget "medley" and "melody" (although it *is* melody, since altos rarely get it, and that's what the song complains about). The word that was missed in these lyrics was "teeny". The word "tiny" was used in its place here.

Well, there are songs only prober alto's can give justice Sopranos will always suck at. more dirty funny songs. Lucy from Jekyll and hyde, "Sally Bowls" Cabaret, I mean honestly, a Soprano would just choke trying to sing "Cabaret" because it needs so much umpf and goes so low, a soprano would just make it sound weird and frilly. So cha! go out and show those sopranos what they will never ever be able to do! sing some dirty cabaret Jazz with and edge and push them of the stage
Instead of trying to be a pretty singer I have made myself into the funny person. So I got to play parts as "Lefou" out of beauty and the beast. "Pirelli" in Sweeney Todd and Mr Smee in Peter pan.
Guy parts I know, but they are always lacking guys while having a ton of girls, and if you are talented and funny enough, speaking your case to what-ever teacher, there's no reason you can't have some parts, those parts are the most fun I ever had.
Darn, this would have been a perfect audition piece IF IT WAS ACTUALLY FOR ALTO. Regardless, this made me laugh quite a bit, thanks so much for sharing!
Also, it's most definitely MEDLEY. As katterbug said, a medley is multiple songs put together into one, while melody is the regular tune of a song. In the case of this song, medley is the only word that would make sense, because it's some of her "finer roles" put together, one after another. It's definitely not the melody, and that's what she's complaining about.

This was really neat thank you for making it. There was one line you might want to change, "It would be Nervana from having such manor" I believe should be "It would be Nirvana, from heaven such manna" it's a reference to the food God gave the Israelites in the dessert. Thank you again!
I actually pride myself with singing so low, because I can sing as low as half the guys I know. I think it's cool to be the drums to the guitar or the glue to the glitter... you get my point. Yes it does get annoying that I never get any solo's but I think it's awesome when the alto section belts out a note and the director turns and smiles! Yeah, I get that I'll never be an ingenue in a show, but who cares, I'll have have the time of my life being the bloody mary to your nellie forbush!!!!! =)

Well katterbug. They say education is the process of finding out more and more about less and less. The journey is a long one, so on your bike. Did she sing a medley? Yes. Did she sing A melody? Yes. Was it THE melody? No it was not.
So TRUE! The only semi-decent "alto" role I've found that's a main female that's not completely evil is Mimi Marquez from Rent, and really, she's more like an alto with an amazing head voice and an uncommonly high range.
Keep shining girls! I sung alto for years and never got a chance to show my skill. I sung out a high e flat in rehersal one day and got moved to sapreno. Now I sing swing(: your day will come. Broadway here I come.
i'm a second soprano and my choir never did any songs that included my group so i often had to lip sync when it got to the end of my range.... which happened a lot.... there was one song, that's right ONE SONG in my entire choir experiance that my group got to shine and that was "Rhythm of Life" from Sweet Charity.... but i guess we never had it as bad as the altos. Sorry Girls!

I don't know why all the girls who are soprano complain if they even get "demoted" to soprano 2! lol I love the richness of the low stuff and not trying to hate on sopranos I'm told I'm one myself lol but I think it's funny how many sopranos I know who have trouble just getting down to middle C. :)

Instead of trying to be a pretty singer I have made myself into the funny person. So I got to play parts as "Lefou" out of beauty and the beast. "Pirelli" in Sweeney Todd and Mr Smee in Peter pan.
Guy parts I know, but they are always lacking guys while having a ton of girls, and if you are talented and funny enough, speaking your case to what-ever teacher, there's no reason you can't have some parts, those parts are the most fun I ever had.

Also, it's most definitely MEDLEY. As katterbug said, a medley is multiple songs put together into one, while melody is the regular tune of a song. In the case of this song, medley is the only word that would make sense, because it's some of her "finer roles" put together, one after another. It's definitely not the melody, and that's what she's complaining about.
Don't argue it if you don't know what you're talking about.

This was really neat thank you for making it. There was one line you might want to change, "It would be Nervana from having such manor" I believe should be "It would be Nirvana, from heaven such manna" it's a reference to the food God gave the Israelites in the dessert. Thank you again!

I actually pride myself with singing so low, because I can sing as low as half the guys I know. I think it's cool to be the drums to the guitar or the glue to the glitter... you get my point. Yes it does get annoying that I never get any solo's but I think it's awesome when the alto section belts out a note and the director turns and smiles! Yeah, I get that I'll never be an ingenue in a show, but who cares, I'll have have the time of my life being the bloody mary to your nellie forbush!!!!! =)

@katterbug4494 Actually it's melody. In the song she is referring to singing the MELODY of the song as opposed to the HARMONY. A medley is a collection of many different songs in one piece.

So TRUE! The only semi-decent "alto" role I've found that's a main female that's not completely evil is Mimi Marquez from Rent, and really, she's more like an alto with an amazing head voice and an uncommonly high range.

Keep shining girls! I sung alto for years and never got a chance to show my skill. I sung out a high e flat in rehersal one day and got moved to sapreno. Now I sing swing(: your day will come. Broadway here I come.

i'm a second soprano and my choir never did any songs that included my group so i often had to lip sync when it got to the end of my range.... which happened a lot.... there was one song, that's right ONE SONG in my entire choir experiance that my group got to shine and that was "Rhythm of Life" from Sweet Charity.... but i guess we never had it as bad as the altos. Sorry Girls!

[I feel the pain of the alto. I truly do. Buuut. Alto's actually get the harmony[some of the time] in You'll Be In My Heart. I forget which arrangement it is, but whatever. It was REALLY nice. ^_^]

I love being an Alto! I don't know why all the girls who are soprano complain if they even get "demoted" to soprano 2! lol I love the richness of the low stuff and not trying to hate on sopranos I'm told I'm one myself lol but I think it's funny how many sopranos I know who have trouble just getting down to middle C. :)
