Ooohh...The profanation of the Soviet Labour Day!! Was Gorbachev too optimistic about reforming the system and mantaining control of it? Here in Italy we say: you can't have at the same time your wife drunk and the barrell full!
I wonder if Gorbachev even thought ahead to what possible consequences his reforms might have on the party & himself. There are signs that he going by trial-&-error with some of his measures (Ex: first pressing for presidential powers, then trying to organize a coalition between Russia & the other republics--which seems like an about-face (volte-face?), as the conservatives obviously thought.)
@woodbineRed I think Gorbachev did not know where we wanted to go, he was naive and incompetent. It is very easy to destroy but very difficult to build.
