Hmmm... I dunno if I would describe book-Humbert as VERY subtle... maybe just "subtle"... Hmmm... I remember that at times he was most... just... repulsive... and his intentions were completely transparent. Perhaps this scene IS a bit OOC, though.
Dallasdeckard - I've read the book 3 times now, most recently at the end of last year. You are absolutely correct what you say about his persuit of her and her withdrawing. I remember how later she gets away from him via Quilty, and of course how he hunts Quilty down. I believe though, that scene was from earlier in the story, and that's the point I was refering to.
They could show him just watching under Lolita's skirt. For exemple, his pen falls down on the floor, he goes down to reach it, and right there, he starts to look under Lolita's skirt (with a POV and a tracking in). But it's true, that scene is not important.
I think this was actually the combination of two scenes from the book. I vaguely remember one scene, still in Ramsdale, when Lo was leaning out the window or at a table reading, and Hum crawled to her just like that. But I don't think she caught him.
And another is, if I remember this rightly, Chapter 10 in Part 2, where Hum talks about how he would crawl to her on his knees to put his head in her lap, and she wouldn't like it of course, and mimic his "tic nerveux" (eyes blinking).
I don't understand why he was doing all that. They were already lovers, so he saw her body and everything he would like to see. So what's the point??? I don't get it!
@jagjava Actually this was taken from the book. Humbert recalled that sometimes his love/lust for her was so hopelessly strong that he would crawl on all fours towards her like some kind of pathetic creature.
@jagjava Clearly you haven't read the book. As their sexual relationship progresses, Lolita loses interest and eventually has to be bribed to have sex with him. As she withdraws from him, he becomes more obsessed and more aggressive. Yes, he was subtle in the beginning, but in the latter stages (as was the case here) he becomes overt and dogged.
@jagjava I think they were trying to recreate this scene of the book:
"Lolita would be haphazardly preparing her homework, sucking a pencil, lolling sideways in an easy chair with both legs over its arm, I would shed all my pedagogic restraint, dismiss all our quarrels, forget all my masculine pride - and literally crawl on my knees to your chair, my Lolita!"
I have to agree with a below comment; this scene does come off as silly, but mainly because 1) I don't remember anything like this in the book, but my memory might be faulty (anybody find anything to justify this scene?) and 2) I could only think of Scar when I saw him crawling towards her XD
ya and in the book it also sed dig my face in your plad skirt
