@17bluemoon1 Churchill wanted to have a foothold on the Continent and Greece presented an opportunity to get one. With hindsight we see it was a bad idea, but British generals didn't think that the Axis were capable of launching a counter offensive in Africa so soon. Yes in the end Germany intervened in Greece to help the Italians, and the British were routed from Cyrenaica, Churchill did kind of fuck up there but we can't be so critical. Not helping Greece would be a political disaster.
AFTER 14 NOVEMBER GREEK OFFENSIVE DESTROYED ITALIAN FORCES..IN 2 MONTHS GREEK ARMY LEBERATE THE GREEK CITYES IN SOUTH ALBANIA-NORTHEN IPEIROUS..CORYTZA, AGIOI SARANTA ,ARGYROKASTRO, PREMETI ,POGRADETS, TEPELENI, XEIMARA...IF NAZI DID NOT ATTACK ANGAINST GREECE IN 1941 THE ITALIAN FORCES WOULD SWIM IN ADRIATIC SEA..
Actually there were Greeks, Australians, New Zealanders and Cretan civilians who fought on Crete and they too inflicted heavy casualties on the Germans. Cretan civilians and young, untrained Greek recruits inflicted heavy casualties on the Germans themselves so it was not just the British who did the fighting. In fact the Germans attributed many of their heavy casualties to the role played by Cretan "francstireurs" (irregulars).
@ellinoamerikanos-All the english knew was to retreat.and because of their presence in Greece, which was at their insistence not the Greeks, was the sole reason the Germans invaded otherwise they would have left us alone as it should have been a war between the evil nazi's and the equally evil english empire . It was not our war. Our war was with the italians
Between the British, Australian and New Zealand Troops, were also Greek Troops.
The Greek forces consisted of approximately 9,000 troops: three battalions of the 5th (Crete) Division of the Hellenic Army, the Cretan Gendarmerie (a battalion-sized force), the Heraklion Garrison Battalion and remnants of the 12th and 20th Hellenic Army Divisions.
