Indeed sir. The man of the people bringin all the churn together. Dusty had a spontaneous eloquence and off-the-cuff poetic genius that, as a white kid in the South, I found absolutely inspiring. To a lot of youngsters who knew nothing of the civil rights struggle he was MLK, Ali and PT Barnum rolled up into one big lovable package. The man had soul and a bionic elbow!
@jerzeefranky3475 Lawler was small peanuts compared to the American Dream baby. If it weren't for Andy Kaufman, Lawler would have never got out of the south. Jus say'n.
This is my favourite Dusty promo ever. This man was a genuis of self publicity. Dusty was way ahead of his time. In my view, next to Hulk Hogan, the most charismatic man in the history of professional wrestling.
MighyBlack I'm not lying look it up. Ali freely admits to copying much of his ring persona from the great Gorgeous George, a wrestler he idolized during the so-called Golden Age of wrestling the 1950s. It doesn't diminish Ali in any way and if anything, it shows what a huge wrestling fan Ali was as a little boy. Flair freely admits to borrowing phrases from Arn Anderson such as "What's causing all of this?" Dusty's legacy isn't diminished in the least from borrowing from Graham or Ali.
I know Blassie had a real brash persona back then too. Everything I've read and heard it was Georgeous George that he copied. Ali was always a big wrestling fan so the wrestling match with Inoki makes perfect sense.
Rhodes borrowed heavily from Graham. Dusty has stated in numerous clips Graham was his "idol" when he started out.... *don't remember Lawler and Rhodes ever hooking up in Memphis in the 70's....
A lost of this is lost in context or is he just being incoherent? The "Long Distance Information" rhyme he cuts short, is that from another promo? or did he lose track of what he was trying to say?
@GrooBee1 You don't speak Dusty-ese, do ya. I dug the man's rap. Did you expect him to quote the whole song? That isn't the Dream's style, baby. You gotta get right!
Had the pleasure of meeting The Plumber's Son yesterday. Grew up watching him with my dad. Good times. Being a Tampa native Dusty ALWAYS took time for kids and his fans. A true gentleman in the community.
I got a wcw pay per view once when dusty was still commentating there. My dad came down to watch part and asked us who the black guy talking was. Classic!
Calm down! He gave Thurnderbolt credit and put him over by copying him. Wrestlers don't stand up and say during the promo, "I'm about to copy Thunderbolt or Ali or Superstar". They just do it. This promo is a classic. I heard elements of Muhammad Ali, Thunderbolt and Superstar Billy Graham in here. This is why i always liked Big Dust so much. Way to go for Dusty!!
If you're an up and coming wrestler and you want to be able to give good promos, there are three guys you should study - Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes and Superstar Billy Graham. Those guys set the standard.
NWA Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling was and always will be the best wrestling there ever was. being from the mid-atlantic area myself, i am proud 2 say that. wrestling of this caliber is gone 4ever. thank God 4 memories
Let's face facts. Back then, you couldn't think of Ric Flair without Dusty Rhodes & vise versa. From ring robes to gestures & manurisms, Yhose two had a chemistry unlike any in all of pro wrestling.
Dusty Rhodes was like Muhammad Ali to me as a black kid growing up, he was on tv more on the local stations in Florida along with Gordon Solie and they made Saturday night fun and going to matches at the Armory and then the local high school to watch them wrestle for 1 1/2 hrs was awesome. Dusty Rhodes was one of the most influential athletes to me. I ended up being a McDonald's All American basketball player and I talked trash like Dusty. Thank you Dusty.
Hardly. If that is the case, toss in Abdullah, Crusher Blackwell and many others. Wrestling is not about who looks the best but who can put butts in the seats, especially back in the regional day. And, more than just about anyone in the 70's, Dusty put butts in the seats.
