  • It must be an illusion. The bow foil has no anhedral.

  • @talaria41

OK. I was confusing the skeg on your bow pod for the foil on the far side, making it appear anhedral. It was a side photo of the bow pod retracted.

  • What foil shape did you choose for the foils? I assume it was one of the NACA shapes. Also what was the material and fabrication method? The front foils with the taper look particularly hard to machine.

  • @monstroth I'm building new foils, designed using xfoil. They are close to the NACA 66 series. The bow foil is of high density unidirectional fiberglass. The aftfoil is currrently machined aluminum. The new aft foil is of carbon and fiberglass. My website has more specifics. Googleing Harry Larsen will bring up the IHS site with a reference to my web site.

  • @talaria41 Harry, thanks for the response. One more quick question: I noticed in one of the photos on your Talaria IV website that the boil foil assembly has slight anhedral design. What was the purpose of that as opposed to having it be completely horizontal?

  • Yep. What you can do after you retire from a company that profits from making war machines. Too bad we waste our resources on war otherwise we all could be rich enough to own one of these.

  • how many gallons an hour is that badboy using?

  • @alanlad1 About 9 gallons/hour at 30knots

  • How about when the computer crashes, what happens? Wouldn't be easier to make a very simple but reliable hardware based electronics with either an accelerometer or one or two side surface followers?

  • @EngineeringFun Yes, the Rave and Hobbie Trifoiler are examples of successful submerged foil hydrofoils using all mechanical feedback control systems. In this video Talaria is flown (from 1992 to 2008) using an analog computer for roll and a mechanical surface follower for height - a very reliable system. In video "Hydrofoil Dreamin" she is flown using a digital

  • You know i bet this would look REALLY cool if i could stop puking from how nauseous the camera shake makes me, lol

  • & if the laptop craps out you do a massive nose dive!? ;D

  • @fawnication Talaria is flown by a SBC0489 computer. It has never used a laptop.

  • @talaria4 how does she go in rough water?

  • @fawnication 34 knots and smooth

  • I seen this video years ago and the technology is very cool, only problem is its not legal on any of the lakes I boat (state waters) I would have to assume its use would be ok on fed waters.

  • Check out the people building RC airplanes from foamboard. Some use tiny and not too expensive gyroscopes to enhance control. Some of those would work great for stability control on a hydrofoil.

  • Impressive, how much more efficient is this? With the decreased drag did you go for a prop that would give you more speed? How much would this cost? I want to build a human powered boat, I have a lot of research, I would love to pick Harry's brain to get his take on things,All the best.

  • @adsabine1 It has about 25% more speed as a hydrofoil and a higher pitched prop. In large quantities it should cost about 50% of the price of the boat before conversion.

  • Bayliner is like aids, whens u get it u dont get rid of it.

  • that would freak me out seeing it fly past O_o

  • OOOOOOO,AAAAAAHHHHH.....Its still a piece of crap Bayliner

  • nice

  • Great stuff!!!!!!

  • more like flying gayliner. bayliner boats are quite possibly the worst in the league

  • @buttcheeseification Probably why they used this one for the experiment, cheap to pick up used, and worth tossing if they don't work....

  • i love da old porn

  • KOOL BOAT BUT DONT UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT DOES IT MAKE IT FASTER WHT IS THE PURPOSE OF HYDROFOILING?

  • @KOOLITUS Hydrofoils have varrious purposes. In this case it is to provide a smooth ride in waves so that one may travel both fast and comfortably.

  • why all the negative comments. Typical American youth. No wonder the world hates us..

Great job on this boat and keep it up!!!

PS the music IS lame LOL hahaha

  • @captjay2008 shut up. move to china then bash your country, jackass.

  • why?

  • wow an invention that makes a boat no longer usefull. hurray! holla we gots the music in dis beach.

  • Wow a bayliner that can handle rough water!

  • @forcefedmitsu there like tanks, heavy and rough. but good power and speed.

  • say goodbye to WAKE boarding

  • very cool concept , but it sucks that it is o slow

  • def not one of a kind, my dad and I built one of these with a slightly smaller (and Nicer) boat. Ours seems to fly higher too

  • @elckicker thats funny cuz you have zero videos, you probably got an inflatable dingy

  • @boostedpower what does having videos have to do with my boat? nothing really..but uh if you want me to upload a video of it in action come spring time consider it done

  • @elckicker No in your garage or back yard or where ever is fine really, just make sure to include my profile name so I know its actually yours... easy enough right, or you got another excuse why your not?

  • cool boat. but i just dont see hydrofoils practicality. their draft is terribly deep, the engine needs to run a prop a foot or lower then before and the anti roll computer does not sound cheap, and god forbid anything breaks. super smooth and efficient though

  • i wish the camera would move around more; i love contracting vertigo.

  • I'll tell ya one thing, your taste in music couldn't be worse.

  • this isnt low altitide aviation. the air has nothing to do with what is going on here....he is simply just using the WATER as he would air and flying over top the water because of the water. aviation is the manipulation of air to produce lift and flight. this is the same with what hes doing only with water not air.

  • lame

  • Hydrofoils are cool, but nix the dumb music. Just because the editing software lets you add music doesn't mean that you should.

  • Bad ass! No wake either!

  • Great Video!..Hydro-foil boats are really cool, would have been better without music, just the engine noise

  • finally a good use for Bayliner

  • what happens if you hit a log?... and not a poo log... =)

  • @MrRaptur3 The same thing that happens when a propeller driven boat hits a log except the bow strut takes the impact and the propeller is not damaged. You can still get home.

  • Hope that laptop isn't running a Windows Operating system

  • @immakinbacon Despite the video's statements Talaria IV has never been flown with a laptop computer. In this video it is flown by an analog computer designed for Talaria IV. In "Hydrofoil Dreamin" , a video taken 2 years later, it is flown with a digital computer, an SBC0489 programmed in C++, about 1500 lines of source code.

  • @talaria4 I see, makes more since. Very cool stuff, I got a few Arduinos I mess around with.

  • @immakinbacon We are currently using a Arduino based cpu for a dynamic flap implementation on a 40' 27 knot power boat.

  • what the hell? give he camera to someone who DOESNT have cerebral palsy.

  • what retard have chosen the music.

  • Harry unbelievable the number of hater's, "GREAT JOB". Your proving American ingenuity still lives! Envious people crawl out of the wood work when someone else has done the work and proven their dreams.

  • Velvet smooth is right!

    This is more my budget

    youtube.com/watch?v=tkG-yiKRqd4

  • y does it need to fly?

  • how do you trailer it? lol

  • it's not bayliner but gayliner ;)

  • nice job man. but if you worked for boeing why didnt you buy a wellcraft or something respectable

  • @2889joeracer And what respectable boat have you got?

  • @rickcornes at the moment i dont have one. when i was 15 i had a 19' 1989 glastron carlson series special with a 270hp merc i/o. which i put a new floor in. rebuilt a carb. rewired the entire boat. and did a custom interior. i got that for free and sold for 7500. i must say i miss that boat. now my toy is a 2000 mustang gt. i would enjoy some boating tho. looking towards a fishing boat or hydrostream tho. o and i dont really need a boat when everyone else in my family has one.

  • o yea o yeaa yeaaaaa ooooo yeaaaaa fantastic song

  • Well this is the Slutboat. When that boat is off the water, he's busy nailing 3 women he picked up off the beach or if he is at the helm, they are all giving him bj's. Musical choice is only appropriate here.

  • Watch out for that LOG!!!!!!!!!!! OHHHHHH $&!%

  • @ljalaska Talraia has been flying since 1992. So far no damage.

  • Looks a bit sketchy on the turns.....

  • who needs wings to fly buy a donzi--------:}

  • Gotta love the music. Porn-step? Porn'nBase? U name it :D

  • crazy as hell...but cool

  • at 1:13 how does that get u more damp?

  • Do you have a website? Is any of your research open domain? I am looking into making my hobie into a flyer.

  • @gsotodotcom

Google "Talaria hydrofoil" and my website will come up

  • Comment removed

  • i have one of those boats but wiyhout the botem

  • i would like any info icould obtain on what is involved in the conversion of a conventional craft to a hydrofoil

  • i would think it would go faster than 39 because there it so little boat in the water. i have a 18 foot aluminum jet boat that doaes 53 with a 302

  • Talaria weighs 5200#. Its HP to weight ratoio is therefore 200/5200=.038 Your 18' jet boat has a higher hp/weight ratio.

  • How do you get your outdrive deep enough?

  • @Immortal4eva17 There is a 29" outdrive extension insert in the vlvo 28 outdrive. It can be seen on my website. Google Talaria IV Larsen

  • ha no wake zone my ass!!!

  • @nspboarder Thats what I was thinking

  • KALA ANEMOS O ANTHROPOS. THE BEST.!!!

  • thats crazily awsome

    I WANT ONE

or at least a shot on it :)

  • Very cool boat bravo! But if you close you eyes and listen to the lame music then your listening to a old porno movie.

  • @xonds couldnt be more true

  • how much to covert a small boat like this to hydrofoil??

    can outboards be used?

  • if it has a 350 ci. engine in it i would be impressed with 39 mph with that size of boat with hydrofoils. if its say a 454 merc bravo then maybe not so much. what size is the engine?

  • @deville9549

    It has a 305 Volvo 200D 200HP

  • wow!!!!! now that is amazing!!!!! so cool!!!

  • a very creative use of a very old idea. any negative comments are unfounded

both in science and in common sense. i have six cars in my yard, wonder whith one will float the best, after all once they are up off the water shape doesnt matter.

  • what about recording that with image stabilizer...

  • @Bichoicho this is YouTube not some high class television production. But you new that already and still had to comment

didn't you. why not complain about the music why your at it? or maybe someone spelling or grammar, why stop their?

  • At the end of Youtube "Hydrofoil Dreamin" there is a shot of Talaria in a hoist with its foils retracted for trailering

  • that must really great on gas!

  • you modified the trailer too ???

  • @couz650

Yes, the aft trailer rollers are raised about 1' so that the aft foil/outdrive has enough road clearance. When hauling out the raised aft rollers center the boat better on the trailer.

  • Dear Mr. Larson:

You are having so much fun with this thing that I am changing color :>! H-foils and Hovers are what I've wanted to do for years! Thanks for sharing - V|S

  • no with less hp you can drive faster

  • pointless only does 39 mph!

  • super smoothe riding

  • nice

  • yeah real stable I imagine....hehehe

  • I bet it even gets good fuel mileage to, for a boat.

  • That looks like a Bayliner 2252

  • Compared to the standard oepration of this boat without the hydrofoils, this boat must SIP fuel. What do the hydrofoils do for the fuel economy?

  • I was thinking the same thing

  • 'Now I bet that boat can't even go in 8 feet of water lol

  • the boat is really cool and all for lakes and stuff

but what if you take it to open sea with medium waves...? i mean since the drive shaft and propeller are so low... you can't "fly" gotta drive slow... so i guess you're fucked unless you can also turn of this hoovering stuff somehow and drive it normally

  • For long waves the boat flys up and over as would a planing boat . For short waves it flys through up to about 4' waves. If you have short chop of more than 4' on can moter on the hull, however it is more stable because of the foils underwater.

  • It's not really one-of-a-kind. :P

I saw a boat on my lake with one.

  • what kind of drive is e using?

  • A Volvo 280 extended 29"

  • What happens when a wave comes along?

  • 'he came from a family of boat builders'

So why did he work at boeing?!

Although i have to admit that this would be a good feature to have on my boat.

  • so gonna make me one

  • cool

  • BaJa SON!!!!!!!!!!

  • haha this is awesome. how much did that cost to lift a boat lol?

  • Bayliners are probablly top5 worst boat ever made..lol.

  • why? not arguing, i just want to know why:P

  • So basically 39mph is "wakeless speed" ha ha ha ha ha!!!

  • Very very cool. That takes some balls and I bet it turns heads.

  • That is very, very cool.

  • Very cool but What happens in 2 meters of swell???

  • If it is a swell, that is, long wave length, it follows the wave surface, up and over, any size. If it is short wave length, it goes through it, with a splash.

  • Finally a cool Bayliner, I prefer Sailboats but

    Hydrofoils are cool!

  • Check out a Moth skiff.

  • What is the benefit of this?

Bayliner is the #1 selling boat in the world because they are cheap boats, has nothing to do with quality. BTW, Baja is owned by Reggie Fountain, Brunswick sold the line last year.

  • Top speed 34 knots. It has a standard Volvo 280 outdrive extended downward 29 inches. Its mass is 162 slugs (5200 pounds).

  • Wow ! What kind of power, engine drives this ? That's a big boat.

  • 200HP

  • Only 200 HP ? Is it the prop, gearing, Luck ? I'm simple, but that's a lot of mass to lift ? Wow, is still the word. I didn't see the top ground/water speed. Looks fun.

  • This could be cool if it was something other than a Bayliner, the biggest piece of garbage to ever hit the water.

  • Thats funny Because Bayliner is the #1 selling boat in the world! And they are owned by Brunswick the same company that ownes hmm Sea ray ,Mercury motors, Baja, Maxum, Boston whaler sowhen you make a comment atleast have some back up todays bayliner same construction as a Sea Ray.

  • Thats funny , because sea ray is garbage too. Dont really care who owns the company that manufactures the boats. Bayliner and Boston whaler are built nothing alike. Thats like saying a Scion is the samething as a lexus.

  • What is you're favorite kind of music to listen to?

  • Like anybody would experiment like this on an expensive boat. hell no.

  • he retired from boeing he could do this with a donzi if he wanted to lol

  • where can i buy

  • In Seattle Washington

  • Cool! Drive... Uhm, I mean FLY by wire in a boat, nice!

  • so only the prop is in the water and the front foil - is there a foil at the stern also? amazing to generate enough lift to get that bayliner airborne!

  • Yes there is a foil in the stern, 8' span, 1' cord. Details of the design can be seen by googling "Talaria IV Harry Larsen Hydrofoilat"

  • SOUNDS LIKE PORNO MUSIC!

  • fly baby fly !!!

  • great for rivers and shallow inlets (you just can't stop). looks great fun and like you did a v good job but does it need more power to plane (probably another term for it) and also what is the thing that looks like a rod sticking out of the front foil for (does it adjust foil angle)?

  • 0:59 it tells you what it is

  • Its like putting wings on a Winnebago.

  • Great skills. Well done!

  • it counld capsize like that but still COOL and FUN

  • w00t!!!

  • lol bayliner uggh

  • hey its pretty amazing

  • This shows admirable skills and good engineering for the simple fun. Who cares if it saves gas! It is unique and different, and that alone seems worth the effort. ( ground effect next?) . Have you considered air injection in the foil to control lift through cavitation? I think the Boeing Hydrofoils I saw in Hong Kong in the 80s used this concept. May be not needed on a small boat, but what a smooth ride it would be! A little accelerometer, spectral analysis of the waves, and adaptive feedback..

  • Thats cool, but not normal.

  • All that work.. Did it gain any performance?

  • Speed: Talaria is about 25% faster on its foils than it was before the conversion using the same engine/fuel. Of coarse, such a speed increase could be realized far more easily by adding HP. Ride: The primary merit of a submerged foil hydrofoil is its smooth ride in waves. Unlike a planing boat you don't have to slow down in waves up to 3'. Thus the utility of the boat in getting to a destinationor just joy riding, particularly in bad weather/waves, is far greater.

  • Shaday's "Smooth Operator" would have been a more appropriate music bed. Beautiful boat and video!!

  • HOly shit shakey

  • Bayliner.Possibly the worst boat ever made.

  • Pretty sure it said Bayliner right in the title. How did you get this far?

  • You are an idiot.... Best bang for your buck. Fuck yourself. :)
