If I'm not mistaken, I think your statement just attempted to reduce the reductionist ... I would love to hear your take on how you see it over your take on how he sees it. Peace.
Scripture cannot be just "right brain" because it also deals with proposition and exposition of the meta-narrative. (e.g. Romans, Galatians, etc) Miller here as most other Emergent types are being unjustifiably reactionary in his assertion.
In addition, it's folly to say our culture is just "left brain." A lot of people see no use in getting into details and nuances over philosophical or theological issues.
Absolutely his statement, in that sound bite, is too restrictive. Nothing (nor anyone) is purely left or right brain. I believe he also said "dominant". He also talks about culture being driven by left brain. I understand him to say that the literary approach of the Bible is likely to NOT be picked up by this culture. Peace.
Dominant according to whom? What literary approach? Where is he getting these assumptions? The Bible is not going to be ignored by this culture because of a preferential left/right brain tendency.
I don't really care about all your ridiculous politics (left/right whatever! I agree and would say the Bible is art too! God created art! The Bible is extremely intelligent and well written, it reveals to us so many things!
but human beings are sloppy and we do complicate life. into that, God speaks throught Scripture and engages the sloppinesss and complications. nothing about the lives of predominant Biblioal characters in need of redemption was anything but sloppy and complicated. miller reminds us of that. i give him a "way to go!"
The Bible is a piece of art? It is the Word of God. This man is a liar, deceiving and being deceived, ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. It is sad that this man is essentially worshiped by "Christian" America, a man whose house is built on sand. Another descent into apostasy. Very sad how many are misled by this man; I fear for him on judgment day for his mockery of our Lord. Do not be deceived, Christians!
I don't think you're really listening to him. There is no heresy in what he's saying. You hear art or "sloppy" and think he means not inerrant. That's not what he's saying. He's talking about how we approach the text.
I don't believe he mocks God. I sense his love for Christ in every word he says. And I greatly prefer his calm sincerity to those men on evangelical networks who run up and down the stage, scream and cry, and say things in "tongues" that mean absolutely nothing to me.
I don't know how Jesus had any truth at all -- not being postmodern and all. I remember now, He did tell his followers to be relative... Except, not.
thank God you two are the smart clever ones. we'd all be lost without people like you, just like we'd be lost without the pharisees and the crusades...
Jesus made a mockery of the religious leaders in his day, the most pious of people(the ones who "had it right" so to speak)...the hands that wrote the Old Testament. Jesus even called them sons of the devil....pretty intense stuff.
very postmodern view of truth and very relative. Truth and meaning is what corresponds to the subject in context of the sentence, paragraph and writing as a whole.
The funny thing is that to deny the correspondence view of truth is really a contradiction, as you want the person reading to apply the information you write to the context of the sentence. Meaning the information corresponds to teh subject you are talking about, otherwise how can we even get meaning?
The conference blog says there's a place on youtube where you can watch the videos from the film festival. I've been looking, but can't find them. Please post the link.
you can tell he's a writer. he can't communicate without moving his hand all sorta ways. :-) i love his books - thanks for posting.

Miller is being extremely reductionistic by saying that this culture is "left-brain" and that Scripture is "right-brain."

My belief is that scripture is 'GOD Breathed' ... which would make it very right-brained.
Western Society (not individuals) is predominantly left-brained .... consider education system, infrastructure, government etc.
Personally, Miller 'speaks to me' both in his books and in his public appearances. That is a personal preference.
Let's focus on the bottom line - love GOD above all things and love thy neighbour .... all the rest is padding ;)
Blessings!
