Just because you have Prior Plans and Structure to musical sets does not mean there isn't exploration/ improvisation within the contexts of those structures. I think what sets TMV apart from other bands is being able to stretch those lines within structure. For anyone who has seen them multiple times, there is no debating each show is different with plenty of improvisation.
they dont really have a reason for song titles...they just go like "this sounds good" lets make it the song title....they have never been to "Agadez" for example.
The beauty of it was the show started just as the sun started to dip down... so it started in the light and ended with a 25+ minute version of Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus in the dark.
WTF are you talking about is this really a reply to my comment? and yes they way have a jam vibe on the albums hence 7-13 minute tracks.. yah i agree everything on deloused is ballin as fuck as well as Frances the Mute and Amputechture. Cedric is ging down hill with his taste for vocal production with silly whiny overdubs but at least bedlam rocked my ass off (except tournquet man which is garbage.) This album failed to grab me .... cotapaxi is the shit and teflon is growing on me rest=garbage
the band stopped taking acid after Amputechture. I'd say Octahedron is a return to form after the The Bedlam In Goliath. I never really liked it very much personally - although there some amazing performances on that record, namely Thomas.
actually. I watched an interview with omar FROM bonnarroo.. he explained that 90 percent of the "improv" you hear is stuff they have planned out. For future songs or whatever. I thought they improvised a lot more guess not.
Yeah, I have heard them say that too, but it sounds like improv. It certainly does not sound as "complete" as the stuff lifted of the album directly. So isn't that all that matters. It Still sounds like jam, even if there is a loose sructure.
Its just my personal opinion, but after watching a whole concert yesreday, I thought it had moments where it went too far & the audience looked bored. Just my opinion.
I've talked with the guys, they improv a lot at their normal shows, not at festivals. They once improvised for 45 mins. at a show I went to in '05. They would have released that stuff by now, and Omar told me after the show they were playing improv.
What were they looking at

the intro in this video is basically the end of their live act of roulette dares, so i guess they just lead it into cotopaxi

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This is the only real Mars Volta song on their new album.

that was an intelligent comment.....

Thanks i know.
Fittygitty 2 years ago
you know wrong.
i thought that intro sucked arse....
Now... "Sun Et Lumeire" thats a f**king intro. It compliments the actual song, and leads up to it ever so sexily.
I think they push the "jam band-y" shit too far live. Their albums don't have that vibe at all. Regardless of what they would like to think.

Yes it was...
You said; "Thanks i know" in response to "they shoulda put this opening in the recorded version" right?....
and i said... "You know wrong".
As in, I don't agree that it should be part of the studio version. That's all.
The rest is just a rant.... granted.

I wasnt a huge fan of Octahedron when I first heard it but after listening to the album a handful of times it stacks up with the albums.
tusk333656 2 years ago
Bedlam sounded like a peak in drug usage; Octahedron just sounds like the aftereffects, when they're too brain damaged to have the same energy
