  • Now it's 2010 and the US Empire is sinking fast towards exactly that of what recently hit Greece (tiny, tiny empire) - but it will be MUCH WORSE here in the USA. Obama was groomed in the Alinsky method - the ends justify the means - this is why Obama has used every 'mafia' method to bypass the rule of law and has denied us of democracy, our freedoms and liberties. Wake up Americans! And I could care less what (dividing) side you are on!!

  • Wow!

  • PBS and Moyers: the best in broadcasting today!

  • American empire? More like American umpire

  • what do you mean?

  • Yep.

Prosecute all the "bad apple" trailer trash enlisted class.

But PARDON officers and the Ivy League villains...

  • Psychology of an Empire reminds me of the song "Tin Soldier"

  • Congratulations guys for your insight and self criticism.

  • amen.

  • JixMa great points..After WW2 things became very complicated Russia wanted reperation for damages caused by Germany and America saw that there would be no way for Germany pay Russia and the conflict grows from there England(churchill)made a gesture twords Russia but was again turned down but america desided to help fund rebuilding Germany and of course that pisses of Russia even more and then they take jews that were left and put them in the Middle East Intresting.

  • It's good to see a real conversation on this issue. Well it is PBS after all. Speaking of which I think I need to give my local station some money.

  • American Empire? Gee, what a shock. What else is new? The USA IS indeed an empire nowadays. In my opinion, this happened post WWII. After the USA got The Bomb, it felt invulnerable and began pushing its weight around the world. It never disarmed after WWI. Truman felt it was better to just stay armed all the time and on a war footing and subsequent presidents have followed suit - except for Eisenhower who warned the country about the military-Industrial-congressional complex.

  • [2] Further on this point of empire, the USA has 725 military bases in 130 countries around the world.

With the huge expenditure in advanced weaponry, this feeling of invincibility & a feeling of superiority, has bred a mindset of "the world is ours". Americans have lost all sense of the rule of law & now through pure hegemony, just do what they want & subjugate, torture & kill at will. The funny thing is that they say they're against all these bad things, but do them all the same on the sly.

  • [3] Oops! I typed, "It never disarmed after WWI." I meant to type "WWII", World War II, not Word War I. Truman, after World War II, never disarmed the U.S. military and returned to a pre-war status. This was due to the threat the Soviet Union posed to Western Europe. But then, the military-Industrial-congressional complex took control of the American psyche and war and the armaments industry became good for business.

  • it started in 1898- spanish american war.
