Man, noone gives the cinematographer any credit for the acclaim the movie has. This scene has two amazing shots (the birds-eye-view crane shot over the roof edge and the panning shot of everyone drinking beer). It's beautiful how Deakins captured the moment and tells a story through his camera.
You should see the movie called Bingo because it has a storyline similar to Shawshank Redemption because that movie "Bingo" has one man and his dog escaping the prison, trying to avoid lights at night in exercise yard!
And as for Jason, he spend the night hunkered in a corner of the night club, a strange little smile on his face, watching Stacy, Rachel, and Laura drink his beer..........
I also think John Cusack, Harrison Ford should be in this movie playing unnamed prisoners alongside Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman playing Andy Dufrense and Red
There's a lot of Drama out there that's depressing. Especially today since they're running out of good ideas for movies. But this is one movie that I could watch all the way through without being depressed. Both adults and teens enjoy this film. I think that's very cool. Why can't they make movies like this anymore? Lol.
He wouldn't have to gift the 35K. His brothers estate would be taxed first and his inheritance wouldn't be taxed. Beneficiaries of an estate are never taxed.
@berkeleyoverdrive I was digging through the shelves at work one day and came across this book (originally one of the stories in the book Four Seasons) and I read the whole story that day. Yeah thats right I was at work! It was a great story and the movie is pretty much follows the book exactly, except for the original Reds who was a white guy. See if you can find the book in it's original form and give it a read.
My favourite quote from this part of the movie would have to be" We could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We are lords of all creations", compared to my favourite quote "Alcatraz is not like any other prison in the United States. Here, every inmate is CONFINED ALONE" in Escape From Alcatraz movie!
hey... Icy cold bohema style beer... jk... maybe... xD ... I'm thinking about... a pack of smokes and Icy cold bohema style beer alittle... we'll see... tty video man!... hey... I bet I could have just one anyway... : ) ( yeah right )
This film lost all the Academy Awards to that damned Forrest Gump... I can't believe that... This film is life-affirming, gives me hope and never fails to tear me up at the end. Simply fucking beautiful.
@Pellefather While this is my personal favourite film, I think Forest Gump was a decent film to lose to. (I still think Shawshank should have won, I just hold that Forest is also a very good film)
@MandrakePFJ Forest Gump is brilliant, believe me, but The Shawshank Redemption is such an emotional journey for me :) It really makes me feel like I've never felt before when watching a movie.
@XxRippl3nTmEXx this what I'm doing 2 day so... then m gonna try to... get um my... life on track... hlolz!... awesome ending on this vid... ( great )
This is my personal favourite film of all time, and this is my favourite scene. I'm not sure why, but something just resonates with me when he say's "We were the lords of all creation" This is the bit I always remember, where the music, camera and voicover just come together and for a short time make a pure 'good' feeling.
The Captain of the Guard is one of my favorite charcters of all time. This scene also incapsulates the difference between the old-time convict and the ass drooping losers called inmates; one majestic in a sense; the other utterly deserving of the very worst possible.
@NightStreet50 That's why he was so GOOD! He was a Douche You love to Hate. Personally how he acts as a villain in this scene is how I act when I get told i'm going to be the villain.
@libville Thank you my friend, actually it's three years since I posted it on youtube now ;) Even tough I was just a kid when I first saw this film I understood it very well, and never before have I felt so good ín my life as I did after seeing this. "Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free", sure a very inspirational quote ;)
Although Tim Robbins is a galactic douchebag this is by far one of the best movies ever made. The fact that Tom fucking Hanks won the best actor award over Morgan Freeman in this for Forest Hump still pisses me off to this day.
Hey everyone, I've made a website about the Shawshank Prison and other interesting facts about the movie. The site is shawshankprison . c o m if anyone is interested. Cheers!
1994 was a great filmyear. It had Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King and The Shawshank Redemption. But The Shawshank Redemption beats all of them.

@Bloodpiggy you must be the only person ever to think its predictable.Everyone is entitled to an opinion and with all due respect ,my opinion is that your opinion is total shit and belongs to no one but you.
Really? The obvious clues? The ridiculously overwrought script?
Go watch some Bresson, uneducated morons always think this movie is some sort of amazing spectacle when in reality it simply scratches the surfaces of what could possibly make a film great. Its themes are juvenile and are explored in a juvenile fashion, the ending is far too sentimental and as I mentioned before, predictable.
Little to not character development occurs, yet it isn't a character study, so there's no excuse.
@BloodPigggy you probably like to have the opposing point of view about a lot of things but this film still remains top of most charts based on peoples favourite films. If everything was identical to real life, film would bore the arse off you.I personaly dont know how Forest Gump is rated as a classic when to me that's a sentimental boredom fest.
I didn't even say anything regarding realism or "true to life" elements, hell, Jodorowsky and Tarkovsky are two of my favorite directors and they tend to go for the dream-like and surreal slant.
The fact is that this film is derivative and is simply a collection of film tropes and pieces collected from ages of classic film to the utmost degree, it doesn't step out of the bounds of regular film so it's merely good since it does absolutely nothing to stand out.
@RebelGuy10100 Because at the time of its release, it wasn't well known like Forrest Gump or Pulp Fiction. It bombed at the box office, and didn't gain steam until after its release on VHS. It eventually went on to become the most rented film of 1994.
@BloodPigggy How can you say that the ending is predictable? It actually had me guessing on how Andy was going to get out of there and if he would ever get out of there. And the character's having no character development? Okay, I've give you one example. Did you see the difference between Red at the beginning of the movie and at the end? At the beginning and throughout the movie, he thought he wouldn't make it on the "outside", but Andy gave him hope and changed his life at the end.
Best movie ever made my ass, it took this film more than 2 hours to do what something like Come and See would do in its first twenty minutes, and then do it over and over for the whole 3 hours of the film.
It's a good movie, but it's predictable and sentimental.
What? Come and See is a miserable movie! How can you even compare these movies? When I finished Shawshank, I felt hopeful, alive! When I finished Come and See I felt violated and empty.
That movie is a brutal, heartless, and nihilistic. If you've seen it once, then there's no denying you'll be affected by it.
If, however, you've revisited it on more than one occasion, then you may just be a twisted voyeur who likes seeing people get raped, maimed, and burned alive.
I've seen a lot of comments here that say they don't make movies like this anymore. I think what most people mean are movies with heart and soul. Most Hollywood movies don't have it, folks. I'd say watch more independent films or foreign films, but a hand full of Hollywood movies have heart, just search for them and you'll find them. Most of the Oscar Best Picture Winners have them, for example - Rain Man.
Are you fucking kidding me? Forrest Gump is a classic and the one of the best movies ever. Whats next, you gonna say Pearl Harbor was better than Forrest Gump
i'm not gonna lie and say Forrest Gump was bad, I liked it very much, but I also not gonna lie and say The Shawshank Redemption was worse then Forrest Gump, I think The Shawshank Redemption was WAY better then FG. If I were to chose the winners for the Oscar, I would want this film to win BEST PICTURE!
I wish someone could edit in "Barney Fife" preaching one of his famous loud speeches to the inmates, like he did on the Andy Griffith Show. Would certainly be interesting!
"...We were the Lords of all Creation.." What an awesome film. I'd agree with Cinder90 - the best film ever made. Beautifully written and acted with fabulous music. A true masterpiece and a cinematic work of art.
Man, noone gives the cinematographer any credit for the acclaim the movie has. This scene has two amazing shots (the birds-eye-view crane shot over the roof edge and the panning shot of everyone drinking beer). It's beautiful how Deakins captured the moment and tells a story through his camera.

Movies like this make me go out on a limb and say that the 90's was the second golden age of film.

I wouldn't describe this film as the best ever made. But it definitely was superior to Forrest Gump, one of the worst movies ever made!
cutis1000 2 years ago
Are you fucking kidding me? Forrest Gump is a classic and the one of the best movies ever. Whats next, you gonna say Pearl Harbor was better than Forrest Gump

i'm not gonna lie and say Forrest Gump was bad, I liked it very much, but I also not gonna lie and say The Shawshank Redemption was worse then Forrest Gump, I think The Shawshank Redemption was WAY better then FG. If I were to chose the winners for the Oscar, I would want this film to win BEST PICTURE!

This was nominated for 7 awards, but won none, because of that shit "Forest Gump," which also came out.
