I live in Winnipeg and I can honestly say that everyone of us that was born here have a love/hate relationship with this city. I hate it, but at the same time, i wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
But this song illustrates the common concerns of metro city living, I think what John Sampson's song is saying can be applied to any city. Which is why I think people all across the world understand and love this song as much as anyone from the Peg.
Yeah, Winnipeg is a pile o' shit. I have only been living in Montreal for three months, and I can positively say that I am not looking forward to moving back to Winnipeg for summer holidays.

Note where the weakerthans are from and accept that this is tongue in cheek for all the people (I'm guessing very young people) saying they're going to kill them and what not. I've lived in Winnipeg and I think it's depressing but it has character and culture that's lacking in most Canadian cities.
the jets were probably THE best team in the WORLD (literally) before they joined the NHL when the would have exhibition games against NHL teams they would stomp them...but NHL teams owned rights to most of the players on Winnipeg so when they did join they lost most of them.
It's all true though. Winnipeg does suck, it's dark, depressing, full of poverty and misery. As the famous sign entering into Winnipeg says "Winnipeg: We were born here, what's your excuse?"

One Great City!"
