  • StarTech NIC for a server? At least get an Intel Pro

  • Can you connect the 4 gigabit ports of the card onto a router or switch, and have increased transfer speed??

  • If this is a File Server I really recommend FreeNAS, you definitely will get great performance, especially if you used that SSD with ZFS (As l2arc).

Otherwise that SSD is essentially only being used when booting (where Random IO access isn't as important, and this is where an SSD shines). honestly you aren't fully utilizing your hardware by using windows. Not hating just wanted to bring that to your attention.

  • thanks so much for the info on the raid controller! some of us in the heartland of America really love your videos, so keep up the good work!

  • When you say 100 meg a second, do you mean megabits per second (bits per second being the standard unit for bandwidth) or megabytes per second (what Windows probably shows)? The expected performance of NAS seems to vary depending on the expertise of the user e.g. Drobo users think 100mbps is fast for a USB DAS, while my own NAS reads at about 2.8gbps locally (dd read to /dev/null), bottlenecked by 2x gigabit NICs in LAGG.

  • @ghelyar Im getting 109MB/s (bytes) both ways minimum over a single gigabit line with 2 paired off and set to share both cables for up and down not just one in one out I can get 190MB/s both ways.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms this is roughly the limit for gigabit and is what I would expect from a functioning RAID card. I was asking about the "100 meg" of the onboard RAID from the start of the video, to see just how bad it was to start with.

Link aggregation (lagg) is fun but has some limits and different modes are useful in different situations. In general one TCP stream will only go through one link, for example, even if the other is unused.

  • @ghelyar ahhh it was MB. with the raid card it was over 1GB/s but that could have been cache, I should really have overloaded it but Ive never felt any slow down in day to day use

  • make shorter videos

  • If anyone is going to use these Samsung F4 HD204UI drives as well, don't forget to update your firmware. A bug in the previous version would cause data loss under certain circumstances. Samsung silently put an update up on their site.

Just create a bootable USB drive, put the update on it and run it. You can leave all your drives connected, it will only update the HD204UI drives.

  • Hi Tom, so im thinking of somthing like this for my home too but having trouble with how its all setup... I mean, do this replace the router?? do I plug all pc's directly into this thing or does it still need to go through the router?? oh and why 4 ports on network card?? sorry if im being noob... if anyone else can help it would be much apreciated... again sorry for the noobness

  • @Sole4sho if you want to spend this much money on a server you deffo need to read up on some basic networking dude. Like network switches for example ;)

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms ok, thanx for the advice... so network switches :)

  • @Sole4sho get 2 gigabit network ports, either both on the motherboard, one onboard and one on its own card, or both on their own card. Intel cards are good. Using Cat6 cable, plug your cable modem or adsl gateway into one port and your gigabit switch into another, and boot it into pfsense, smoothwall or something similar. You could also get a wireless adapter for it and put that in its own zone to manage wireless users separately, but that's optional.

  • @ghelyar thanks for the advise, very very helpful and clear explination... thankyou

  • Hmmm, Can anyone tell me what would be right for a Computer to host Multiple Gaming Servers? Would this do the job?

  • Is that CPU cooler pretty decent? I may just stick with a stock AMD heatsink. Not going to overclock or anything.

  • W2K8 is balls for port bundling. debian/centos/freebsd is best.

    Read wikipedia -> /Link_aggregation

Also you should have bought intel 4 port gig cards they are the way to go for this sort of thing (affordable too).

  • sorry to be a noob but why does your network card need 4 ports?

  • You must put a PCI-fan that blow air vertically upwards on the the Adaptec heatsink just in the available PCI slot below the card; because this card heat sink will overheat up to 70 degrees Celsius if not actively cooled or put on a real server chassis with a lot of air flow.

  • is there any reason you couldn't use win 7 instead of server 2008? Ihave s similar build in mind

  • you look alot like Jake Gyllenhaal

  • @Kivipallur92 Kinda wish I was a bit more like Jake Gyllenhaal !!!

  • Hey, quite like your Server :)

But, you could mention, that when you benchmark your Speed with a Chunk of 10 or 100MB, you measure the Speed of the Raid Cache(which is 512MB you said)

You will have "real" HDD/raid Speeds when you go over the Size of the cache(like 1Gig Setting).

Non the less, cache is a big bonus for real world settings!

    Regards from Germany ;)

  • Why would you need a WOW storage server? Sry if a newbie question, but thats a lot of space.

  • @HSEesfofun It's because Hayley's forum name is HayleyWow, he states in the first video not to confuse it with World of Warcraft ;-)

  • I got my new rig from newegg today MF good day two day

  • What are "stonking" speeds =P haha

  • I like your worklog. I am planning to do raid too with the same raid card. Could you do a review on adaptec 5805 raid card? Is samsung spinpoint f4 better than western digital re4?

Have you tried raid 50 with card?

  • I've read some stuff on the interwebs about the risk of getting errors when rebuilding a raid5/6 array, with 2tb drives, being quite high. Whats your view on this, Tom? (im assuming you're not worried; otherwise you wouldnt have chosen raid6)

  • Congratulations on your excellent disk I/O performance!

How will you obtain Athlon II x4 635? It's already out of stock in my city...

  • @charray Got it from AMD dude. ;)

  • Nerd baking :) yum yum

  • Nerd baking :) yum yum

  • u shud have put ubuntu server on it

  • Hi tom nice server mate she should be really happy. It will be great to see you building a custom rig again. Missed all that of late.

  • This made me happy . . . :D

  • @Tom, will we see more bike videos towards the summer? :D

  • @jules2k7 I have built a nice one actually dude.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms Can't wait to see it! :p Been thinking about getting a proper DH bike for the summer, so expensive though :/

  • @jules2k7 this is a hardtail. My marin is a play bike not DH. Ive not ridden DH for a few years as I dont have time to keep fit enough now. too much time sat on a chair rather than a sadle!

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms lol! I know the feeling, cant wait for the summer to get out and about again! You built many bikes? Ive built a few PCs, but building a bike is on a completely different level for me lol.

  • @jules2k7 Pretty much every bike Ive owned Ive built. The marin was the first one in ages I bought complete. Then I upgraded loads on it!

  • which of these upgrade paths do you approve of tim?

    -wait to see bulldozer?

    -wait till sandy is fixed?

    -get a 1366 system

    -or just generally wait?

    thanks great shows :)

  • @jamesripper buy now and enjoy now. Sandy is ok and they will replace everything anyways.

  • Nice to hear that you are building a system again! :) Looking forward to it!

  • AWSOME!

Turn on the "CC" button for speech text and look and see what google translate thinkt ttl is saying :D

    GREAT FUN! must try

  • Okay so why have 4 ports for internet?

  • @Hokrollo1 I explain that in the video if you watch it :p

Network parts are not just for the internet dude ;)

  • You finally got this finished. Been so long. Nice speeds. Did you get your keyrings sorted?

  • 0 dislikes! congratz!

  • @SeanBondWBB dont jinx it!

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms too late... someone disliked it. (No it wasnt me)

  • That +1 GIG disk transfer speed seems to be running almost completely in the RAID controller's cache.... (100 MB test file < 512 MB Cache RAM ???)

  • TTL, about that load-balancing thingy, unfortunately you'll never get more than 1 Gbit/s between the server and a (1) client. The load-balancing will work if you're connecting with multiple clients but it'll never be perfect load-balancing.

  • @TheBilleman Ive currently got my server and main rig set up doing 195MB/s transfers dude. Thats 2 gigabit lines paired off and all the routing features in 2008R2 set up.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms I stand corrected then. Life isn't fair :P..... Normally in networking the pairing load-balances over MAC address pairs or IP Addresses/ports. Must be something fancy going on there. You're the man :>

  • next up MB baking!

  • Wow, I'm so glad you made this video, I'm going to through a storage server for my dad to put all our home video on so he can stream them to the TV. I was going to use the on board raid from Asus but I'll get a card now. I was slightly skeptical about the on board anyway. Thanks a lot dude =)

  • bits power fittings? :D Can't wait to see Haley's rig, keep us posted with video's and I look forward to you doing some more builds tom :]

  • monsterous server build mate!

  • heya tom do you still h ave plans to do the sandy oc'ing vid?

  • I love that Knight Rider light in the case also xD

But 12 TB of hdd space wholy beeb, what u gonna store tom ?

    OC3D Porn-TV xD

  • @Snake1979xfire Movie, Games, Music, Game hosting file etc, especially with torrents you can EASILY use that

  • @Snake1979xfire its on the raid card......

  • Comment removed

  • When is the white cooler master case coming out I can't find it online or in stores in the US yet.

  • what was flashing red in the case behind you?

  • @Baker3OrDieHard the raid card dude.

  • @justpeter6 i fucking hate it when people say that, they are PERFECTLY FINE. SOME OF US LIKE LONG VIDEOS. DO NOT STOP MAKING LONG VIDEOS. That is all.

  • @consumev totally agree short videos = fail, thank you ttl.

  • @justpeter6 Don't fucking watch them, then.

  • I'd like to see a gaming benchmark on that machine. I'm betting the uber raid setup you have will munch through the GTA 4 benchmark.

  • @andrewsheldonreeves YOu know thats a server right.

  • @andrewsheldonreeves Its a server.... no high performance video card.....

  • wow as world of worldcraft?

  • @mike82y no..

  • awesome job Tom I

  • minecraft any one

  • any1 eles stream fuck up at 07:21 and thereafter? goes all staticy :(

  • @JSchwarze89 on 720p ;)

  • umm I wounder why he hasn't said anything about the i5-2500k/ i7-2600k recall?

  • @0NeedHelp Its the chipset, not the cpus.

  • @0NeedHelp was a chipset recall not CPU recall matey.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms I HATE it when people come to where i work to get replacements for sandybridge processors.... I MEAN HOW THE HELL I'M SUPPOSED TO EXPLAIN THAT THE FLAW IS ON THE CHIPSET, NOT THE CPU.....

  • @0NeedHelp

I think theres enough coverage about the situation on the web so no real need for him to comment what has not already been said.

  • Looking forwrd to the builds. of course i love all the new stuff being reviewed, but i have to admit that i do miss you going nuts on a case and some pieces of hardware. Go for it:-)

very cool erver. With the raid card aso in it, it's way out of my price range though. how come you changed to Samsungs? You didn't explain that in the video.

  • It stores World of Warcraft?

  • @scottycatman i want to know the same

  • what is the idea to have a home server ? what does it does ? thanks

  • @PcandTech what does it does? lol

  • She will be chuffed to bits now its done :)

  • Those Disk Speeds are Fast for that Setup!

  • 12TB? ...That will Only hold 10% of Tom Logan's ADULT Movie Collection! #HA!

  • Ah ok XD home server ok =)

Tom can you create a Server section at OC3D ??? woould be great people discussion their game servers, and advises an evertything. People are spending many times 800€ per month for a server and dunno waht do do with problems XD

And dont forget: Please make a video on Dual channel Vs triple channel ram comparison.

@Tozza86 XD I consider a diferent machine beastly server =) Very diferent.

  • It would be really cool if you could make some videos about setting up and using WHS.

  • Why do you need 4 Lan connections??

  • Why did you change to the Samsung 2TB? Didnt the WD Green 2TB not perform aswell??

  • Any reason for not putting the network card in the top pcie x1 slot? Seems a bit of a waste of a pcie x16 slot to have it where you do?

  • Beastly server! Yet another great vid TTL;)

  • lol at the world of warcraft advert

  • get your hands on a 590 just so we can see it

  • Stupid build, but ok, if she wants shiny server..

  • Why change the drives?

Also can't watch the system running without making Cylon sound effects :O

  • who is this haley ???? Are you hitting that ????

  • Great video dude! You are really getting to the point, where I want to see your next week like OC3D was a TV series. So yea, keep it on mate! Looking forward to more :)

  • Maybe you could start hosting these videos on your own server.. This shit is so slow to download. omg! :D

  • @ZeroG84 unless he had a very good internet connection, you wouldn't see any benefit from him hosting it, 9 times out of 10 it's the users internet connection that is slow, not the actual source of where you're getting said download from :)

  • @DecodeAGamer You are correct. I wasn't seriously saying that a home server via standard ISP would do for a good server to host videos.. The point of my irony-filled-comment was that EAVEN THAT would download faster than youtube has for these few weeks. :) I my self have a fearly fast connection, but waiting around for 4-6kb per second, on a 1080P video is just wrong in so many ways.

  • @ZeroG84 yeah, well I'm on BT, I haven't experienced the internet yet while on this connection.... I seriously miss Virgin Media, for the UK? Best, ISP, period.

Aslong as you're on there cable/fibre-optic services, nothing can touch it :) here in the UK anyways :P

  • @DecodeAGamer

I think virgin media is quite good, I would not look at anything else in terms of raw speed but Be*s right behind it, it has amazing latency and no freaking capping. The only thing I disagree is that Virgin media is throttling p2p and Usenet, they need to cut that out before they get as much respect as I have for be*.

  • @chaoshax14 I believe they only throttle P2P dure in the day/evening, up until 12AM, not sure when it becomes throttled again, I think it was something like 4PM.

Which I could handle, I just set my PC to start up at a specific time and turn off whenever I needed to use it.

Hopefully VM will install their services soon, I'm losing my mind :(

  • WOW meaning she is going to use it for a private world of warcraft server, cool!

  • stunner

  • I absolutely love watching these videos but how can I get them to load faster than 2 Mb/s?? I like to watch them in 1080p, and have a 30mb/s connection yet never seem to get these HD videos to load quickly at all. I heard changing the DNS server to 208.67.222.222 would speed things up, which it did but only for a few days, and now it's back to loading at a snail's pace. Any tips??

  • I wanna know what the other white case ?CoolerMaster? is around 10:30 - 10:50!

  • @m0o0oeh Cooler Master CM 690 II white edition. He did a review on it =)

  • @m0o0oeh cooler master cm 690 II advanced white edition i think he has a video about it.

  • so to put it in serious terms how much pr0n can you fit in there?

  • Noctua makes awesome stuff... but it just looks so UGLY in these white/blue builds.

  • @Delus1on77 yea i just wish they could just make there stuff with just black plastic the brown is just hard to make look good in any build.

  • @lordmat666 Plain black would rock! or black frame/white blades!!!

  • beautiful server, cant wait for the watercool rigs.

  • Nerd Baking Hahah Love it :)

  • why use an after marketcooler on a i3 ?

  • @CRAKIZGOOD its overclocked

  • just curious why you went with samsung. my own experiences haven't been good with them with three dead drives ranging from 250 gigs to 1tb. seagate has taken a massive nose dive lately also. and western digital has too much brand loyalty, i've been using hitachi with no problems....for now atleast. that could change.

  • @ShitWrangler i can't really talk, but i've read really good reviews on the spinpoint f4's...

  • blatantly full of PRONNNNZZZZZ

  • #LOL @ 5:25

  • eleventy-forth!

  • nuf said

  • neuf

  • eight faggets

  • fifth :) now I stfu..
