If this is a File Server I really recommend FreeNAS, you definitely will get great performance, especially if you used that SSD with ZFS (As l2arc).
Otherwise that SSD is essentially only being used when booting (where Random IO access isn't as important, and this is where an SSD shines). honestly you aren't fully utilizing your hardware by using windows. Not hating just wanted to bring that to your attention.
When you say 100 meg a second, do you mean megabits per second (bits per second being the standard unit for bandwidth) or megabytes per second (what Windows probably shows)? The expected performance of NAS seems to vary depending on the expertise of the user e.g. Drobo users think 100mbps is fast for a USB DAS, while my own NAS reads at about 2.8gbps locally (dd read to /dev/null), bottlenecked by 2x gigabit NICs in LAGG.
@ghelyar Im getting 109MB/s (bytes) both ways minimum over a single gigabit line with 2 paired off and set to share both cables for up and down not just one in one out I can get 190MB/s both ways.
@TimeToLiveCustoms this is roughly the limit for gigabit and is what I would expect from a functioning RAID card. I was asking about the "100 meg" of the onboard RAID from the start of the video, to see just how bad it was to start with.
Link aggregation (lagg) is fun but has some limits and different modes are useful in different situations. In general one TCP stream will only go through one link, for example, even if the other is unused.
@ghelyar ahhh it was MB. with the raid card it was over 1GB/s but that could have been cache, I should really have overloaded it but Ive never felt any slow down in day to day use
If anyone is going to use these Samsung F4 HD204UI drives as well, don't forget to update your firmware. A bug in the previous version would cause data loss under certain circumstances. Samsung silently put an update up on their site.
Just create a bootable USB drive, put the update on it and run it. You can leave all your drives connected, it will only update the HD204UI drives.
Hi Tom, so im thinking of somthing like this for my home too but having trouble with how its all setup... I mean, do this replace the router?? do I plug all pc's directly into this thing or does it still need to go through the router?? oh and why 4 ports on network card?? sorry if im being noob... if anyone else can help it would be much apreciated... again sorry for the noobness
@Sole4sho if you want to spend this much money on a server you deffo need to read up on some basic networking dude. Like network switches for example ;)
@Sole4sho get 2 gigabit network ports, either both on the motherboard, one onboard and one on its own card, or both on their own card. Intel cards are good. Using Cat6 cable, plug your cable modem or adsl gateway into one port and your gigabit switch into another, and boot it into pfsense, smoothwall or something similar. You could also get a wireless adapter for it and put that in its own zone to manage wireless users separately, but that's optional.
You must put a PCI-fan that blow air vertically upwards on the the Adaptec heatsink just in the available PCI slot below the card; because this card heat sink will overheat up to 70 degrees Celsius if not actively cooled or put on a real server chassis with a lot of air flow.
But, you could mention, that when you benchmark your Speed with a Chunk of 10 or 100MB, you measure the Speed of the Raid Cache(which is 512MB you said)
You will have "real" HDD/raid Speeds when you go over the Size of the cache(like 1Gig Setting).
Non the less, cache is a big bonus for real world settings!
I like your worklog. I am planning to do raid too with the same raid card. Could you do a review on adaptec 5805 raid card? Is samsung spinpoint f4 better than western digital re4?
I've read some stuff on the interwebs about the risk of getting errors when rebuilding a raid5/6 array, with 2tb drives, being quite high. Whats your view on this, Tom? (im assuming you're not worried; otherwise you wouldnt have chosen raid6)
@jules2k7 this is a hardtail. My marin is a play bike not DH. Ive not ridden DH for a few years as I dont have time to keep fit enough now. too much time sat on a chair rather than a sadle!
@TimeToLiveCustoms lol! I know the feeling, cant wait for the summer to get out and about again! You built many bikes? Ive built a few PCs, but building a bike is on a completely different level for me lol.
TTL, about that load-balancing thingy, unfortunately you'll never get more than 1 Gbit/s between the server and a (1) client. The load-balancing will work if you're connecting with multiple clients but it'll never be perfect load-balancing.
@TheBilleman Ive currently got my server and main rig set up doing 195MB/s transfers dude. Thats 2 gigabit lines paired off and all the routing features in 2008R2 set up.
@TimeToLiveCustoms I stand corrected then. Life isn't fair :P..... Normally in networking the pairing load-balances over MAC address pairs or IP Addresses/ports. Must be something fancy going on there. You're the man :>
Wow, I'm so glad you made this video, I'm going to through a storage server for my dad to put all our home video on so he can stream them to the TV. I was going to use the on board raid from Asus but I'll get a card now. I was slightly skeptical about the on board anyway. Thanks a lot dude =)

@TimeToLiveCustoms I HATE it when people come to where i work to get replacements for sandybridge processors.... I MEAN HOW THE HELL I'M SUPPOSED TO EXPLAIN THAT THE FLAW IS ON THE CHIPSET, NOT THE CPU.....

very cool erver. With the raid card aso in it, it's way out of my price range though. how come you changed to Samsungs? You didn't explain that in the video.
Tom can you create a Server section at OC3D ??? woould be great people discussion their game servers, and advises an evertything. People are spending many times 800€ per month for a server and dunno waht do do with problems XD

Great video dude! You are really getting to the point, where I want to see your next week like OC3D was a TV series. So yea, keep it on mate! Looking forward to more :)

@DecodeAGamer You are correct. I wasn't seriously saying that a home server via standard ISP would do for a good server to host videos.. The point of my irony-filled-comment was that EAVEN THAT would download faster than youtube has for these few weeks. :) I my self have a fearly fast connection, but waiting around for 4-6kb per second, on a 1080P video is just wrong in so many ways.
@ZeroG84 yeah, well I'm on BT, I haven't experienced the internet yet while on this connection.... I seriously miss Virgin Media, for the UK? Best, ISP, period.
Aslong as you're on there cable/fibre-optic services, nothing can touch it :) here in the UK anyways :P
I think virgin media is quite good, I would not look at anything else in terms of raw speed but Be*s right behind it, it has amazing latency and no freaking capping. The only thing I disagree is that Virgin media is throttling p2p and Usenet, they need to cut that out before they get as much respect as I have for be*.
@chaoshax14 I believe they only throttle P2P dure in the day/evening, up until 12AM, not sure when it becomes throttled again, I think it was something like 4PM.
Which I could handle, I just set my PC to start up at a specific time and turn off whenever I needed to use it.
Hopefully VM will install their services soon, I'm losing my mind :(
I absolutely love watching these videos but how can I get them to load faster than 2 Mb/s?? I like to watch them in 1080p, and have a 30mb/s connection yet never seem to get these HD videos to load quickly at all. I heard changing the DNS server to 208.67.222.222 would speed things up, which it did but only for a few days, and now it's back to loading at a snail's pace. Any tips??
just curious why you went with samsung. my own experiences haven't been good with them with three dead drives ranging from 250 gigs to 1tb. seagate has taken a massive nose dive lately also. and western digital has too much brand loyalty, i've been using hitachi with no problems....for now atleast. that could change.
