  • do you eat them

  • I live in Penrith NSW and they are a real pest here. In 14 months I have caught 322 of them. We use a caller bird and provide dry puppy food and water for them. In the suburbs you need to find out where the main roosting site is and place the trap in an open space away from the human do gooders and where the roosting IMs cannot see you. Do not go near the trap during the day or even watch from a window.

  • Your main mistake is to make the trap door LEVEL to the ground that the bird can simply walk out! From outside, make a funnel INTO the cage so that the ground of the cage is NOT level with the trap door!

  • Do you get lot's of Noisy Miner birds (the grey ones) round your way too? Do they hassle the Indian Myna's in or around the trap? I actually find the Noisy Miner much more annoying than the Indian Myna - they're just as bad IMO as they spook most other birds away. I'm trialling a PeeGee trap at home in the backyard but find the Indian Mynas get freaked out by the NMs and soon leave. There's always more of the Noisy Miner (about 5 or 6 in a pack). IMs are in 2's this time of year.

  • @gsogoz Noisey Miners are annoying. Thier other name is NATIVE MINER - their our annoying bird. Another name is SOLDIERBIRDS - they're territorial, form gangs from families or strangers working together to protect territory/food. They see your trap as food. I don't think there is much you can do - they likely keep the Indians in check. They can pester and hassle other species, but they are protected. You are not allowed to kill them or deliberately trap them.

  • @euphemus2 They (the NMs) don't go near the food, even if I put watermelon out, lol. I'm having trouble getting the IMs to hang around long enough. Do you get any Noisy Miners where you're located?

  • @gsogoz I used to live west. subs of Syd. - out over the moutains now. No Indian Miners here thank god but lots of Native Miners - not around my area: bit further up the track in the State Forrest. It sounds to me like you're smack bang in the middle of the NM's territory, that's why they're chasing off the IMs - since they don't want the food - its breeding season, their brood will still be young - they're territorial anyway but suspect they have nests nearby. BTW: nice guitar posts - v. cool!

  • @euphemus2 Thanks :D There's also Bottlebrush and Nectar trees everywhere here - not in my yard but neighbors and street) which gives the NMs the upper hand. Lot's of Rainbow Lorikeets in the backyard this time of year thanks to a big Gumtree in bloom. Too many of 'em for the NMs or IMs to bully : ) Thanks for your replies. Cheers.

  • @euphemus2 I had quite a few hang n around, knocked a few with the slingshot ,then i started feeding a pair of maggies daily 4 years ago, their still around and if a myna lands in my yard,2 seconds later a black an white torpedo comes sreaming in and chases the piece of shit off.If ur using a air rifle or slingshot and you only wing the myna let it be as it will attract other mynas who come in to investigate or help then let rip!

  • man i wish i had this trap for the spotted turtle doves...i fukn hate them along with the myna birds too...got any advise on where i can buy/make a trap suited for the spotted turtle dove? so bloody annoying those doves, everyday they just want to root n make more bloody doves, useless friggin things. please reply man?

  • I have had off and on success with this trap, depending on the whims of these pests. Does anyone actually keep a caller bird live in the holding cage for an extended period of time, as per the peegee handbook? I would like to read your comments. I don't see how this bird would be happy? After just a day in there, they do a lot of damage to their heads against the wire frame, trying to fly up and out. I put them out of their misery, as soon as it gets dark.

  • @aleoper A "caller bird" does work. Once I watched a miner fly over the trap, do a full 360 swoop, land in front of the trap and run straight in to the trap and on to the holding cage to be with the bird already inside (no stopping - stright in). After this I always tried to keep a bird in the trap. Make sure the birds have water, food, and shade and are not disturbed and they will stay in there happily for a few days. Don't leave the same bird in there for weeks - alternate them.

  • Thanks for the info. Here is a new prob. for your expertise to ponder. I have had probs. with possums eating any food they could get their paws on by sticking their heads in the feeding chamber entrance tunnels. This morn., a possum found it's way all the way into the holding chamber, ate the food in both chambers, and killed the caller bird(didn't eat it). I opened the holding chamber exit hatch and let the irate bugger find his way out, but what mods might I make to keep the possums out?

  • @aleoper Bloody possums!

The only thing I can think of is to remove the food and perhaps seal the entrances. Possums are nocturnal and mynas not. So get out there just after dark and remove the food and just before dawn put it back. Really I can't think of any other way. I'm really surprised that a possum could get through the very small entrances to the trap but if that is true I can't see any other way to stop them.. Maybe feed the possums away fromt he trap at night? Best I can do.

  • i prefer to shoot them

    i love most birds

    but mynas are pests

  • Ja,Ja,Ja,Ja........

  • another trap on the net has a mirror put in the holding cage so the bird can see itself and thinks it is another bird in the holding pen so it goes in there too, apparently its much more effective.

  • Did you kill them?

  • Hahahahaha, this is hilarious! Very well done! - I'm doing an assignment on the Mynas atm and just finding out how the traps work n stuff.

  • I admitt I have problems, but I obcess about these annoying noisy fuckers to the point were I can't relax and have to run out the front like a crazy cunt to scare them off. What must the neighbours think?I should have know the answer to my problems are on youtube.I HATE THEM,I WILL SNAP THEIR NECKS!ANNOYING CUNTS

  • lol i know i shoot the fuckers on site air rife good investment

  • @12gaugeboomers yea i agree

the mynas are evil fuckers, one bullet cures the problem

  • @nasafakedit well thats a fairly obvious answer..one bullet usually cure any problem..lol

but guna r illegal here in Australia, but i want an air rifle (BB gun or slug gun) so i can have fun shooting

    these bloody birds

  • euphemus2 where do you live man i would like some mynas so i can learn their behavior better

  • I used to live in far western sydney - now I'm in mid-west NSW (no mynas here (yet)).

It may be a little late but give putting feathers and heshen fibre in the trap - it worked for me in the nesting season - they are always on the look out for stuff for their nests.

  • euphemus2 thats a cool trap the problem is the 2 mynas that come to my place wont come near anything with metal wire within 2meters. its probably cuz i tried to catch it for so long it got smart. do you know any other way i can catch it? or will they EVENTUALLY forget and go it? dude ive tried manual traps much more less dangerous looking than your trap. just the lift cage with a stick and pull when they go in. every other bird goes in, mynas wont come within 2meters. i need help plz!!!!

  • GOOGLE "Indian_Myna_Handbookl.pdf",

    nvlandcare, PEE GEE Myna trap.

They're cluey: once they know its a trap you have to leave them alone for months before you try again. Use the PG trap - it works. Follow the rules: don't go near the trap (ANYWHERE NEAR IT - DON'T EVEN LOOK AT IT DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS!). Use the same food you're using now - leave the trap's access doors open with the food in it - then after a few weeks close the access doors. You can modify the PG to a drop door model too.

  • Anytime is the best time! Catching a female before breeding time prevents all those young birds, also just after mowing the lawn is another good time!

  • Agreed - knocking out a breeding female is a valuable thing any time.

But, breeding season is special: its when the birds begin to congregate in numbers around homes, after months spread out. Looking for food and nesting material, (I baited my trap with feathers - it caught quite a few), they're easier to catch during breeding season generally.

Also the youngsters are not learned to the danger of the trap yet and get trapped pretty easily.

And very good advice - they love a cut-lawn!

  • how do i make my back yard inviting to these birds so i can start trapping them

  • Mynas like clipped lawns & sparsely placed exotic trees (particularly pines and large palms); long grass & natives keep them away. Put out food a few weeks before placing the trap: dry dog food is good (I use BEEF Good-Os chopped into small bits, in a bowl & scattered around - use the beef one: its red (they really like red things!)) Most of all find an area that is not busy - even watching them through a window will keep them away. Place the food at night - don't let them see you.

  • ...Also - do all the work at night - don't let them see you near the trap or placing food! If you have pets - keep their food bowls empty.

In general - find a space that's open with good sight lines; stay away from the area; leave them reddidsh meaty foods; if you have a cat or dog keep it away. This is a pretty good site: GOOGLE "Indian_Myna_Handbookl.pdf"

    ABOVE ALL - PATIENCE!

  • i needa buy one of these traps bro, these fuckers are all over the place where i live.

  • Don't buy one - that's expensive. Make one its real easy and cheap. nvlandcare has the plans or google peegee myna trap.

Breeding season is now so now is a good time to get after them.

  • The Indian Myna breeding season is under way, they will not stop until may 2010.

  • I have a slight problem - I've moved to the country where there are no Mynas (yet) - so it looks like my trapping days are over.

  • one of these came into my house once. he walked in through the door into the kitchen!! so we got a spade and off with its head!

  • There are still some around - I can't say more or less (although I know for certain some will not be around any more).

My trap is not going out for at least another 40 days - maybe not until spring - I'll wait to see them start to breed again and then go after them - this time I will do things a little differently, learn from my mistakes and hopefully get many more.

  • Well mate the breeding season is over and you should find out what sort of impact your trapping has had on them in your area.

I am waiting for the right time too start trapping again.

  • Nice job, what do you do with them once you've caught them though?

  • Thanks.

After trapping they go to the big sky in the sky! They are put down by gassing and disposed of.

  • Your doing well so far keep it up.
