The background vocals, for the most part, sound dull and lifeless. Berry must have been at his wit's end. He had a lead singer who was magic both on stage and in the studio. Yet, he probably didn't have the nerve or insight not to replace the "supremes" with the andantes in studio. As Berry's success and power grew, he became more bold and took the necessary steps to take the Supremes OUT of the studio and bring in the Andates. The excuse- they supremes are on tour and busy.
Are you saying that you can't even hear the difference?
The original sound was obviously the reason that this group was so enormously successful. I guess not all of us are able to hear the specific voices and subtle nuances ... I'm sure glad I can hear it.
This song was all about Diana's lead vocal and the music of the funk brothers. The background gals added nothing. One can hear how LITTLE the 3 gals, (sorry, but I forget their names) were needed and used. it was not until Berry started to use the Andantes that the background vocals behind Ross became powerful and innovative.
To Oceanbound222, it's all about how white Diana Ross sounds and how black Mary, Florence and Cindy sound. Typical Euro-Trash, but I didn't know they were racists.
I made a filtered instrumental of back in my arms again some moths ago it worked really good because Diana is exactly in the middle and flo and mary on the sides =D it was nice to hear the funk brothers and the supremes job.
lol yes and if berry would had made more commercical for them the could had have 20 #1 hits =D
the backgroundharmonies by flo and mary were always great.
The sang together since they were little they know how to work together in a perfect way.
And the funk brothers wrote so many great and perfect songs also no wonder that the funk brother with the supremes and HDH were only able to make great songs. The had no other choice.

It's a very cool mix ... and so great hearing Mary and Flo working in perfect harmony with the incredible Motown band.
No wonder it was a number one hit!
