@Beerdrinkenredneck he couldnt have an MRI either its electromagnetic it can move the metal in yer body [ as the thing he was a 6 foot 8 menace that couldnt be killed
@Trigger730. Yes, Simpsons have been on longer but it is much cheaper to produce. If it wasn't animated it may have lasted at best, ten years.
@rjrocha66. It is sad, indeed. But, we can get our nostalgia fix right here at You Tube. We got three channels but only on clear night and the antenna had to be turned!
RIP, Mr Arness and thank your part in making Gunsmoke the success it was.
The real origin of Gunsmoke is that it was propaganda put out by the elite to justify government and brainwash the masses. Many times Matt Dillion will say "I didn't kill him, the law did." and this will be just minutes after we see him pull the trigger on his gun and shoot the person. This guy was in total denial using "the law" to justify himself being nothing more than a paid serial killer sent to enforce the status quo.
The CBS-TV version of "Gunsmoke" ran for 635 episodes, which is some 150 more than NBC-TV "Law and Order" or "The Simpsons." Network television entertainment series used to typically produce some 39 episodes per year (sometimes with summertime repeats or a summer fill-in series), but in recent decades that has dropped to usually 16-24 so it is unlikely any TV series will top the episode record set by "Gunsmoke." The CBS Radio version ran from 1952 to 1961. James Arness will be much missed.
I love that fantastic buckskin horse ol' Matt's riding at the beginning - he's beautiful! You gotta have a big horse to carry that big dude! My hero when I was a little girl - somehow I knew if I ever got in big trouble, Matt Dillon would gallop up on his buckskin horse and rescue me! :-D
I notice the "TVLand" logo at the bottom. I no longer watch TVLand. It was once my favorite, but I haven't watched in years since the added those "classics" as Roseann, Married With Children and could we forget How'd You Get So Rich, Class Reunion and of course Cougar!!!! TVLand may it R.I.P.
The opening sequence of Matt Dillon riding a horse replaced a long running sequence, where he shot someone, in a gunfight. At some point, the original opening sequence was deemed too violent for TV.
@Lurking99 They started using this intro in the 1968-1969 season. It was used until the 1971-1972 season. They started using different music with this same intro starting in the 1969-70 season. Starting with the 1972-73 season they stopped using an intro and just had the opening credits at the beginning of the show.
@Lurking99 of course I am talking about the intro at the beginning of the show where Matt is shown riding on a horse, not the opening credits shown after the first scene of the episode. They changed the opening credits too in the final season(At least in reruns they do).
This are the opening credits from the thirteenth season (1967-'68). A "teaser", setting the scene for the episode about to follow [and title] was shown at :14, inbetween both titles. Sometimes, announcer George Walsh read the opening credits in the second title sequence, always ending with, "...and starring JAMES ARNESS as 'Matt Dillon'."
@TXslabhurta: Actually, in the old radio version of "Gunsmoke", Miss Kitty's profession was downplayed even less. They made it pretty obvious that she was a madam, and that cowboys weren't taking the girls upstairs, for just a drink.
Westerns were once the predominant genre on American TV in the late 1950s.
Gunsmoke was the longest-lasting one of the bunch - it got its start on radio in 1952 and then lasted on TV from 1955 to 1975.
There has been only one network entertainment show that has even come close in longevity - "The Simpsons" is now tied with "Gunsmoke" for longevity - it's now in its 20th season.
Of course, we're not counting news shows, or "60 Minutes" (41 seasons) would be on longer than both shows combined.
What season was this taken from? 1967-68?

The man who created Gunsmoke, John Meston, should be inducted into Televisions Hall of Fame. Mr Meston was a BRILLIANT writer.

Great series, ALMOST as good as Cimarron Strip. Sorry, folks, but NOBODY in any Western can outride Stuart Whitman. NOBODY.

@Teflon65 What year did the intro change? I wonder if it was 1967 or
'68, when the INCREDIBLE Cimarron Strip was on the air. Stuart Whitman on a horse is POETRY IN MOTION.
