@iawoodsman yeah for sure, i've used candles in a dome tent before,(while ventilating of course,) in weather a bit lower than freezing, and had good enough results warming it up, so figured it might would work with this. i dont get as much snow here, but got loads of wood and leaves. cheers! :)
But, would you suffocate in there- cus of the plastic bag- i'm just wondering- or are there breathing holes or something- I plan on building my shelter exactly like this one for the winter months here in south dakotah- again- so good :) I love all your videos!
I use arctic candles in snow shelters frequently. Between a few bodies and a candle the things warm up very well (temperature differential up to 35-40 degrees C.)
As a point, I'd almost never scrape the ground bare of snow conduction will suck the heat our of you, and snow is a better insulator than frozen ground.
i also use an A-frame but with plastic tarps. There's no snow where I live in Oregon, just constant rain, which is worse. You can see my shelter and my guerrilla camping tactics as series on my channel. Come check it out!
I have allways liked this method over digging out a quinzie, although I do like the warmth of fire in a shelter. Any ideas how this could be incorperated?
If you are useing snow for an insulate you can build one fire in it, then it melts all over you.( that was a joke) Unfortunately there is no way I know to incorporate a fire with a snow shelter.
@canadianvirgil I've heard the Innuits would have just a very small flame (say the size of a candle) this would make the inner snow melt, but then freeze again, so the ceiling would be airtight, and the heat (though slowly) would build properly. Try that.
@canadianvirgil snow is a very good insulator, especially dry snow (if it snows dry snow on your packed snow shelter) so you would only need something as small as a candle flame to keep your shelter comfortably cool without it melting too quickly.
Thats slick , I need somewhere that the yo yo's won' t come and destroy something like that once I build it. I can up north but can't drive a hundred miles one way each time I am off. 5/5
What would be a good type of pad to lay on the bottom to keep a little warmer. Or would laying down a whole bunch of branches work better?

@paracordjunky The more insulation underneath you the better.

would a candle be sufficient to warm up this shelter without melting the snow? and if so would i have to worry too much about circulation? thanks :)
ChemicalMikeUK 4 months ago
@ChemicalMikeUK Yep, but you have to be very careful with an open flame in a shelter like this.

That should be plenty warm with your pup inside with you.

Nice and well built. I bet a candle would be enough to warm it.

Dig it. I've never seen one of those before. I'd have to scrape snow off about 60 acres to get enough to make one around here. heh.
Awesome stuff. Looked like the horse dog was enjoying it , too.
