i dont have to push the games down. i play all of my NES games without even pushing the game down . i just put it in and turn it on. In fact, i heard it actually hurts the pins to push the game down. but yeah, you don't have to put the game down. i don't know if it's just my console but i can't imagine why it would be.
@inoyu49 Usually you do unless someone replaced the 72-pin connector. I have an NES with a replaced 72-pin connector and I don't have to push the game down on it but my other NES I do.
I remember in the old days before internet existed, when me and my friend were trying to hack his clone so it could play more NES games, and his mom got really mad at us! God, that was a long time ago.
in 89, the Power Set was released, which came with the console, two game controlers, a NES Zapper, a Power Pad, and triple game pack containing Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet. 90, a Sports Set bundle was released, including the console, an NES Satellite infrared wireless multitap adapter, four game controllers, and a Super Spike V'Ball/Nintendo World Cup game pak. The Challenge Set included the console, two controllers, and a Super Mario Bros. 3 game pak released in 90
I didn't know orange Zappers existed, just the grey ones. My dad has a grey Zapper, and this is the first time I've ever heard of and seen an orange one. Funny.
This is a really comprehensive video of the NES history. I believe here in Australia the NES came out in 1987 and Mattel Toys were the Australian distributors, my best friend's family got a NES back then and I think they have the deluxe set because my friend told me that had ROB and Gyrpmite as well as Super Mario Bros. I never owned a NES or SNES when they were popular, but I think most people who I knew who had one had the Action Set you speak of.
actully the top loader nes does have a/v it's in the system if you mod it you can use it.....only the top loaders seem to go for crazy stupid prices soooooo moding it ...maybe not lol
you said that "nintendo didnt want parents to think it was a toy because they thought that parents wont buy toys" but the nes was released 2 years after the crash of `83 & retailers did not want to sell any thing that looked like a video game system so nintendo called it an "ETERTAINMENT SYSTEM" and marketed it as a TOY
@joshthenesnerd11 I think the fact it's called an "entertainment system" and was made to look like a VCR was to make it sound like more than just a toy don't you? VCR's weren't cheap in the mid 80's and you didn't but one just for your kids to play with. Plus the fact it came out with Rob the robot made it seem almost educational. Not to mention the Zapper and the track and field mat it was more something the "whole family" could get into.
@MN12BIRD no no they actually marketed the nes as a toy because this was after the crash now they marketed it with rob to make it seem more like a toy and they made it look like VCR because back then the designer Lance Barr thought people liked the "boxey" look, and they changed the zapper color because of laws "you cant have childrens toys look like real guns"
@MN12BIRD they marketed it with ROB for the reason of making it seem even more like a toy a friend of mine's father worked at Nintendo of America and he worked in marketing (from 1981-1999) and he negotiated with the stores saying "its not a video game system its an entertainment system ... a toy,and look at the robot video games don't have robots"
He said he didn't know anyone that had the Deluxe Set.....That's the one my father got, with R.O.B. and the gray gun - SMB and Duck Hunt were separate, and we had Gyromite :-)
I have an NES, but the games work when they are not pushed down. If I do push them down they won't work. This is a new 72 pin connector I installed so I have no idea what's going on. Does anyone know???
@skeletonthumbs That's normal mines the same way. The aftermarket 72 pin connectors are way too tight, so tight they grab both sides of the cart so you don't need to push it down. Mine works either way but it works just as good if I don't push it down so I don't bother.
The Famicom A and B buttons were originally squares but they were recalled for heavy use (I guess.) I dont whats the real reason they recalled the square famicom a and b buttons.
you might be abit wrong about the pin change, i believe there was 4 pins dedicated to the 10 nes chip and 10 pins for the expansion port, but 2 pins were taken out from the nes because of the lack of fm synthesis sound.
The NES is so poorly built, I repaired mine twice and it just wont work. That damn 72 pin connector and what not argh. The games are great just the unit doesn't seem to want to last.
@Snotnarok The NES is very reliable EXCEPT for the 72-pin connector. I've had at least 10 old NES's pass through my possession in the past few years (I had many I put new 72-pin connectors in and then sold) and every single one of them still worked great other than said problem. The front load was a bad design and the top loader like the Famicom is better there. But if you clean the 72-pin connector, sand and bend each pin it will work great.
@MN12BIRD I did, that's the problem, I got a brand new one off estarland, I put it in, cleaned everything. I made sure I was static free when doing it, now I can't get a damn game to boot. I think out of like 75 tries I got it to load once. Games are clean, the pins are clean, I just don't know what's wrong with this thing.
Dude, I can't believe these things are so cheap in your country. I live in Latvia, and since I was a little kid, they are selling only Chinese copies of famicom here for around 20$. Actually I am planning to grab one by myself, because I recently discovered a shop where people still sell these things in original boxes. Too bad I can't get an original one though. I could send one from eBay, but shipping costs are too expensive
@95WB icpizzaboy is right. I don't like the NES2. The picture quality on RF sucks compared to the original and there's no AV output so that sucks even more! I hate that. I also agree get an NES and fix or replace the 72-pin connector and even cut the 10NES chip (it's easy and I have a video on that) and you'll have a great working NES with AV output.
@MN12BIRD How about you do a comparison on video quality between the original and the toploader.
The best game to use imho is Smb the blue backgrounds show the lines of the toploader easily.
if i had a capture card i would do it myself. AV famicom is the best solution but they will cost nearly $200 just to get ya started(system + 72-60pin adapter).
Sometimes i ask myself how much money you earn. That hobby must be very expensive. i have some PAL Consoles with Games. And i am rather out of money o.O
@MN12BIRD I was at a shop in Cork city where they were charging €75 for the NES console alone, no pads or games or cabels... So, that has stunted my collection...
@95WB the nes2 does have very poor video quality it has vertical lines all across the screen. I would invest into an original model disable the 10nes and replace the 72 pin connector, you will find that the vid quality is awesome in the original model.Imho i would stay away from the clones, they are good but compatibility is an issue. If you want the best possible nes experience and have the money is buy an AV famicom it has the reliability of the NES2 with great picture 72-60 pin adapter needed
I have 1 toaster NES 1 Toploader and 1AV Famicom my favorite of the 3 is the AV famicom great video signal and reliable top loading slot. My favorite game is castlevania 3 (i also own Akumajō Densetsu cart with the vrc6 chip, music is sooooo good)
One of my friends got the Deluxe Set, I remember ROB just chilling there in his room as he never used the thing. He also had the Power Glove, man was that thing crazy. And crap, never worked but just barely with Super Glove Ball. I was given his NES years later, complete with the original gray Zapper and tons of games, including Super Glove Ball. Sadly, neither ROB nor glove was included!
Very nice review, and totally awesome to see the boxes, especially of the Famicom!
Lol everything is bigger in the USA I mean really probably 50% of all plastic in landfills is made up of the top halves of old nes carts. 1. Why would anybody throw out a working nes cart at all? (excluding dr jekkyl and mr hyde) 2. The old vcr is my favorite of the 2 :D
Heh...The Nintendo I got as a kid wasn't the control deck, deluxe or action set. It must of been the rip-off set. I was too young ,my older sister got it for me..and she didn't know much better I guess..She got it in this cheesy local electronic store, it only came with one controller and no games. Cost like $110 in around 1988. Think it might of been a returned or refurbed NES that they stuff in a box.
@Swi2ler To get composite video on the Top Loader? Yeah I think you can do it but you probably need some filter/amp stages on the composite signal. I haven't looked but I know there's some extra components required so it's not as simple as just wiring it out.
@MN12BIRD yes i suppose it is a little more complicated than i thought, but the convenience of the cartridge slot combined with composite video quality would definitely make it worth it.
Very nice video! The Toploader model 2 does exist with a regular AV-OUT in the PAL variety in the New Zealand and Australia areas this was NOT available in Europe despite it being a PAL region model.
The Japanese equivalent of the Toploader did have AV-OUT as well.
@superzombiefan89 Already did it and I show WAY more consoles since I have all 3 Genesis, model 1 Mega Drive, JVC X 'eye, 32X, sega CD etc etc look it up and check it out.
Wow, that was a great view mate, all thumps up! I never got the action set back then, we just had a model with 2 pads and a 3 game cart to start with over here. However, always great to see the NES, i still play it nowdays and I just love it :-D
Interesting history. The NES 2 was also available here in Australia as you might expect, here in Australia Mattel Toys were the distributors for Nintendo from around 1987 until around 1994 I believe, if you buy any early PAL NES or SNES games you will actually see the Mattel logo on the game pak display sticker and on the boses.
I think Nintendo had made 2 Pong Clones, 1 driving game and 1 Break out clone. I hope I can get myself a Famicom at some point if I can find it for a reasonable price, but shipping from Japan is murder. Anyways I love your videos keep up the good work!
I remember first seeing the top loader nes when I went to buy my snes at Toys R Us back in the early 90's. I didn't know until watching this that it was a legit Nintendo product. I thought it was a knock off XD
Or maybe I did used to know that and forgot after having not thought about it in so long. I don't know.
Very cool video man. I saved a Nintendo from the trash last summer, the front door is broken off and the case is broke.... but I think all of its insides still work fine. I have to give it a clean and test it out. Any ideas what I should do with it?
@pnroyal Just clean it up and see if it works. You can cut the 10NES chip out it's easy I've shown that in a video and it helps play games easier too. Along with cleaning and bending the pins in the 72-pin connector.
"Wheres Mega Man? Wheres Mega Man? The Mega poo just hit the fan Its 200X, and Wilys escaped and built 8 more evil bots Wheres that guy I know with balls like a Rhino, oh where? If I had to guess, Id say on the roof, Lets pan straight up in search of proof, Perhaps he is there, and flaunting his hair?"
With a resistor modification you can add Famicom Disk System/Namocot106, Sunsoft5b(FME-7), MMC5, VRC6 and VRC7 sound expansion to the NES by multiplexing the audio signal with the 2A03 chip. Search FamicomWorld for the modification since I can't post links in Youtube comments, sorry. It was dumb for Nintendo to can such a what could have been.
I own all Famicom games that use sound chips complete except for Metal Slader Glory.
@MN12BIRD that would be quite difficult for someone from North America in my opinion... im actually from Bulgaria and those clones were popular here until probably 2002...maybe even 2004... i think i have a friend who still keeps his own, ill check with him if i can get it and eventually post it to u if it actually still works..
I think there might be a pin layout for the bottom connector on the original NES for making a cord to possibly connect a Famicom disk drive to the NES. But I haven't seen one. I think it's possible. The Nintendo 'M82' NES had a connector in the back of it as well.
@ 6:16 7200???? HAHAHA! Also, I heard there might be some differences in the sound and music synthesis programmed between some Famicom and NES games? Example: In the game 'Excitebike', the NES version has no springy sound at the title screen but the Famicom one does. Even when the Famicom cartridge is adapted for fitting in the NES, it still has the springy sound. And I'm not talking about the disk drive since I know it has its own dedicated FM sound chip.
Very interesting and informative video Jake. I always found it interesting that the 8-bit consoles sold between north America and Europe were virtually the same, yet the 16-bit generation consoles were usually completely different. For example, I much prefer the design of the European SNES over the North American version.
The frontloader on the American NES is consistent with that of a VCR from the mid 80s. It was probably intended to be that way to make it look less like a toy like you mentioned in the video.
I know the NES my cousin has was from the NES Action Set. I know that because she has the two controllers, the NES Zapper, and the SMB/DH combo cartridge. She also has quite a collection of NES games as well.
@MikeyS9607 Find a "5-screw" copy of Gyromite. They usually go for like $10-$12 and when you open it up, it contains a Famicom adapter allowing you to play Famicom games on the NES. That's what I use, lots of fun!
@BranTroid94 5200 had an analog stick... in Europe, the 7800 sold with an NES/SMS style controller (D-Pad & action buttons) which works on the North American 7800s (and i think was available via mail order in North America)
In North America they DID want to make it look like a toy. Everybody was over video games and people lost interest, like you said. They decided to market it as a toy so people wouldn't see it as a video game system, and they would buy it.
Great review, but if you don't mind a would like to add something: The NES and Super Mario Bros. saved the video game industry as we know it... in North-America.
@tolstoydreamcastfan Yep You're right. Someone pointed that out earlier but I guess I'm safe since I said it was the first video game console to have it. But still I was certain it was Nintendo that did the D-Pad first.
i dont have to push the games down. i play all of my NES games without even pushing the game down . i just put it in and turn it on. In fact, i heard it actually hurts the pins to push the game down. but yeah, you don't have to put the game down. i don't know if it's just my console but i can't imagine why it would be.

Lachlant1984 1 year ago
Got my 1st NES in the "Action Set" back in December 88' it came with the gray gun.

I think Nintendo had made 2 Pong Clones, 1 driving game and 1 Break out clone. I hope I can get myself a Famicom at some point if I can find it for a reasonable price, but shipping from Japan is murder. Anyways I love your videos keep up the good work!
KingKehra 1 year ago
I remember first seeing the top loader nes when I went to buy my snes at Toys R Us back in the early 90's. I didn't know until watching this that it was a legit Nintendo product. I thought it was a knock off XD
Or maybe I did used to know that and forgot after having not thought about it in so long. I don't know.

Very cool video man. I saved a Nintendo from the trash last summer, the front door is broken off and the case is broke.... but I think all of its insides still work fine. I have to give it a clean and test it out. Any ideas what I should do with it?
pnroyal 1 year ago
@pnroyal Just clean it up and see if it works. You can cut the 10NES chip out it's easy I've shown that in a video and it helps play games easier too. Along with cleaning and bending the pins in the 72-pin connector.
MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@MN12BIRD thanks man... I'll probably make a before and after video on it. I'll check out your other video on the 10NES chip as well.

Nice vid. I cried a little big for nostalgia.
I have 2 working toaster oven NES's and a pretty good clone system called the Retro Entertainment System (I liked the design and controllers.)

MN12BIRD 1 year ago
With a resistor modification you can add Famicom Disk System/Namocot106, Sunsoft5b(FME-7), MMC5, VRC6 and VRC7 sound expansion to the NES by multiplexing the audio signal with the 2A03 chip. Search FamicomWorld for the modification since I can't post links in Youtube comments, sorry. It was dumb for Nintendo to can such a what could have been.
I own all Famicom games that use sound chips complete except for Metal Slader Glory.

@MegaCasualgamer Sweet. I would love to find one just for the collectors value of it. The gray ones that look like the original Famicom look awesome!
MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@MN12BIRD that would be quite difficult for someone from North America in my opinion... im actually from Bulgaria and those clones were popular here until probably 2002...maybe even 2004... i think i have a friend who still keeps his own, ill check with him if i can get it and eventually post it to u if it actually still works..

I think there might be a pin layout for the bottom connector on the original NES for making a cord to possibly connect a Famicom disk drive to the NES. But I haven't seen one. I think it's possible. The Nintendo 'M82' NES had a connector in the back of it as well.
mattsprinter 1 year ago
@ 6:16 7200???? HAHAHA! Also, I heard there might be some differences in the sound and music synthesis programmed between some Famicom and NES games? Example: In the game 'Excitebike', the NES version has no springy sound at the title screen but the Famicom one does. Even when the Famicom cartridge is adapted for fitting in the NES, it still has the springy sound. And I'm not talking about the disk drive since I know it has its own dedicated FM sound chip.
mattsprinter 1 year ago
That's Atari 7800 not 7200.

Very interesting and informative video Jake. I always found it interesting that the 8-bit consoles sold between north America and Europe were virtually the same, yet the 16-bit generation consoles were usually completely different. For example, I much prefer the design of the European SNES over the North American version.
samuskiller19 1 year ago
The frontloader on the American NES is consistent with that of a VCR from the mid 80s. It was probably intended to be that way to make it look less like a toy like you mentioned in the video.

I know the NES my cousin has was from the NES Action Set. I know that because she has the two controllers, the NES Zapper, and the SMB/DH combo cartridge. She also has quite a collection of NES games as well.

strangely enough, while the NES2 was RF only, the equivalent Famicom revision supported composite AV.

@brtshstel Oh I know eh! They makes the FC better and at the same time make the NES worse? WTF Nintendo!

BTW, the reason why they changed the Zapper's color was because of a law stating that all toy guns had to have neon orange on it.

MikeyS9607 1 year ago

They decided to market it as a toy so people wouldn't see it as a video game system, and they would buy it.
magicman1995 1 year ago
@magicman1995 maybe but they didnt want to make it look like a cheap toy that costs over $100 if any toy a high quality robust one.
Sypran 1 year ago
Great review, but if you don't mind a would like to add something: The NES and Super Mario Bros. saved the video game industry as we know it... in North-America.

tolstoydreamcastfan 1 year ago
@tolstoydreamcastfan Yep You're right. Someone pointed that out earlier but I guess I'm safe since I said it was the first video game console to have it. But still I was certain it was Nintendo that did the D-Pad first.
