  • is it me or are those floor toms up pretty high?

  • Virgil has mastered the art of sounding like he cannot keep time, yet he does.

  • @Scrumdilliisious are you kidding?? his the Father of Time!!

  • @DenyADeadPlanet

     Totally kidding. lol

  • @Scrumdilliisious u mean polyrhythmic playing ? ?

  • @daonpa All drumming is polyrhythmic. What Virgil does is polymetric.

  • @Scrumdilliisious thank you for understanding the difference!

  • Nothing, but these two sound like they're playing two different songs. Technical brilliance of an instrument does not always transfer into a good song, proof of this is this music.

  • @miketish4 Totally agree, they're amazing musicians, but Planet X is to music as the Harlem Globetrotters are to basketball.

  • @miketish4 It's called Progressive, but yeah I know what you mean I'm more into melodic Rock and Roll and sometimes in the simplicity you find more music than in the speed or technique, but Virgil Donati is so ridiculously talented that he can find music over technique I mean you can almost feel the melody coming from percussion, but he is so talented for the other members so they can't keep up to him that is why I don´t like Planet X that much...

  • Sounds like musical wanking.

  • @miketish4 What's so bad about being good at your instrument?

  • é msm néh gilberbass, uma pegada mais grovizada msm, com umas fusas, mto bom

  • Pow........esse dois ai são mtos grooves.....mto foda

  • Such a beautiful drum kit and the sound of this band is electric! Power/precision/attack..not only the drum kit..but the tones the bass player is producing to give Virgil the benefit of creating parts is excilirating!!! xD

  • lol moonbabies, thought it said manboobies xD

  • Those guys knows something about music! Donati is a very talented drummer!

  • Technical ability = 9999999999++++++, musical -00000000000000 Fusion is like torture or bad Jazz.

  • @markdlowe I felt like I was having a nightmare at some parts but it was rather nice once my ears stopped bleeding :)

  • Not knocking the bass player but why does the bass need to sound so bad? I understand it's subjective to taste but seriously it sucks. If it's fretless that would explain it.

  • Comment removed

  • @markdlowe No it wouldn't cause there's nothing inherently bad about fretless tone, in any context. Why do you think his bass's tone is bad?

  • @Marlowann I agree about the fretless, in the right place it's good but in this clip I felt it just didn't fit and sounded very muddy. Beyond doubt the bass player is killer but I felt tonally it let him and the jam down. I guess it's more taste than anything else.

  • @markdlowe It could sound fuller and less muddy I suppose; the bass in Guthrie Govan's "Waves" comes to mind. I am curious to see where else he could go with his tone but this setting always seemed to fit with the sound of the whole band.

  • 3:41 xDDDDD!!!!! ahahahahahahahaha

  • The best!!!

  • Imagine Virgil Donati with Justin Bieber...

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great video really love virgil being a drummer myself i really respect him and wondered why DT didnt pick him cause the change of direction could have done them good. I must say playing in a band is great but that chance when its just you and the bassist is awesome especially when working on parts

  • Part 2: However, some music, made by people like Virgil Donati, is made to intentionally stir a different reaction from its audience. Its focus is on a different aspect of musicality - where the musicians are more interested in manipulating music theory into the most strange or unique forms, while making sure the content is still interesting enough to be listenable.

  • Comment removed

  • Part 1: This is my comment to people doubtful of Virgil and his bands' musicality.

To quote someone here: "Music is about feeling and emotion" ... Let's just say I respect your opinion but I take a different view. In my view, music isn't about how much "soul" is in it or how "emotional" it is; music is entertainment. Some music, which you would say has "feeling and emotion," is made by people intentionally to stir that kind of soulful reaction from its audience.

  • He is not from human race.. no problem

  • Virgil is a babe in the woods when it comes to music sensitivity.

  • is this even considered music?? music is about feeling and emotion. i'm afraid that this is way too far. but still fucking mental

  • @Brok3nCarlos When I listen to Planet X, it's definitely a musical experience. A very rich one. Just listen to something like the hi-hat at 05:24. It's implying a really nice groove. Frame it against the bass, which is playing a really nice triplet groove of its own, and it's real badass. It has a great 'pulling against itself' feeling. The whole section adds up to a very nice, slippery groove teeming with complex feeling. And that's just one small section. Their music is full of such moments.

  • I don't know about you guys, but I'm done getting offended over what either side has to say. Dramatic Turn is golden, and Planet X and Donati are damn good in their own right. I've met real life DT fans, and trust me when I say that not a single one of them were nearly as bitchy as some of the more active DT fans on here.

I'm going to look more into Planet X, and then I'm going to listen to Dramatic Turn again. That's my piece, Youtube, you ever-steaming cauldron of butthurt.

  • So f***ing AWSOME, can't wait for these guys to come to sweden some more time!

  • MMM This is awesome! I love all his musical projects.

  • Essa cara é um monstro.

  • Everyone on this video is an immature fuck. This means everyone hating on Virgil because he didn't make DT, and Virgil fans who are trashing DT fans and DT themselves. If you watched "The Spirit Carries On", you'd know that DT was looking for a drummer that played the songs the way that they have always been played, and not someone who tried to improvise. Do you really think that after 25 years, fans are going to want to hear their favorite songs played differently? Grow the fuck up, faggots

  • @XxStrongDrums1996xX It's Youtube, so more or less business as usual.

  • Not trashing on Mangini, but I really think that the new Dream Theater drummer should have been Blake Richardson or Virgil Donati. They would have better music with either one of them behind the kit. (I prefer Richardson though)

  • thanks for writing out the time signatures... now please make it in a color that shows up so I can read it!

  • The reason He didnt get the job was apparently as said by the Keybordist of DT is because he improvised to much... and they wanted the songs played as they were on the album....

  • The drumming is absolutely astonishing, but am i the only one that realize that the bass at the beginning is pretty damn awesome too

  • So much for "white guys not having rhythm"....

  • 5:23 = KICK ASS

  • I've seen a Virgil show closely in Prato (Italy). It was wonderful and Virgil was happy and very available with all fans...

  • depois que conheci o trabalho de Virgil, sinceramente passei a encarar a bateria de uma forma diferente. Ele é o cara!

  • I think I'm more impressed with the bass lol.

  • @OpenCasket19 I guess because youre not a drummer....

  • @bonhati

    I'm not a bassist either...

  • Virgil is a MONSTER!!!!!!

  • i was suggested by the new music youtube thing because i liked bobby jarzombeck....this is crap jazz/ noise.

  • what a beast

  • Virgil Donati was born to play the drums..

  • It's great. Doesn't make me want to go out and buy a drum kit though. I'm not moved at all in any great emotional sense by this needless noodling and 'look at me I can play extremely convolutedly' kind of music. Great skills though.

  • @petehasplans So true.

  • Look, this music is unbelievable and they are extremely talented! BUT guys, play with some feel and love, not what you practice. You've already proved to us that you're the best.

  • I love how no one ever mentions virgil donati in "Best drummers" videos. But that's good, wouldn't want to attract slipknot fanboy retards to donati. Tho, virgil fans are one of the few fanbases that really understands and appriciates what he really does. Not many drummers can handle polyrhythms and play the offhands improvised while playing around with changing the rhythms. I'm happy he had to stay in planet x. Would rather see some new planet x cd's be released than dream theater cd's.

  • @Majtzy I totally agree with you

  • Virgil Donati and Thomas Lang can eat Mike Mangini for breakfast any day! Wow

  • @neoraul20 tell that to 2:10 in on the backs of angels. he plays two different rhythms at the same time (not two time sigs, one rhythm along with the guitar/bass and another rhythm along with keyboards at the same time). im sure virgil and thomas can play it, but im saying it to say that theyre all great. oh, and mike mangini is the worlds fastest drummer and a former professor at berklee in case you forgot

  • Man I really love all these technical drummers. We are really living at time in history where new ground is being broken and it's awesome.

  • no question this guy is the best. he practices all day everyday. watch out

  • Serious talent here..... but not for me

  • by and bye the way eh, the turquoise drums,(i think the turks discovered it)....or blue green, according to david icke, reptilians have copper based blood while humans have iron..while copper is a trace element in our blood. this goes with the name marduk, nibiru or the band planet X,idig the groove, man. its spicy.

  • Is it just me or does the bassist look a lot like Steve Morse?

  • @ilovemysr505 -its steve's cousin virgil.

  • It's a Virgil Donati video, but I'd like to say the bassist did a great job and they were locked in all the time. I don't why there's all this chatter on the Dream Theater tryouts. It's not a career ending rehearsal for Donati or the other drummers who didn't get hired.

  • DT fans are such babies. Virgil's ability as an overall musician was simply too much for DT fans, not DT. Well, maybe DT too. There is not a more talented musician on the planet than Virgil Donati.

  • @sixgunsymphony love your comment dude

  • @sixgunsymphony Virgil's ability was too much for DT, not DT fans is what you should have said. I am a fan of DT, just as much as I am of any other talented prog. rock groups. I really wish DT would have went with Marco Minnemann or Virgil Donati, but it wasn't to be. It seems evident that they are both better than mangini, however.

  • @sixgunsymphony ....what makes your point fact??.....Nothing...it's your oppinion, and your entitled to it.......when it comes to Mangini, Lang, Virgil and Marco and think all 4 can do something that the other 3 can't..............but all are at the top of their game when it comes to being a "Superdrummer"...............thats my oppinion and im sticking to it.

  • @mikeybbdrummin I'm, I have no problem with any of the drummers you mentioned. I do have a problem with DT fans. Did you read my initial post?

  • @mikeybbdrummin ........Honestly, I didn't.Yes Virgil is amazing and im not a huge fan of the over the top drumming (what I call it) but it is mind blowing.....But so Is T.Lang, Mangini and Marco....all different but the same goal....To do what the other guy cant do...I read that Virgil and Mangini are friends and talk drums often.....Anyway, Just saying what makes Virgil better then Thomas Lang or the others...but to say Virgil is the most talented is a huge statement.thats all!

  • @sixgunsymphony Akira Jimbo?

  • @drummernezzy Who is that?

  • @sixgunsymphony Oh, man, just search for him on youtube--he's got tons of videos.

he's insanely good!! Of course I know Virgil is too, but I bet Akira could hold his own against Virgil. check him out!

  • @drummernezzy @drummernezzy. Mr. Jimbo plays to the crowd, which is why you, and so many others find him groovy and entertaining (not a bad thing). But when it comes to technique, precision, and an uncanny ability for poly-rhythms, the guy isn't even in the same class, and any drummer of record on here will tell you the same. You need keep looking at Virgil's videos, and you'll start to pick up on the utter style and skill differences.

  • @drummernezzy But, Virgil is not Asian, so I guess that's a plus for Jimbo.

  • @sixgunsymphony it won't let me post a link, but watch a drum battle between Akira and Hiroyuki Noritake. ya gotta admit they're kinda good, even if Virgil might possibly own them!

  • @sixgunsymphony lol. virgil donati actually started out playing in a DT cover band, then... he just got better. lol

  • @mattxcox Agreed!

  • @mattxcox He played a lot at The Grainstore in Melbourne Australia which is where he is from. That was 20 years ago and he was a monster player then. Released an album on vinyl, the band was loose change. Then he did a stint with a pop commercial called Southern Sons and so on when heading to the US.

  • i loved it when virgil was trying out for dt, they thought he fucked up or didnt know the song, when really he wass trying something that was beyond dream theater, virgil stated "i know how to play the real part it goes like this" he played portnoys simple part then said "i was just trying something new" for once rudess and petruccis minds were blown

  • What's the name of the Bass player?

  • Wow,I think only Travis Barker could play like this

  • @Thomasgipsy lol

  • @Thomasgipsy travis barker is more punky and poppy

  • @Thomasgipsy you´re being ironic,right?

  • @semanray Yeah,Virgil is amazing, but many kids think Barker is the best drummer in the world

  • @Thomasgipsy got that right!

  • VIRGIL: I want to participate in the DT

DT: forgive us not give alms

  • 1974 called and they want Geddy back!!!

  • I saw this video playing at a percussion shop and laughed saying, "Travis Barker smooths out the rough edges of this dude, who sounds more like a lawnmower with a missing spark plug, or a broken 1970s Sears washing machine!" Some dude said, "hey, screw off! That's Virgil D!" I said, "KMA, fool. Better scope out Barker and get back to me, clown man!" Dude flew through the air and Karate kicked me then whapped me over the head with a ride cymbal. The manager slapped my face and threw me out.

  • @JoeJacari they did the right things

  • Absolutely incredible. I wanna see the foot cam!

  • so sweet..

  • Virgil is a monster... DT doesnt deserve him...

  • whats the name of the song at 8:26?

  • @dougbit Alien Hip Hop

  • Monster musicians.

  • wow, this was AMAZING. the bass player was also SUPER INTENSE

  • MacPro...hehe

  • why is charlie sheen playing drums???

lol but he rlly rlly good

  • Sick rehearsal!! While I agree that Virgil wouldn't be a good fit for DT, Mangini is amazing. I'm looking forward for the new lineup!' I love DT and PX, too different kinds of music. It's all preference. They both don't suck :). PX is just more on the crazy fusion side :D!! I love that. Anyways, just giving my two cents from a musicians point of view :D. Skadooosh!

  • i love that they aren't using charts

  • meshuggah might find this worth watching

  • What's the name of the bassist? look at his arm.

  • Virgil was TOO MUCH for Dream Theater!

  • @systematicdesign I am a huge fan of DT but that "You passed the challenge" part was pathetic :D I mean come on man it's freaking Virgil Donati..

  • @systematicdesign i d on't know why i was laughing as a loon when i knew they are auditioning him, actually i was confused who's auditioning who :)

  • @refbassist Hehe...I think that Petrucci was so nervous, so he told things without sense like "You pass the test" hehehehe

  • @systematicdesign He was TOO MUCH old for them! :)

  • @systematicdesign

Funny thing - if you saw the DT auditions , Virgil.........well............sorta didn't play too good. I mean.........this song here is a lot harder than say, Dance of Eternity ( imo). But Virgil sorta didn't do too well with Dance of eternity

  • @STIXAHOY what I can feel about those auditions is that they maybe dont want to be "PART" of DT. . . but maybe have a connection with them, like for future solo albums and things like that, or side projects. THats onle an opinion

  • @STIXAHOY I wonder if he didnt practice it enough, went to just have some fun maybe?

  • @1banez hes only doing patterns trying to memorize the tempo , after that , they start to improvise and have fun.

  • @systematicdesign +67564356013475617'56'746543

  • @systematicdesign uve gota to be joking right? - because dreamtheater didnt pick your favorite u must put the band down to make him look better - Dream Theater is probably the best band there is in the current times - and looking at the way rock is moving...probably the last of its kind.

  • @TechSwoop he's not putting DT down... he's just putting virgil up... from a technical perspective virgil is much better than portnoy(ask portnoy he'd say the same) portnoy's awesomeness came from his ability to play exactly what was good for the song in the limits of his technical abilities(which were still amazing btw). virgil probably was 'too much' for dream theater and they probably thought the same thing 'bout him, metallica thought about claypool. he'll be better off doing his own stuff.

  • @c0d3x001 Exactly!

  • @c0d3x001 i wouldn't go as far as to say virgil donati was "too much" for dream theater, but rather he wasn't right for dream theater. technically speaking, yes virgil is lightyears away from portnoy. but musically speaking, virgil just wouldn't fit the bill, because that's not what dream theater was looking for.

  • @Spacecowboyy yep that might be true... but how do we know anyway ...we're not members of dt :D

  • @c0d3x001 yeah true. ah well, mike mangini is awesome anyway. personally i would've wanted marco in the band though.

  • @Spacecowboyy yeah marco would have been great cause he's like one of the happiest looking drummers out there

  • @c0d3x001 sometime being to good its just too bad for the wrong band/team/situation/realtionship not meaning its bad just in a different perspective of life! imho.

  • @c0d3x001 Portnoy has no Blues in his veins. I love him and his touch, but he cannot play a shouffle, he just can't. Besides Virgil Donati is very '70s style, he has something of Ian Paice and Neil Peart, so it would sound too "old" and too "warm" for Dream Theater's standards, which is a pity. In fact, to me, the thing that Dream Theater misses most is the fact that they have too less in common with the real Prog bands, the ones from the '60s and '70s, such as ELP, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and so on

  • @PietroRumenta i think it's great when bands don't have too much in common... i mean who want's to listen to bands all day that sound like every other band... i like when musicians do something different. they don't have to but why not try something out

  • @c0d3x001 also if you watch the documentary they made on the auditions it was not just a case of how good a drummer a person was but what kind of personality they had and stuff like that so it had to be a whole package when choosing their new drummer

  • @432drummer yeah i know... i watched the documentary and i think mangini is a great guy and and also a fantastic drummer and i think they're gonna be happy with him but for me as a drummer it would have been incredibly interesting to see how virgil would approach the new dt songs :D

  • @c0d3x001 just as it happens with mangini now in dt. they're holding him way back. virgil would have died of boredom i guess.. when i heard virgil admire dt and say that dt were always the ones to inspire him i was sitting and thinking - wtf is he talking about?? he outdoes dt all the way around, how can he not figure it out himself?...

  • @432drummer exactly right. mangini was the best fit.

  • @c0d3x001 exactly!

  • @TechSwoop Hey man actually I´m the bigger fan of mangini, (since he played with vai, he is incredible) and dream theater is my favorite ban....I really enjoy the first videos of them playing in Rome....but really Donati is better....listen planet x...honestly is better!!!!!

  • @systematicdesign I thought the same thing dude....WAY TO MUCH I´ll say....

  • @systematicdesign so, he's better than Mike Mangini?

  • @ransisua Absolutely...but no many people unerstand him...including DT see the auditions

  • @ransisua for me... much better than Mike....

  • @systematicdesign so fucking truth

  • @systematicdesign He is definiitely godlike on the drums! I saw the whole auditions and he passed all tests, but he wasn't in top 3 of DT's ranking. Donati is not too good, he has just another style and type of creativity. Mangini is perfectly consorting with DT and technically far above all the others.

  • @zakkwyldeverehrer I totally agree with you. Mangini is awesome, but he was chosen by DT because he is VERSATIL: He can play all the DT songs like (and better) Portnoy...but listen the new cd, he isn´t composer like Donati and dont have the Imagination like Portnoy. (I know the music was composed only by the rest of the guys, but listen the cd and the drums sounds like an session artist, not a drummer heroe).

  • @systematicdesign Yes, you are totally right and I never said something else;) I bought the new DT album and thought: Fuck, why are the drums so.. holding back?

  • You Are All Crazy, God Help Make me Crazy Too, :D

  • This is a great instructional to understand all that crazy over the top progressive meter changes

  • "Super fast." When someone uses a term like "super fast" while talking about musicianship, you can count on it that they don't know what they're talking about.

  • I searched Planet X but then appeared all that crazy stuff about a tenth planet......I was just looking for some Virgil's drumming goddamit!

  • Virgil Donati = BOSS

  • the time frames played by these two are just insane.

  • @beatfreak1983 Agree ! I recommend you not to force anyone who has their own concept.. World is huge, millions of human... and Thousands of musicians looking videos here.. Is almost impossible to discuss it. just leave stupid comments for themselves, the important here is you have the right understanding for this passion "To be a drummer" and To Learn always for any drummer you would see on YT, be known or not.. Yesterday I was lucky, I have filmed Waldo Madera from one meter of distance!

  • @beatfreak1983 Agree with you Totally... Musicians are not for a competition.. are for sharing and Learning. Only non mature people can waste time making eternal comparing.. bla bla bla !!! Thanks.

  • Mind. Fuck.

  • It's amazing how they can count such complicated time signatures, and still keep in tune with each other. This, yes, is quite impressive : D

  • I saw the auditions for Dream Theater and Virgil was my favorite, too bad he wasn't chosen or maybe is for the best.

  • Well, I need to listen to this album on mass repeat again. jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez

  • I wonder why he likes his drums to sound so choked...(?)

  • right floor tom sounds BIG. Like a bear.

  • That's the colour drum kit I want.

  • @theinck If I remember correctly, it's the sea green foam color, very much like turquoise. Notice that color has been getting more and more popular? It's a pleasant thing to look at.

  • thanks. Now i can get the bass lines of those parts, that was under a ton of shredding.

  • i wish VD joins DT. he is the most inspirational. i love his drumming, so good and interesting to listen.

  • my brain took 10 seconds to figure out how 5:20 and 7:30 happened.

  • Awesome, but why did he made DT auditions, i mean, i love him, and I love DT, but is he quitting Planet X?

  • Putting Virgil in DT would be a great waste of his potential.
