Phil Collins is Genesis's best singer but that is to take nothing away from Peter Gabriel or Ray Wilson, both good in their own way, but Ray Wilson should have had at least another album to prove himself, Calling All Stations is a very underrated album, I think he does very well on this version of No Son Of Mine
"Calling all stations" is Genesis musically, but it comes short with the vocals. Ray is a great singer but it does not have the punch needed to make Genesis songs shine. He does not have the delivery that Phil had.
the beginning is quite good, however most of the song is missing the poise the Phil Collins version has. It must have been quite difficult for Ray as he is some 20 years younger than the rest of this crew.
Ray was in Genesis for 3 years, Phil for 26 years. I'm defenetly not closed minded. For me this isn't Genesis anymore but everybody had there own opinion.
Phantastic! I don´t know what everybody has got against Ray! I mean - c´mon - of course if you use to know a singer for a long time it might get confusing with the new voice! But hey - Ray´s doin´ pretty good in singin´ and he´s quite emotional with his interpretation! So give him a chance!
Oh my god - I like this version much more than Phil´s interpretation - allthough Phil´s a musical genius though! It really doesn´t matter who sings a song - it´s the music and the lyrics that capture our hearts!
Does it really ever matter who sings the song?????...Ray is a great singer and nice,"eye candy"..lol.....and Phil is wonderful...I love Mike Rutherford...
Personally, and therefore this is totally my opinion, I don't feel he captures any of the emotion and power of the song. All I see Ray Wilson doing is going through the motions, and not very well at that.
Of course it matters who sings this song. There's a raw and powerful emotion that PC demonstrates on this song that I don't feel RW can emphathise with, although I don't know RW 'history'.
As for eye candy. Well it I wanted that I'd go to a Take That concert...
I am a true genesis fan in all it's versions and I feel the 3 versions are awesome and how Phil and Ray could sing seamlessly songs from other periods, awesome!
I feel people were just too narrow minded to give Ray a fair chance, he deserved it, Genesis and all of us fans a second Genesis/Ray album... CAS was amazing a second one would have been even better.
Rock on Ray you are a first class musician in my list !
Poor Ray. A talented guy who had to convince a lot of fans , who were entrenched in the previous incarnation of Genesis that he could carry the band. If fans had just given him a chance, he could have lasted, but it's vicious, they just trashed him. Stop trashing the guy.
I like Ray Wilson, but I still think he doesn't fit in this song. I have less problems with Phil Collins singing Peter Gabriel stuff, than with this Ray Wilson version. This is not to bash Ray.
i dont understand how people bash on new singers for replacing the other singer... its not like he kicked Phil out and took over,Phil left and Tony and Mike tried to carry on w/o him... Ray is a real good singer who never got a real chance to prove himself.

CAS Genesis was nothing more than a Genesis Cover Band, pretending to be Genesis. And Mike and Tony know it.
Wiped CAS out of existence? Did Banks and Rutherford have a big record burning party, to erase CAS off the face of the earth?
No, they had announced on this recent tour they weren't going to perform songs from CAS, and anyone can see why. It was a tour with the '78 to '96 lineup, playing songs from that period, the most identifiable and most-celebrated Genesis lineup. In that context, you wouldn't expect Phil to belt out "The Dividing Line," but CAS is as much a part of the Genesis history.
Yeah, lots of great songs from the '78 to '96 era, like "In the Cage", "Ripples", "I Know What I Like"...of wait, those were all from different eras.
Let me make this clear. I bought CAS, and I liked it. I liked Mike & the Mechanics and Phil, Peter, and Tony's solo stuff as well. I even own an old GTR record. But I don't consider any of those "Genesis", even if CAS had the Genesis name. The fact that not one song was deserving of playing on the latest Genesis tour bears that opinion out.
As you know, if you've heard "Three Sides Live," you know Genesis played "In the Cage". If you bought "The Way We Walk: The Longs", you know that lineup played "I Know What I Like." You could EXPECT those songs would be played on the recent tour.
Of Course, Phil Collins, Mechanics, Banks, or GTR are not Genesis. They're solo project albums. But CAS is... because you had the writing and playing of Banks and Rutherford. That no songs from CAS were played on the recent tour is irrelevant.
I dont know what your problem is-i have to admit that the Genesis-songs are definately out of his league but the songs he wrote himself are great. i love his voice.aggree this performance is pretty boring but thats no reason to say he is all bad
@bri657: Totally agreed! Maybe some people don't like him cause he's more cute or something ;) He's good singer, did very good job with Genesis. They surely don't know about his co-operation with Scorpions, Stiltskin, etc. The same thing is with Tarja-kids from Nightwish.
No I'm not Ray Wilson,I'm just someone who enjoys Genesis music of all eras ,thinks Ray Wilson did a good job in a hard situation and doesn't think he deserves to still be getting personally abusive comments from people with nothing better to do with their time.
If you hate him so much...why spend so much time watching him ...go and watch somebody you enjoy and tell them how much you like them and what their music means to you.Its a much more productive way to spend your time.
Ahhh lovixtube...imagine finding you commenting on a Ray Wilson clip!! Had to get your daily fix did you? again..protesting too much? you love him..admit it.
Its funny Ray looks like the cat that got the cream here, but the truth is he looks absolutely pathetic and nothing short of a karaoke singer. Cant work out what hes doing with the facials at points and also the part where he sings 'eye'...whats with the wide open mouth. Hes been coached all the way through how to sing these songs. Ray nothing you've done is truely yours!!.
Aaaahhh!! It's so bad. Sorry, but I don't like it. I absolutely love Genesis... but Genesis without Collins or Gabriel is just not worth it. Ray Wilson isn't bad or anything, he just doesn't work with Genesis and makes them sound kinda boring. I'm just glad that Collins toured with Genesis again, after this nightmare.
God, this really sucks. Lack of inspiration in the drum department, lounge singer vocals, unenthusiastic playing by Banks and Rutherford. It doesn't sound.
The onlything huge about Ray is his ego, he honestly thinks hes the greatest singer, not only in the world now, but of all time. Arrogant as hell, surprising for somebody with such limited and dated talent, still you'd have to be a mute not to get a fan base in Germany, they all suffer from obsessive disorders when it comes to music appreciation!!
Must admit as a Genesis fan loving all the older stuuf, Calling All Stations has really grown on me - an excellent album with some brill. Banks/Rutherford songs - but it just doesn't feel like Genesis wihout Phil or Peter.
Chester asked Tony and Mike about becoming a full member of the band but they declined but they wanted both Chester and Daryl, but Daryl decided to go with Phil on his Dance Into The Light tour. So Chester did the same thing and was Phil's drummer for that tour. I think the tour would have had more acceptance if Daryl and Chester had been a part of it that way there would have been more familiarity for fans.
Sounds like Phil's band was more Genesis then this new Genesis. I think one of the reasons phil left was cause Mike and Tony would not let Chester and Daryl become full time memmbers. I think they deserve it too after all the years they put into the band.
I agree. They've put in many years of good work and they sound great with the band. I saw them in Chicago on the tour last year, and they still just click together so damn well, including Chester and Daryl. They deserved the recognition of being full-time members
@pahlavanone your right that is the main reason why Phil left at the time cause Mike and Tony wouldn't let Chester or Daryl in as part of Genesis...they worked their ass off and should have been part of Genesis..
The problem with Rays voice isn't that its bad or anything, it just lacks character, its kind of mono mood, and in this respect a lot of people find it boring!!Alot of eighties ballad singers suffered from this problem so this is probably why he has the unfortunate rep of being quite a dated singer, I personally feel his voice is good but low, singers that progress through the decades usually have a diverse range which allows them to write and sing different types of songs.
Genesis with Ray definitivly was strange. Nevertheless "Calling all Stations" was one of their best albums, I love listening to it though I am a huge Phil-Fan. the problem just was that everyone exspected a Peter/Phil-Singer which in my oppinion never gave him a fair chance or a change to the group.
This happened on my 6th birthday. It's a pity i wasn't there, that would've been a perfect birthday present. I've loved everything this band have done all my life, and continue to love it so.
For how long is that Promo Code valid? Just found the Promo Code TOPFLOP on a website to use it at Doylesroom com to get exclusive $550 sign up Bonus. Is that code working somewhere else as well? If yes, for how long?
Argh, after changing from watching Genesis with Phil preforming and now watching Genesis with Ray preforming is just making me ears bleed. I think this is a horrible combination of Mike, Ray and Tony =[
This is not good at all. Ray Wilson is not good singer. His voice sounds like one of those generic singers from back in the 1980s. I don't mind him so much on the Calling All Stations songs, but can't bear to hear him sing Peter/Phil eras songs. I've heard tribute bands sound better than this. Not just him, but Tony and Mike's playing isn't up to par either, sounds uninspired. It was wise for them to call it quits. Sorry, just my opinion.
Theres no doubt that he can sing very well but the fact that he has a humorless personality doesnt help him at all, quick note to ray smile you miserable tw@t, thats why he failed because he's about as charismatic as a boiled chip! sorry but thats the truth.
I agree for the most part, but I think his voice alright for songs like this and Home By The Sea. He could have done better with his voice on these songs but I think nervousness played a big factor in his performance on this tour. Having so many big expectations on him and having to fill Phil Collin's shoes would be difficult for even the best singer.
This song open the setlist, second part of this concert is really amazing, even Tony and Mike have stage fright till then, maybe you can watch this and then try to say something worth saying.
Genesis - Six Hours Live, 1972-1980. Genesis was a progressive band in the 70s. When Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett left they went contemporary. This 2-DVD set shows Genesis in concert during those creative years and it's a side of Genesis newer fans should get to know. We revamped the audio, the video is excellent and these versions of these shows in compilation form are available NOWHERE else. This 2-DVD collector's set is an absolute must-have for any fan of this era of Genesis
Ray had an impossible job and did his best. The reason he had an impossible job is proven by nearly every single comment here. Everyone is saying, he's not Peter and he's not Phil. Well no shit he isn't Phil. Tony and Mike had every right to keep going, Phil wouldn't have wanted them to pack it in. CAS is a good album, and it's too bad everyone has to be so narrow minded about it.
I totally agree with your post. If only Ray, Mike & Tony had been given time to develop and bond together.
Phil is different, Peter is different and Ray is Different. They should not be compared. With Ray it was going to be NEW GENESIS. That's why the Genesis fans didn't give it a chance. Now Genesis is back to the same old formate.
It still has Tony and Mike in so it's still Genesis. And although i agree with what you're saying, people think of Genesis without Phil in the same way Queen fans think of Queen without Freddie Mercury. The band carried on after he died, but now they're recording a new album with Paul Rodgers, and it might not be accepted either. At least Phil had the ability to rejoin Genesis though.
No, the Mechanics were better than this. I heard somewhere that they were considering Paul Carrick as a replacement for Phil. It still wouldn't hold the magic the band had with Phil, but it probably would be a lot better than this crap.
ray wilson is *the* musician who's keeping the genesis memory and spirit alive for the younger generations. ever notice that he plays genesis material at his live shows (some of which are on his live albums, btw)?
now Genesis has reunited as rutherford, banks and collins. hope you're happy now. don't get me wrong, i love the collins era of genesis too, but i'm not going to bash ray over what regrettably happened to the third era genesis.
It´s a pity that this version is a tone below the original version, probably the most important reason of that "heartless" feeling, because Ray is an excellent and very expressive singer. It only happens that we are used to hear the original version, but this guy is a great singer anyway
I think the whole tone of the stage is depressing. Everything is totally stripped down from previous tours. It's difficult to get excited watching this.
i can understand why tony and mike chosen him as lead singer of genesis, he is very similar to peter gabriel as far as vocals are concerned, calling all stations was a decent album, i beleive they thought they might get alot of the old fans back with the gabriel sound. we should leave wilson alone he had a imposible job to do but in my opinion he did a very good job, well done mate
What a load of crap!
He is nothing like phil collins no where near as good.
And Us and Them 94 you have no clue your as tone deaf as Ray and he cannot sing!

I dont know what your problem is-i have to admit that the Genesis-songs are definately out of his league but the songs he wrote himself are great. i love his voice.aggree this performance is pretty boring but thats no reason to say he is all bad
doro9179 3 years ago
@bri657: Totally agreed! Maybe some people don't like him cause he's more cute or something ;) He's good singer, did very good job with Genesis. They surely don't know about his co-operation with Scorpions, Stiltskin, etc. The same thing is with Tarja-kids from Nightwish.
You don't like him? Stop watchin' him.
aosmialowski 3 years ago
No I'm not Ray Wilson,I'm just someone who enjoys Genesis music of all eras ,thinks Ray Wilson did a good job in a hard situation and doesn't think he deserves to still be getting personally abusive comments from people with nothing better to do with their time.
If you hate him so much...why spend so much time watching him ...go and watch somebody you enjoy and tell them how much you like them and what their music means to you.Its a much more productive way to spend your time.
bri657 3 years ago
Given that Ray Wilson is singing it, it should be called
NO SONG OF MINE
in fact that is what he should call all his tours, instead of "World of Genesis"
2geog2 3 years ago 2
Ahhh lovixtube...imagine finding you commenting on a Ray Wilson clip!! Had to get your daily fix did you? again..protesting too much? you love him..admit it.
bri657 3 years ago
If you have nothing nasty to say about Ray Wilson, then say nothing at all.
Saying nice things about him must be because YOU ARE Ray Wilson in disguise, and you are well known for coming on youtube and praising yourself.
Remember, anyone that is not Ray Wilson feels only contempt for him.

May someone send me that song please?
I really love it x3

one of the best songs ray performed with genesis. his dark voice is perfect for the darkness of the song. a great opening show song.

its good but he sings it lower than the album.

Excuse me, But this guy has a great voice for Genesis, and actualy sings quite a lot of the songs better than Phil!
And I love Phil Collins!!!

Aaaahhh!! It's so bad. Sorry, but I don't like it. I absolutely love Genesis... but Genesis without Collins or Gabriel is just not worth it. Ray Wilson isn't bad or anything, he just doesn't work with Genesis and makes them sound kinda boring. I'm just glad that Collins toured with Genesis again, after this nightmare.
cushlinkes 4 years ago
Ray has the rep of being one of the most boring singers around pubs. Hes an eighties throwback!!
lovixtube 4 years ago 5
God, this really sucks. Lack of inspiration in the drum department, lounge singer vocals, unenthusiastic playing by Banks and Rutherford. It doesn't sound.
Squonk337 4 years ago 2
The onlything huge about Ray is his ego, he honestly thinks hes the greatest singer, not only in the world now, but of all time. Arrogant as hell, surprising for somebody with such limited and dated talent, still you'd have to be a mute not to get a fan base in Germany, they all suffer from obsessive disorders when it comes to music appreciation!!
lovixtube 4 years ago 3
Totally boring voice, nothing there. Germans love him because they think hes huge everywhere else....HALLO!!

Must admit as a Genesis fan loving all the older stuuf, Calling All Stations has really grown on me - an excellent album with some brill. Banks/Rutherford songs - but it just doesn't feel like Genesis wihout Phil or Peter.

Where is Chester Thompson ? Drumming sucks ...
pahlavanone 4 years ago 3
Chester asked Tony and Mike about becoming a full member of the band but they declined but they wanted both Chester and Daryl, but Daryl decided to go with Phil on his Dance Into The Light tour. So Chester did the same thing and was Phil's drummer for that tour. I think the tour would have had more acceptance if Daryl and Chester had been a part of it that way there would have been more familiarity for fans.
awesomedude1133 4 years ago
Sounds like Phil's band was more Genesis then this new Genesis. I think one of the reasons phil left was cause Mike and Tony would not let Chester and Daryl become full time memmbers. I think they deserve it too after all the years they put into the band.
pahlavanone 4 years ago 2
I agree. They've put in many years of good work and they sound great with the band. I saw them in Chicago on the tour last year, and they still just click together so damn well, including Chester and Daryl. They deserved the recognition of being full-time members
levetan1286 3 years ago
@pahlavanone your right that is the main reason why Phil left at the time cause Mike and Tony wouldn't let Chester or Daryl in as part of Genesis...they worked their ass off and should have been part of Genesis..
sampsont 9 months ago
The problem with Rays voice isn't that its bad or anything, it just lacks character, its kind of mono mood, and in this respect a lot of people find it boring!!Alot of eighties ballad singers suffered from this problem so this is probably why he has the unfortunate rep of being quite a dated singer, I personally feel his voice is good but low, singers that progress through the decades usually have a diverse range which allows them to write and sing different types of songs.
ginouack 4 years ago
With no Phil or Peter there is no Genesis!!! Sorry Ray lovers...........
sampsont 4 years ago 3
I must admit that Ray Wilson is a pretty good singer, but Phil simply performs this great song with more power and passion.
Mickey8402 4 years ago 3
There is not much different, but Ray's voice has a different pitch, or "feel." He's good but he's not Phil.

Ray Wilson's version of 'No Son of mine' is darker than Phil's version.
I like it! :)

Genesis with Ray definitivly was strange. Nevertheless "Calling all Stations" was one of their best albums, I love listening to it though I am a huge Phil-Fan. the problem just was that everyone exspected a Peter/Phil-Singer which in my oppinion never gave him a fair chance or a change to the group.
henningwilhelmi 4 years ago
OMG. That was Great. If you listen to this version turned up on loud speakers, it sounds amazing!
Some of the phil songs chosen for Ray to sing was very wrong. This song definitely wasn't!

Ray's Fantastic on this song. Ray has put an extremely dark edge to this song. He's got a look of insanity about him.
I like some of Phil's stuff, but I admit it, on this song, Ray is way better than Phil!
What a big mistake by Genesis to let this man go!

LahorePakiDude 4 years ago
Theres no doubt that he can sing very well but the fact that he has a humorless personality doesnt help him at all, quick note to ray smile you miserable tw@t, thats why he failed because he's about as charismatic as a boiled chip! sorry but thats the truth.
themensclub1 4 years ago 2
It seems they picked him b/c his voice is similar to Peter's.
rafalweb 4 years ago
I agree for the most part, but I think his voice alright for songs like this and Home By The Sea. He could have done better with his voice on these songs but I think nervousness played a big factor in his performance on this tour. Having so many big expectations on him and having to fill Phil Collin's shoes would be difficult for even the best singer.

Amen too. No one gave it a chance. I liked it.
rafalweb 4 years ago
I totally agree with your post. If only Ray, Mike & Tony had been given time to develop and bond together.
Phil is different, Peter is different and Ray is Different. They should not be compared. With Ray it was going to be NEW GENESIS. That's why the Genesis fans didn't give it a chance. Now Genesis is back to the same old formate.
fancies 4 years ago
It still has Tony and Mike in so it's still Genesis. And although i agree with what you're saying, people think of Genesis without Phil in the same way Queen fans think of Queen without Freddie Mercury. The band carried on after he died, but now they're recording a new album with Paul Rodgers, and it might not be accepted either. At least Phil had the ability to rejoin Genesis though.

Mike + The Mechanics, part II.
felsner1 4 years ago
No, the Mechanics were better than this. I heard somewhere that they were considering Paul Carrick as a replacement for Phil. It still wouldn't hold the magic the band had with Phil, but it probably would be a lot better than this crap.

ray wilson is *the* musician who's keeping the genesis memory and spirit alive for the younger generations. ever notice that he plays genesis material at his live shows (some of which are on his live albums, btw)?
now Genesis has reunited as rutherford, banks and collins. hope you're happy now. don't get me wrong, i love the collins era of genesis too, but i'm not going to bash ray over what regrettably happened to the third era genesis.
stephen1340c 4 years ago
It´s a pity that this version is a tone below the original version, probably the most important reason of that "heartless" feeling, because Ray is an excellent and very expressive singer. It only happens that we are used to hear the original version, but this guy is a great singer anyway
matiasmgm 4 years ago 4
I think the whole tone of the stage is depressing. Everything is totally stripped down from previous tours. It's difficult to get excited watching this.

Peter Gabriel??? He will never be...
PaulMcCartneyFan 4 years ago
i can understand why tony and mike chosen him as lead singer of genesis, he is very similar to peter gabriel as far as vocals are concerned, calling all stations was a decent album, i beleive they thought they might get alot of the old fans back with the gabriel sound. we should leave wilson alone he had a imposible job to do but in my opinion he did a very good job, well done mate
