@TrainmasterCurt Yeah, I got one of those. I use to have three, but I broke one when I attempted to replace the LCD light, and I sold the other one. So, I have only one left now.
@HambertHM Theoretically a lot of things are possible on the DX7; however, practically, the DX7 doesn't have pizzicato string samples, and it is very difficult to emulate acoustic sounds on the DX7, aside from bells, vibraphones, and other types of tuned percussion instrument, to which FM synthesis naturally lends itself.
Anyone know where to get free patches for this now? I have a D-50 and have a got a few which I've been able to upload using sysex data transfers no problem but the last website I tried has been shut down..
I'm wondering have you tried the D-50 in the V-Synth XT? I want to get a D-50 but the one in the newer V-Synth XT with all the cards installed, instead of the original 80s keyboard.
@haikousei I haven't tried the V-Synth XT, becuase it's a cool $3,000. The D-50 card in the V-Synth must be much much better than the original as far as the sound quality goes. The originaly D-50 is hissy, and sometimes the keys don't trigger the sound accurately. Still, the D-50 over playability, keyboard feel, and looks make me long for one. For each is own. But I am sure that the V-Synth's D-50 card must sound way cleaner. I think one guy demostrates tha D-50 card on YouTube.
Okay, try this. Dump the syses from your D-50 into the PC and see if this works. Then try to load it back. If this works, check the sysex file size. Make sure that the sysex files you are trying to load from the internet are of the same size. Anyway, too much talking. Send me a private message, and then maybe we can troubleshoot it together tomorrow. Cheers.
Oh yeah, and obviously you have to make your PC sysex program send the message by pressing a Play button, something like that. Unfortunatelly, I don't know your PC program. I have this little sysex utility on my Mac Mini, and it works fine. I put the D-50 in the wait mode for one way communication (no two-way handshake) and then I press the play button on the computer, and viola! The sysex is loaded in 3-4 seconds into the D-50.
Okay, maybe then there's something wrong with the setting of your PC sysex program or the MIDI interfece settings. You must send the sysex to the MIDI out of your interface. It sounds simple, but you must make sure your PC actually sends the message through the MIDI interface's OUT port. I don't think the problem has to do with speed of transmission, because D-50 loads entire sysex much faster, than say a DX7. D-50 is a newer instrument.
Okay, try to switch your D-50 to different MIDI channels. Most sysex for the D-50 available on the internet have been recorded on channel 1. When you transfer the sysex back, the channel has to be set to the same number. You can also check the channel number from the first of or the second hex number in the sysex message, I don't remember which one it was. Anyway, it has to work, it's not a problem with your PC or with your D-50. It all should work fine.
Have you tried reading the manual? Of course it will say waiting, becuase it waits for handshake message from another D-50 unit. To transfer sysex from a PC, you must use the more primitive one way data transfer mode. WHILE HOLDING the Data Transfer button down, push the Selector Button that corresponds to "B. Load" (for bulk load). I am sorry to sound like that, but it upsets me when people don't take an effort to even read manuals anymore... What kind of chaotic days we live in?
Well, I forgot to turn off the light on this video, os it's kind of dark. I am also screwing up the Enya's piece pretty bad here. But, I put some video on YouTube. Better than not putting out anything, no?
Agree with you. I wish Roland reissued the D-50, not on the card for V-Synth like they did, but to reissue it exacly as it was originally. Because I not only like the way this instrument sounds, but also the keyboard feel is great, and it looks fantastic, too. To my taste at least, as I grew up in the 80's.
Now that you mentioned Running Man, I looked it up, and indeed, there is this movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I don't recall ever seing it. I must rent it now. I think the movie is from 1987, the same year the D-50 was introduced. Chances are that the D-50 might be used on the movie soundtrack then. So, after all maybe you were closer than you though about the D-50 and the Running Man. Anyway, thanks for looking at my video. Honestly, I didn't think anybody would watch that. Thanks!
Yeah, my intention was the Terminator. Now I get it. I didn't understand what that guy meant by Running Man. I guess it's maybe a movie that he thought the music was from, maybe, I don't know.
Ah! I can use this video to learn how to play Orinoco Flow's Pizzagogo part on my keyboard that spazzes when you hit too many keys at once!
Thanks for the shooting angle. :)

D50 is a beautiful instrument. Swapped mine for Korg Z1, and while the Z1 is also a fine instrument, I miss the breathy beauty of the D50.
