It is an appropriate video. Operating a forklift is not a silly pastime. It demands a certain amount of understanding of basic physics. Symmetrical and asymmetrical loads and the limitations of you machine. It's agility belies it's inherent instability in certain situations. It must be understood and be a part of training. Wear your seat belt, and always remember when carrying raised loads to turn softly and quietly. It will save you job and better, save your hide. Don't be stupid!

I remember when I was 16, I was riding on the side of a forklift at work and almost got crushed between a wall and the roll cage due. I told the driver to stop. He thought he was being funny and didn't stop but he also didn't realize what was about to happen. I punched him and he stopped.
It still makes my stomach sink to this day. Young, stupid and untrained as to the dangers that can come from equipment and careless operators who do not respect what they are doing or the safety of others.

Complacency,incompetence and negligence and downright disregard for safe working practices caused all of these incidents. they are NOT accidents! Accident implies no one is to blame,when in fact if you look at all these clips it is the Asshole forklift driver that is the root cause of the destruction.the onus falls on the forklift driver and and the forklift driver alone.

This is why truck drivers should never be on a loading dock. When I drove a truck and these fools wanted me to help with unloading I use to get mad. I did not belong on any docks. These forklift drivers almost ran me over a few times. Some are in too much of a hurry and don't pay attention. I would have sued the warehouse and owned their ass if I was hurt. Think about it warehouse managers and owners.

@SilverFox466 Unless you are going to small mom and pop shops 99% of all companies have a area for driver's to hang out that is usually WAY out of the way. If you were in the way and almost got hit then it's your fault. I dunno the circumstances so, but at my company truck driver's will WALK INTO their trucks to look at something while we load them, shit happens sometimes you don't see them. We've kicked a few driver's out of the building for doing stupid shit before (like standing our way).
@darksniper1982 I wish more companies were like yours. I use to work for FFE and they do LTL and require the drivers to unload the truck, so I had to be on the dock. I did not belong on the dock. Weahter it was my fault or not, I don't know. The only thing I do know, is I did not belong there.
@SilverFox466 Yah we load LTL's also, container's, and full truck load's.. We have several rules for driver's, they are to choke the wheel's (we check before we enter the truck), they have to have their truck off, and they have to be INSIDE the facility sitting in our picnic table area (way away from any fork lift operators). The guy that backs out of the trailer and off the dock is an idiot, i did that for years on a sometimes wet dock and never had any issue avoiding the edge. pay attention and remember where you are. None of these things were accidents. An accident indicates something where nobody had control over what happened, but pretty much all of this was preventable if the operator had used his MHE in a responsible way. These are incidents, not accidents and they need to be treated as such. Calling it an accident is letting the operator lose some of the responsibility of doing something incredibly stupid. Forklifts kill and maim daily in North America and the vast majority is due to improper handling.
Accidents happen - you cant be 100% safe and secure at all times. Pressure to keep moving and work fast is always present at these types of jobs - and trust me, 99% of the guys you'll work with on freight docks are dumbasses. Shit happens, try not to worry about it - take precautions when you can, always wear your seatbelt, and always be aware of things like the dock plate, empty dock doors, etc.
Biggest thing you can do to keep safe during tipover: NEVER JUMP OUT. HANG THE FUCK ON+LEAN AWAY.
@Epidemechanical I disagree, if you can work safe once then you can be safe 100% of the time. workload is no excuse for being unsafe. workload does not stop you from working within the weight limits of your truck, workload does not stop you from checking the wheel chocks or the dock clamp, workload does not make you stop looking over your shoulder while backing up. workload does not make you drive forward with a load that blocks your view, if your fellow workers are unsafe report them....etc
@Epidemechanical if you have those issues then you need to address those, not use the "we are to busy" excuse or "you should try our dock". not enough people, hire more. unsafe workers, kick them out the door. Equipment breaking down, fire your damn mechanic or replace crap that's to old. Cant afford any of this?, then your an industrial accident waiting to happen and you need to seriously sit down and see what you're doing.
@Epidemechanical last remark, replacing faulty equipment, enforcing safety rules, training people on the job properly is still waaaay cheaper than paying up if an employee dies or gets seriously and permanently injured and you have a lawsuit on your ass.

Whoever said that most of those accidents were the Truck Drivers fault is an idiot. The forklift operator is always supposed to inspect a trailer before entering. That includes dock locks, chalking the tires, and insuring that the Truck Driver is not in the cab of the truck while loading or unloading. You may be the next victim of your own stupidity.

i was on a reach lift working for hubble lighting in cowpens sc. a guy hit the other side of the isle i was picking off of with his forks up. it knoked the row, and my lift over. the lanyard was of no help. i spent 2 months in the hospital because some jack ass didnt know how to do his job. i myseld have had a few accident, but mostly with screwy pallets, or dealing with some temps poor abilty to put a pallet up correctly. If the warehouses would pay more they would have better workers.

this video touched me... my entire family was killed in forklift accidents... its just me now living on the streets and i work a a forklift driving factory filled with jumps turns and high drop offs so yeah its risky for me but i gotta do it so i can put diapers on my 13 kids who live on the streets with me and they all sleep in a shopping cart together at once... and i would tell all my friends about this video but they all died in forklift accidents too...

Complacency,incompetence and negligence and downright disregard for safe working practices caused all of these incidents. they are NOT accidents! Accident implies no one is to blame,when in fact if you look at all these clips it is the Asshole forklift driver that is the root cause of the destruction.the onus falls on the forklift driver and and the forklift driver alone.

This is why truck drivers should never be on a loading dock. When I drove a truck and these fools wanted me to help with unloading I use to get mad. I did not belong on any docks. These forklift drivers almost ran me over a few times. Some are in too much of a hurry and don't pay attention. I would have sued the warehouse and owned their ass if I was hurt. Think about it warehouse managers and owners.

@SilverFox466 Unless you are going to small mom and pop shops 99% of all companies have a area for driver's to hang out that is usually WAY out of the way. If you were in the way and almost got hit then it's your fault. I dunno the circumstances so, but at my company truck driver's will WALK INTO their trucks to look at something while we load them, shit happens sometimes you don't see them. We've kicked a few driver's out of the building for doing stupid shit before (like standing our way).

@darksniper1982 I wish more companies were like yours. I use to work for FFE and they do LTL and require the drivers to unload the truck, so I had to be on the dock. I did not belong on the dock. Weahter it was my fault or not, I don't know. The only thing I do know, is I did not belong there.

We have several rules for driver's, they are to choke the wheel's (we check before we enter the truck), they have to have their truck off, and they have to be INSIDE the facility sitting in our picnic table area (way away from any fork lift operators). We are a very safety oriented company.

The guy that backs out of the trailer and off the dock is an idiot, i did that for years on a sometimes wet dock and never had any issue avoiding the edge. pay attention and remember where you are. Why do so many ppl drive with their booms raised through doorways?. Inbreeding, thats why. And the guy on the pallet jack is a retard and got what he deserved.

None of these things were accidents. An accident indicates something where nobody had control over what happened, but pretty much all of this was preventable if the operator had used his MHE in a responsible way. These are incidents, not accidents and they need to be treated as such. Calling it an accident is letting the operator lose some of the responsibility of doing something incredibly stupid. Forklifts kill and maim daily in North America and the vast majority is due to improper handling.

Accidents happen - you cant be 100% safe and secure at all times. Pressure to keep moving and work fast is always present at these types of jobs - and trust me, 99% of the guys you'll work with on freight docks are dumbasses. Shit happens, try not to worry about it - take precautions when you can, always wear your seatbelt, and always be aware of things like the dock plate, empty dock doors, etc.
Biggest thing you can do to keep safe during tipover: NEVER JUMP OUT. HANG THE FUCK ON+LEAN AWAY.

@Epidemechanical I disagree, if you can work safe once then you can be safe 100% of the time. workload is no excuse for being unsafe. workload does not stop you from working within the weight limits of your truck, workload does not stop you from checking the wheel chocks or the dock clamp, workload does not make you stop looking over your shoulder while backing up. workload does not make you drive forward with a load that blocks your view, if your fellow workers are unsafe report them....etc

@Epidemechanical if you have those issues then you need to address those, not use the "we are to busy" excuse or "you should try our dock". not enough people, hire more. unsafe workers, kick them out the door. Equipment breaking down, fire your damn mechanic or replace crap that's to old. Cant afford any of this?, then your an industrial accident waiting to happen and you need to seriously sit down and see what you're doing.

Whoever said that most of those accidents were the Truck Drivers fault is an idiot. The forklift operator is always supposed to inspect a trailer before entering. That includes dock locks, chalking the tires, and insuring that the Truck Driver is not in the cab of the truck while loading or unloading. You may be the next victim of your own stupidity.

3:20 could have been avoided easilly, one of the main reasons that happens is people need to slow down going into trailers, when they bounce across the floor it weakens the trailers over time till they give way

i was on a reach lift working for hubble lighting in cowpens sc. a guy hit the other side of the isle i was picking off of with his forks up. it knoked the row, and my lift over. the lanyard was of no help. i spent 2 months in the hospital because some jack ass didnt know how to do his job. i myseld have had a few accident, but mostly with screwy pallets, or dealing with some temps poor abilty to put a pallet up correctly. If the warehouses would pay more they would have better workers.
