  • my physics teacher was an engineer on these things. freakin awesome plane/helicopter thing-a-mo-bob

  • It's IF they will crash, but WHEN!

  • That would be YOU'RE an idiot.

  • That craft is so unsafe

  • Horrible machine, truly a failure of engineering.

  • @Zukhov1945 this is an engineering wonder ;)

  • @Zukhov1945 i would like to see you do better

  • V-22 Osprey, twice the ROFL for the Coptor

  • From Airforcetimes website: crash investigation of Osprey in Qalat Afghan. April 2010 revealed engine failure. Military wanted chief investigator to change his report to "pilot error". "The stresses of flying in the dirt and dust of Afghanistan probably caused the engine problems" BGen. Harvel, chief investigator said. He was not allowed to brief the families of the 4 KIA onboard. Maybe Airforce wants to coverup the reliability problems of this overpriced $67M helo?

  • @AccordGTR well thats probably party due to inflation. Modern aircraft are always more expensive because they are becoming increasingly complex. the v-22 is still new give it time to work out all the bugs. The reason why the osprey is better is because its faster, longer range, and can carry more soldiers/equipment

  • looks great. in fact this is one of the really sexy design concepts in aviation... and it ends there.

  • 14 Marines from my company died in one of these in 2000. They should be grounded and never flown again!!

  • @afireinside44203, your an idiot. that's called trial and error, essential to engineering, this isn't playland where everything happens perfect the 1st time,by your logic, humans should be grounded and never tried again

  • @necessaryevil101 thumbs up!

  • @afireinside44203 that crash was also pilot error. but lets go by your logic for time being - you made a mistake so lets shut you off from the internet and never let you post again.

  • @afireinside44203 Your wrong, ive been in one mid-flight. ive seen them land and take off, transition to prop plane and back. they are stable aircraft. i mourn the marines that lost their life to the osprey, but without them, like necesicary evil said, we couldnt advance. did we ground the shuttle because of the explorer incedent? no. did we ground the blackhawk because of its crashes in the early phases? the huey? the cobra? the comanche? the apache? your friends were heroes. dont forget that.

  • @skynat247 You are matching apples against oranges!!! EVERY accident that you mentioned was an accident - something that is fixable - went wrong. With the Osprey - it is one thing after the next - and several people die when this piece of junk crashes!!!!! It is no longer necessary - but I think they have sunk so many Billions into the Osprey project - they cannot back out now - so we are stuck with the V-22 "Widow Maker"!!!!!!!!

  • @thomaspruzina But they are cool.

  • @thomaspruzina "check the internet"

    Oh my God.

  • Thats more or less the distinct advantage of tilt rotor: faster, more manourable than helis, but can hover unlike jets AND can have bigger payloads as the rotars are situated at the tips of the wings instead of above the body. The downside is youre gonna need a real big flat area to land this piece of crap

  • @weirdcitykid : The Osprey is faster then a Chinook and got a bigger range of action. Ejecting you cant do from an Osprey. Have you ever seen an Eject from a C130 for example? ;)

    watch?v=5uzpDy3n3Vs <- C130 ;)

  • this thing would make a good gunship as well

  • serious question - how does a pilot eject from this if need be?

  • @weirdcitykid im guessing you don't, same thing as a helicopter you just gotta go along for the ride. but thats my guess.

  • @weirdcitykid well, he can just walk out the door that is right next 2 him ....

  • @weirdcitykid you dont eject from a passenger helicoptor.

  • @weirdcitykid the v-22 doesn't have an ejections system, some aircraft such as the b-52 do have ejection seats that go through the floor, but I do not believe this aircraft has that system.

  • @weirdcitykid they don't eject

  • What was wrong with the chinook anyway? This can't do anything the Chinook couldn't do - only far less stable.

  • @weirdcitykid

The point of the Osprey was to function as a combination of both a plane and a helicopter. That means large cargo space, and flying at much higher speeds than helicopters, and then sweep back the propellers when landing or taking off, like a VTOL. It's basically a VTOL cargo plane.

  • not all aircrafts are perfect and it takes time improving them.

the v22 osprey had a hard time, but I think it was worth the struggle. Having an aircraft flying 6 times as long, carrying twice as much, at 3 times the speed and still being capable to land vertical as an helicopter.

Also i want one for Christmas! :)

  • terrible design.

  • @weirdcitykid disign one better.

  • @doomsday1945

I could design a more convincing flying machine using cereal packets and a papercip!! This looks like drunken crane fly. Terrible thing you won't catch me in it...damned thing looks like it's going to crash and it's only about 8 foot from the floor.

They need to put the second propeller underneath - jesus H mother of God that thing looks daft! Please hide it from the Russians they may laugh at us!

  • Man..this thing looks so unstable to fly that it will just take one crew member to fart to tilt the aircraft to his direction.....

  • blackhatch46 I was talking about USMC choppers not Russia.

  • change the rotors to VTOL jet engine to save space for landings..

  • They tried and failed it crashed on descent so they changed it to turbo props

  • @helmetBETTY

it would use too much fuel and chew up the flight deck.

  • um..nothing thing can carry more and go much faster then the 53.

  • @Dogmeat1950 ha ha you are an idiot! the osprey goes 320 knots, thats more than twice as fast as the 53s 150 knots. also have you heard of the mi-26? it has a gross takeoff weight of aroung 123,000 pounds. thats alot more than the 53s 68,000.

  • Wouldn't it have been possible to add a turboreactor between the blades on the top of the aircraft, for cruise?

  • I imagine you have to be so skilled to fly one of those its insane.

  • I sort of agree. They didn't mess up by buying it though. I will be flying in about 10 years and I wish I could have flown the 53, great aircraft.

  • Do you mean the CH-53 if so tell us the nickname and how it got it .

  • Do you know what the 53's are nicknamed? It's for a very good reason.

  • watch?v=6SrUyNG4fYA yeah that's right i really looks like the osprey but at this time they werent trying to build a vtol airplane they just wanted to build a helicopter, because of his long arms he was called 'dragon'...

  • Hey guys, although it may not be as fast, check out this fully operational combat vtol from 1940 that looks very similar to the Osprey and performs the same roles. 68 years later and not a lot of change. I'm talking about the second craft shown on the following vid, not the first one.

    watch?v=6SrUyNG4fYA

Who thinks the visual similarity is striking?

  • A good similarity...however was that a tilting rotor aircraft?...it was a helicopter with 2 rotors...Am I right or not?

  • it looks similar yes

    but so very different too

plus they did so much crap back then

they made planes that looked like CD'S and shit like that so actually its not that much of a surprise :P

  • other than for showingg skill, whats the main purpose of a touch and go? i jsut wanna no

  • normally it is so that in an emergency you know that you can pull off really quickly and secondly it makes sure you plane can take the stress

  • "a" not "are"

Secondly, you'd not say that if France built it... so keep your mouth shut. ;)

Thirdly, this is basically a new design for helicopters, so of course it's going to have glitches in it at first. If we stick with it, in 5-10 years, it'll be a great platform.

The first manned flight (by Wright brothers) wasn't something to write home about either, compared to aircraft built just 30 years later.

There always has to be a beginning! And this is it!

  • I think this aircraft is really cool, but Ive read all the reports about its flaws, and deaths resulting from them in training flights etc. Does anyone know what AF pilots, etc think about this craft?

  • The V-22 is an awsome step in a great direction for aviation, don't be dissin' my favorite aircraft now
