That clicking noise is your timing chain and your exaust is getting red because a wire is grounding out, it doesn't sound right but I had the same problem.
Main my "Z" was doing this and i installed 2 new Hot Cams and Timing chain and adjuster then my drive chain jumped and slammed into the size of my cases and busted them.my Z is built for MX racing and the Chain was a D.I.D 520 ERV3 X-RING CHAIN.LOl figures hahaha
I had the exact same problem on my 03 Z400, I purchased a "manual cam chain tensioner" and installed it. $41.95. 25 minuites. 2 beers, done, and the engine sounds beautiful. Sounds like a brand new quad... Best money ever spent... It is only the cam chain slapping the top of your guide because your ACCT is at its max. MCCT is the way to go.
@DAGSTERZ26 so all you did was change the ACCT to a MCCT ??? and kept the same cam chain... ohh ya and hey, the MCCT must extend out longer into the motor then the ACCT
@yacanstopme Yes sir, EXACTLY... After I installed the MCCT I felt so bad that I did not make a video of the before and after. I was not expecting the sound to go away 100%. But when I adjusted the the MCCT finger tight to the the cam chain, and torqued it, I was like. "its now or never" I cranked the engine, started it, and it sounded amazing....I was very impressed. I got the Thumpertalk MCCT.
@pizzaisgood14....i own a z400 and am in the process of changing the timing chain and rings and this is the exact sound the z400 makes before it jumps time and throws the piston threw the valves. the only reason i know this is because i have had two z's and the same thing happend to both. get on it before it jumps you will have save a ton of money wait too long and it will bend the valves and cams. z400s are very famous for it
its funny all these honda guys are gettin there pussies all wet when its just a simple problem. just remember while the new z400s are faster and have fuel injection. the 400ex is still using a 20 year old engine design and they are still liquid cooled
@ltz250boy93, LOL, a 400ex is the most reliable in the 400 class of any out there. fuel injected or not. and there air cooled. you know why there still using the same engines as when they first started making them? because there bulletproof, theres no need to change them, while suzukis always changing there P.O.S motor.
i tell you i got the same motor man... its your cam chain.. its normal... them are a noisey motor from stock anyways... i was worried too... it just your chain started to wear out...
what i would doo.. is first take out ur center bolt out of ur cam chain tensioner witch removes the spring.. then after that take out the two side bolts and take it out.. and see if is to its max or if u can pull it out farther... if its at its max i say u get a new chain....
yea i wouldnt ride it anymore till you got it fixed, sorry :( but hey, at least you have a bike! it sounds like piston slap or bad valve adjustment. ask for a piston, rings, valve adjustment, and maybe a timing chain and it should be really cheap, plus if you dont your engine is likely to grenade.
dude u r lucky cuz it starts n u can ride it i m not sure if u r bike is at risk or not for how much time do u have it?i think u just need vavle adjustment and cam and chain tightenning u can get new HOTCAMS for $250 it will make it faster n better or just take it to the dealer n tell them to tell u what the problem is n theyll tell u the problem and the cost if its affordable for u then fix it
I have a knock in my engine but i really think you may have a bad bearing in your crank. Valves and timing chain i believe is more of a slapping or ticking noise but this is definetely a knock. My engine doesn't sound this bad at all.
oh cuase the one i saw said yes its fast no u cant ride it and the other plate said this machine may cuase a serious erection..
Did u fiqure out whats wrong with it most of the z400 i come around seem to make that noise i guess itsa suzuki thing my old lt230 made that noise too and it was all rebuilt
sounds like either your valves are out of adjustment or you need a new cam chain. I just got finished installing a new cam chain on my Z and it was actually really easy and it purrs like a kitten now
dam im glad you didnt ride it like that with that bad cam chain it would have blew it up

sounds like cam chain tensioner to me
it is not hard to replace but you need to do it soon because the timing chain can jump and bend the valves
If that is the problem that is

About how many hours are on it? It sounds like the cam chain, but it could be some piston slap too? While your at it you should adjust your vavles.
